Box 51, Wanneroo, WA, 6946, Australia. * Corresponding author [email protected] ABSTRACT Ten mammal species of conservation priority have been lost from Dirk Hartog Island, off the coast of Western Australia, most likely due to predation by the feral cat. We examined the diet of fourteen feral cats from Dirk Hartog Island to understand the potential impact of cat predation on remaining extant species. We examined the contents of the stomach and large intestine, and used stable isotope analysis of faeces, liver and muscle. The vertebrate species identified in the digestive tracts included at least six bird species, including two terrestrial birds and four shorebirds, seven reptile species, and one mammal (introduced Mus musculus). Analysis of δ13C and δ15N determined that the diet of feral cats was primarily terrestrially derived, although samples from the northern area of Dirk Hartog Island showed a skew towards marine derived food sources. The research findings showed that on this island, in the absence of rabbits, cats preyed mainly on terrestrial birds and reptiles. KEYWORDS: Feral cat, diet, Dirk Hartog Island, stomach content and faecal analysis, stable isotopes INTRODUCTION is present on Dirk Hartog Island and, depending upon abundance, could contribute significantly to the feral Feral cats (Felis catus) are found on most major island cats’ diet. -

If you have queries or comments, please contact Grahame at: [email protected] ----------- Tasman, Abel Janszoon c1603 - c1659 Commander, explorer, cartographer, merchant Born to subsistence farmers in Lutjegast the year the Dutch Republic was formed, Tasman may well have benefitted from its progressive education program. His ability to write, his knowledge of Latin, his rapid rise in rank, and the willingness of able officers to sail with him all bear witness to the quality of his education and to his command, seamanship, and navigation skills. He married his second wife Jannetje Tjaerts in Amsterdam in 1632, sailed for Batavia in 1633, and renewed his contract with the Dutch East India Company while back in the Republic in 1636. Tasman’s most well-known expedition of 1642-1643 was just one of twelve long voyages of which he was given command during his service with the Company. He began work with the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), in 1634 by spending two years at sea patrolling the Moluccas as skipper of the Mocha. Though much of his time during that period involved enforcement of Company control of trade, he charted the seas between Amboyna, Banda and Ceram for the Company as he did so. -

An Assessment of Coral Reefs in Ambon, Indonesia
CORAL REEFS ASSESSMENT AN ASSESSMENT OF CORAL REEFS IN AMBON, INDONESIA By GINO VALENTINO LIMMON B. Sc., SARJANA AN ASSESSMENT OF CORAL REEFS IN AMBON, INDONESIA By GINO VALENTINO LIMMON, B. Sc. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulr.Ilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science McMASTER UNIVERSITY ©Copyright by Gino Valentino Limmon, June 1996 MASTER OF SCIENCE (1996) McMaster University (Geology) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: An Assessment of Coral Reefs in Ambon, Indonesia. AUTHOR: Gino Valentino Limmon, B. Sc. (Hasanuddin University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Michael J. Risk NUMBER OF PAGES: x, 80 ii ABSTRACT Increasing human activity and population pressure on coastal marine resources, especially coral reefs, in Ambon have caused significant stresses on coral communities requiring careful management. A suitable environmental management strategy for this complex ecosystem, however, must be based on an accurate assessment of the state of these resources, natural variability, and the impact of human activities. Consequently, baseline research is needed to describe reef areas and to provide data about environmental changes. One control site (Tanjung Setan) and three affected sites (Hila, Wayame and Wailiha) on Ambon were observed to assess the condition ofthe reefs. Coral cover, coral growth rate, species richness and environmental parameters such as suspended particulate matter (SPM), resuspended sediment, salinity, temperature, dissolved nutrients (N03 and P04), <5 1 ~, and water clarity were measured to assess reef condition and to determine the possible causes of reefdegradation. Average coral cover in the control site (Tanjung Setan) is higher (64%) than that in affected sites: Hila (27%), Wayame (36%) and Wailiha (11%). -
Thylacinidae
FAUNA of AUSTRALIA 20. THYLACINIDAE JOAN M. DIXON 1 Thylacine–Thylacinus cynocephalus [F. Knight/ANPWS] 20. THYLACINIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The single member of the family Thylacinidae, Thylacinus cynocephalus, known as the Thylacine, Tasmanian Tiger or Wolf, is a large carnivorous marsupial (Fig. 20.1). Generally sandy yellow in colour, it has 15 to 20 distinct transverse dark stripes across the back from shoulders to tail. While the large head is reminiscent of the dog and wolf, the tail is long and characteristically stiff and the legs are relatively short. Body hair is dense, short and soft, up to 15 mm in length. Body proportions are similar to those of the Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus harrisii, the Eastern Quoll, Dasyurus viverrinus and the Tiger Quoll, Dasyurus maculatus. The Thylacine is digitigrade. There are five digital pads on the forefoot and four on the hind foot. Figure 20.1 Thylacine, side view of the whole animal. (© ABRS)[D. Kirshner] The face is fox-like in young animals, wolf- or dog-like in adults. Hairs on the cheeks, above the eyes and base of the ears are whitish-brown. Facial vibrissae are relatively shorter, finer and fewer than in Tasmanian Devils and Quolls. The short ears are about 80 mm long, erect, rounded and covered with short fur. Sexual dimorphism occurs, adult males being larger on average. Jaws are long and powerful and the teeth number 46. In the vertebral column there are only two sacrals instead of the usual three and from 23 to 25 caudal vertebrae rather than 20 to 21. -
A Pilot Study for the Proposed Eradication of Feral Cats on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia

Box 51, Wanneroo, Western Australia 6946, Australia. <[email protected]>. 2Department of Sustainability and Environment, Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, P.O. Box 137, Heidelberg, Victoria 3084, Australia. Abstract Feral cat eradication is planned for Dirk Hartog Island (620 km2), which is the largest island off the Western Australian coast. The island, in the Shark Bay World Heritage Property, once supported at least 13 species of native mammals but only three species remain. Since the 1860s, Dirk Hartog Island has been managed as a pastoral lease grazed by sheep and goats. Cats were probably introduced by early pastoralists and became feral during the late 19th century. Dirk Hartog Island was established as a National Park in November 2009, which provides the opportunity to eradicate feral cats and reconstruct the native mammal fauna. A 250 km2 pilot study was conducted on the island to assess the efficacy of aerial baiting as the primary technique for the eradication campaign. Initially, cats were trapped and fitted with GPS data-logger radio-collars. The collars were to provide information on daily activity patterns, to determine detection probabilities, and to optimise the proposed spacing of aerial baiting transects and the monitoring track network for the eradication. -

My earliest childhood memories were been stung by jellyfish everytime I swam in the ocean and just how cold the Atlantic Ocean was. Whilst at the University of Cape Town, I worked as a ranger at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The reserve, now part of a larger national park was bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east which resulted in a very diverse marine environment. I had the privilege of monitoring the Black Oystercatcher population within a 7 km sanctuary zone and have fond memories of been the only person, apart from the baboons on the beach every day. In later years, I worked for a provincial conservation organisation in KwaZulu- Natal, much like DBCA and was responsible, amongst other duties, for the overall management of the many marine reserves. -
