In the research area of automatic web information extraction, there is a need for permanent and annotated web page collections enabling objective performance evaluation of different algorithms. Currently, researchers are suffering from the absence of such representative and contemporary test collections, especially on web tables. At the same time, creating your own sharable web page collections is not trivial nowadays because of the dynamic and diverse nature of modern web technologies employed to create often short- lived online content. In this paper, we cover the problem of creating static representations of web pages in order to build sharable ground truth test sets. We explain the principal difficulties of the problem, discuss possible approaches and introduce our solution: WebPageDump, a Firefox extension capable of saving web pages exactly as they are rendered online. Finally, we benchmark our system with current alternatives using an innovative automatic method based on image snapshots. With the current web lacking semantic annotation, researchers are working on automatic information extraction systems that allow transforming heterogonous and semi-structured information into structured databases that can be later queried for data analysis. For testing purposes researchers need representative and annotated ground truth test data sets in order to benchmark different extraction algorithms against each other. -

Science,Helmreich Technology, / Flexible Infections& Human Values Flexible Infections: Computer Viruses, Human Bodies, Nation-States, Evolutionary Capitalism Stefan Helmreich New York University This article analyzes computer security rhetoric, particularly in the United States, argu- ing that dominant cultural understandings of immunology, sexuality, legality, citizen- ship, and capitalism powerfully shape the way computer viruses are construed and com- bated. Drawing on popular and technical handbooks, articles, and Web sites, as well as on e-mail interviews with security professionals, the author explores how discussions of computer viruses lean on analogies from immunology and in the process often encode popular anxieties about AIDS. Computer security rhetoric about compromised networks also uses language reminiscent of that used to describe the “bodies” of nation-states under military threat from without and within. Such language portrays viruses using images of foreignness, illegality, and otherness. The security response to viruses advo- cates the virtues of the flexible and adaptive response—a rhetoric that depends on evolu- tionary language but also on the ideological idiom of advanced capitalism. As networked computing becomes increasingly essential to the operations of corporations, banks, government, the military, and academia, worries about computer security and about computer viruses are intensifying among the people who manage and use these networks. The end of the 1990s saw the emergence of a small industry dedicated to antivirus protection software, and one can now find on the World Wide Web a great deal of information about how viruses work, how they can be combated, and how computer users might keep up with ever-changing inventories and taxonomies of the latest viruses. -

Along with increased mobility come requests for ad-hoc exchange of resources between computing devices as an extension of humans interacting. We termed it casual resource sharing where resources in this thesis have been narrowed down to files only. We have named our casual resource sharing model for shared virtual folders (SVF). SVFs can be looked upon as a common repository much in the same way as the tuplespace model. The SVF members perceive the repository similarly to a common file directory on a server, while in reality all participating devices stores their own contribution of files. All types of files could be added to the repository and shared. To become a SVF member one needs to be invited by another member or initiate a SVF oneself. All members are free to withdraw their SVF membership whenever they wish. They are also free to log on to the SVF and log out as they please. The SVF cease to exist when the last member has drawn his membership. The SVF implements a simple versioning detection system to alert members when a file has been modified by another member. Feasibility of the model is demonstrated in a prototype implementation based on Java and the JXTA middleware, a peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructure middleware supporting the Internet protocol.
