AWARDS, BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Awards, bursaries and scholarships are available to students attending post-secondary programs throughout .

AWARDS: An award is a gift which can be a sum of money or citation which is given to a student to recognize achievement in some capacity as established by the donor.

BURSARIES: A bursary is a monetary or equivalent award granted to a student or potential student to enable that person to continue studies. It is based primarily on financial need, but achievement is also considered.

SCHOLARSHIPS: A scholarship is an award of money or equivalent granted to a student toward the expense of further study. It is based on academic achievement, but need may also be considered. Scholarship recipients are generally selected based on donor established criteria.

A list is included in this package for your perusal and also posted on the St. John’s College website (www.sjconline.ca) under Student Services. Students are encouraged to begin checking the September applications immediately.

SCHOOL NOMINATED SCHOLARSHIPS/AWARDS

The following scholarships require a student to be nominated by their home school. Prior to the deadline for each scholarship, Student Services will provide a preliminary application to be completed by interested students. A committee of staff members will review the submitted applications to determine which candidates will be nominated by St. John’s College. The successful candidates will then be required to complete and submit the appropriate application and documentation by the required deadlines. Please review the criteria and deadlines of these scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIP/AWARD CRITERIA TIMELINE Loran Award Well-rounded student who demonstrates October character, promise of leadership and strong commitment to service in the community. Student must have high academic excellence, outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership and show financial need. Western National Student must have obtained a minimum February Scholarship overall academic average of 90% on all Grade 12 U/M courses and have applied for admission for full time studies at the main campus. James Hillier Foundation Student must have obtained a minimum May Scholarship average of 90% including two science courses, be pursuing a career in the scientific or technological fields, have indicated an interest in scientific research and plan to attend college or university.
