Alternative names of a maritime feature: The case of the Caribbean Sea POKOLY Béla* 1) The Caribbean Sea has been known by this name in the English language for several centuries. It is the widely accepted name in international contacts, and is so recorded by the International Hydrographic Organization. Still in some languages it is alternatively referred to as the Sea of the Antilles, especially in French. It may reflect the age of explorations, when the feature had various names. In Hungarian cartography it is one of the few marine features shown by giving the alter- native name in brackets: Karib (Antilla)‐ tenger (English Caribbean Sea /Sea of the Antilles/). 1. Introduction A look at any map or encyclopaedia would confirm that the Caribbean Sea is one of the major bodies of water of the world. With an approximate area of 2,750,000 km² (1,050,000 square miles), only the five oceans and the Mediterranean Sea are larger by surface. The sea is deepest at the Cayman Trough (or Cayman Trench) which has a maximum depth of 7,686 metres, where the North American and Caribbean plates create a complex zone of spreading and transform faults. The area witnessed two major seismic catastrophes in the past centuries: the 1692 Jamaica earthquake, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Douglas Price, Vera Tiesler, Pilar Zabala, Alfredo Coppa, Carolyn Freiwald, Hannes Schroeder, and Andrea Cucina This study focuses on the origins and diet of the seafarers on Columbus’s second voyage, individuals whose mortal remains were buried in the churchyard of the settlement of La Isabela. This was the very first European town in the Americas, founded by Columbus in the present-day Dominican Republic in early January 1494. Historical sources indicate that most of the crew came from the region of Andalucía, while the remainder came from a range of other geographical locations. It is also likely that some individuals had been born elsewhere and migrated to Spain before embarking on their transatlantic voyage. However, their precise origins remain unknown. -

The History of the Pledge of Allegiance Many Americans looked forward to October 11, 1892 (Columbus Day). That date marked the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America. Events were planned for years in advance. Americans were looking forward to the beginning of a new century. The United States had recovered from most of the effects of its Civil War that began 30 years earlier, and people from around the world were flocking to the "Land of Opportunity." The previous year almost a half million immigrants had entered the United States through the Barge Office in Battery Park, New York and on New Years day of 1892 the new Federal Bureau of Receiving's station at Ellis Island had opened. The largest World’s Fair in history was scheduled to open in Chicago in 1893. Two men interested in both education and planned Columbus Day celebrations were Francis Bellamy and James Upham. To this day it is still unknown which of the two men actually authored the words that were to become the Pledge of Allegiance. It was published anonymously and not copyrighted. James Upham was an employee of the Boston publishing firm that produced "The Youth's Companion" in which it first appeared. Francis Bellamy was an educator who served as chairman of the National committee of educators and civic leaders who were planning the Columbus Day activities. What we do know for certain is that the words first appeared in the September 8, 1892 issue of "The Youth's Companion", and a month later more than 12 million school children recited the words for the first time in schools across the nation. -

SPONSORED BY THE WASHINGTON COLUMBUS CELEBRATION ASSOCIATION IN COORDINATION WITH THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CELEBRATING CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL The Site In the years following the great quadricentennial (400th anniversary) celebration in 1892 of the achievements and discoveries of Christopher Cohnnbus, an effort was launched by the Knights of ~ Columbus to establish a monument to the ~ great discoverer. The U. S. Congress passed a law which mandated a Colwnbus Memorial in the nation's capital and appropriated $100,000 to cover the ~· ~, ·~-~=:;-;~~ construction costs. A commission was T" established composed of the secretaries of State and War, the chairmen of the House and Senate Committees on the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus. With the newly completed Union Railroad Station in 1907, plans focused toward locating the memorial on the plaz.a in front of this great edifice. After a series of competitions, sculptor Lorado Z. Taft of Chicago was awarded the contract. His plan envisioned what you see this day, a monument constructed of Georgia marble; a semi-circular fountain sixty-six feet broad and forty-four feet deep and in the center, a pylon crowned with a globe supported by four eagles oonnected by garland. A fifteen foot statue of Columbus, facing the U. S. Capitol and wrapped in!\ medieval mantle, stands in front of the pylon in the bow of a ship with its pn,, extending into the upper basin of the fountain terminating with a winged figurehead representing democracy. -

ABSTRACT From 1492, when the first European invaders set foot on the island known today as Hispaniola, until 1965, the year of the April Revolution, the multi-faceted repercussions of invasion have been a prevalent theme within the Dominican Republic’s literature. This thesis examines how the country has amalgamated a roller-coaster past to reflect this in its writing. It starts by evaluating the Spanish invaders’ extermination of the Tainos, its generational influence and the continued impact of Trujillo’s legacy, highlighting the issue of gender within the Resistance movement.
