In his first drypoints, Dine brought a fresh and imaginative attitude to printmaking, directly relating this work to his "happenings" and construc tion/canvases. He was one of the first to return to the oKJ art of hand-coloring prints, thereby producing a body of work of infinite variety. His most recent work has an expressive, tor tured character that expands and may reorient ideas regarding Dine's art and that of his generation. From reading Jean-Paul Dubois’s novel, Si ce livre pouvait me INTERVIEW rapprocher de toi. It’s a great book, one of his best. I had read it a long time ago, and even though I didn’t know what film to make of it, it meant something WITH special to me and I couldn’t put the book away on the shelf. After WELCOME and ALL OUR DESIRES, I wanted a sunny film and a starting point which is not in the book, but which the book inspired, came to mind: a man discovers he’s got two brothers he didn’t know about PHILIPPE and wants to meet them. -

FILM The NFB hit its stride during the late 1950s and 1960s, producing important and stylistically revolutionary documentaries, shorts, animation and feature films Animator Norman McLaren led the way with the Oscar-winning Neighbours, and his proteges, Colin Low, Wolf Koenig, Roman BOARD Kroitor and others, combined to produce innovative and award-winning documentaries like City of Gold, Corral and Universe for Tom Daly's Unit B. The new headquarters provided a focal point for a new generation of talented quebecois filmmakers—Pierre Perrault, Michel Brault, Gilles Groulx, Bernard Gosselin, Claude Jutra, Denys OF Arcand—who created many of their early works , in the cinema verite style. On one level, textual fidelity seems less important than fiduciary responsibility. To explain by way of a reductive distinction between opening and closing film credits: In the Hol- lywood production model, opening credits signify “above-the-line,” marquee investments aimed at ensuring a profitable return at the box office. A star’s name, a director’s track record, even the acknowledgement of a prior liter- ary pedigree: all participate in the branding of a film’s relative credentials for success—as, for example, a familiar genre vehicle, a sure-fire hit or a “qual- ity” picture. Closing credits, by contrast, mostly reflect “below-the-line,” out- of-pocket expenses, the cost of building sets and props, designing costumes, renting equipment and locations, generating technical effects, feeding and watering cast and crew (see Glatzer). In Canada we haven’t quite figured out how to make this accounting system work, although not for lack of trying. Which is why in the debit column at the end of most Canadian films made since 1995 one sees routine acknowledgement paid to the following confi- dence broker: the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit program (CPTC). -
