HERMES Development of a Higher Education and Research Area Between Europe and the Middle East
HERMES Development of a Higher Education and Research Area between Europe and the Middle East The principle objective of HERMES project is to develop scientific mobility/exchanges of students at all levels and staff between the Higher Education institutions of Europe and the Higher Education institutions of the Middle East. This will lead to a “strong sustainable contribution” to the creation of a European– Mediterranean area of High- er Education and research. A total of 180 mobility is expected to be performed between the twenty universities of the HERMES consor- tium: 144 mobility from the Middle East to Europe and 36 Mobility from Europe to the Middle East. The dura- tion of the project is 4 years. The program has begun in July 2013 and it will end in June 2017. The Hermes program is funded by EU. Dr. Radwan Ziadeh Radwan Ziadeh is a Visiting Scholar at The Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES) at Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University. He was most recently a Prins Global Fellow at Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University and Visiting Scholar at The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) at Georgetown University. Before that he was Reagan–Fascell Fellow at National Endowment for Democracy (NED) at Washington D,C and Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University in New York City, he was also a Visiting Fellow at Chatham House (The Royal Institute of International Affairs) in London and a visiting scholar at Carr Center for Human Rights at Harvard University (2008–2009). In 2007–2008 he was a Senior Fellow at United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, D.C. He is the founder and director of the Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies in Syria (afiliated to the International Federation for Human Rights - FIDH) and co-founder and executive director of the Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Washington, D.C. He is the managing editor of the Transitional Justice in the Arab World Project. Before that, Ziadeh was editor-in-chief of Tyarat magazine in 2001–2002 and secretary of the Syrian Organization for Transparency. He was a researcher with the UNDP’s "Syria 2025" project and was named best political scientist researcher in the Arab world by Jordan’s Abdulhameed Shoman Foundation in 2004; in 2009 he was awarded the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Academic Freedom award in Boston; and in 2010 he was awarded the Democracy Courage Tributes award on behave of the Human Rights movement in Syria by the World Movement for Democracy at Jakarta- Indonesia. -

American Studies in Jordan and the UNC/UJ Partnership Program
On Teaching American Studies in Jordan and the UNC/UJ Partnership Program Tawfiq Yousef American studies in Jordan and in the Middle East is relatively new. The oldest programs of American studies in the region were first established in Turkey, such as the one in Baskent University, Ankara, which was established after the 1950s.The other programs in Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Bahrain, Iran, and Lebanon are more recent, and the earliest in Egypt dates back to the 1990s while the other ones all have been founded after the turn of the century. These programs differ in their nature and structure from one country to another. They vary in their levels, credit hour requirements, affiliation (the faculties or departments responsible for offering them), as well as in their status (degree-granting programs, undergraduate course-offering programs, or research centers), etc. In Jordan, American studies is offered in the University of Jordan and at the postgraduate level. This program (begun in 2000) and the program offered at Al-Quds University (established in 2002) are the only two graduate programs in the Middle East that offer MA degrees in American studies. American studies is also taught at the Hashemite University as part of their undergraduate program in English and cultural studies. In Egypt, American studies is taught in one way or another at the American University in Cairo (AUC) where the School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers, through the American Studies and Research Center, a minor in American studies in an interdisciplinary program in which students take a minimum of five courses ( 15 credits among specified 0026-3079/2006/4703/4-151S2.50/0 American Studies, 47:3/4 (Fall-Winter 2006): 151-166 151 152 TawfiqYousef offerings involving the study of the history and culture of the United States). -

JAMAL AL SHALABI & TAREQ AL-ASSAD RÉSUMÉ / ABSTRACT LA PARTICIPATION POLITIQUE DES FEMMES DE JORDANIE Cet article se propose d’étudier le rôle politique des femmes en Jordanie et d’analyser ce rôle à travers diverses problématiques juri- diques, en particulier la constitution de 1952, la Charte nationale de 1990, et les conventions internationales sur les femmes, en montrant l’impact (positivement ou négativement) des changements politiques, tels que celui mis en œuvre par la « démocratisation » qui a débuté en 1989. Bien que les femmes aient occupé des postes de « ministres », de dirigeants de partis politiques ou des fonctions dans le système judi- ciaire, à différentes époques, les problèmes et les obstacles qu’elles rencontrent ainsi que leur rôle dans la vie politique, soumis aux tra- ditions et aux contraintes des lois électorales, seront mis en évidence dans cette étude. POLITICAL PARTICIPATION OF JORDANIAN WOMEN This article aims to study the political role of women in Jordan and to analyse this role through various legal laws, especially the constitution of 1952, the National Charter of 1990, and international conventions on women by showing the impact (positively or negatively) of politi- cal changes, such as the “democratisation” that began in 1989 on this role. Although women have been assigned as ‘ministers’ and leaders of political parties and the judicial system, in different periods of time, the problems and obstacles faced by Jordanian women and their role in political life still exist, such as: traditions and electoral laws are still on the line, which needs to be highlighted in this study. The Effect of the Language of Instruction on University Participants` Acquisition of Scientific Terms
European Scientific Journal November edition vol.25 ISSN 1857- 7431 THE EFFECT OF THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION ON UNIVERSITY PARTICIPANTS` ACQUISITION OF SCIENTIFIC TERMS Mahmoud Sabri Al-Asal, PhD Jadara University, Jordan Oqlah Smadi, PhD Yarmouk University, Jordan Abstract: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the language of instruction on the participants’ acquisition of the scientific terms with respect to their knowledge, usage, proficiency, adoption and evaluation in two Arab universities. The faculty members and the students of the faculties of Engineering and Medical sciences in the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), where the medium of instruction is English , and the University of Damascus (UD), where Arabic is the medium of instruction, were the participants in the study. They were 991 students of different scientific fields at JUST, and 729 students at the UD. The students ranged from third-year level to graduate studies level. Also, 132 faculty members in different scientific fields at JUST, and 109 faculty members at the UD participated in the study. The results of the study show that there were statistically significant differences between the means of the criteria of knowledge, usage, proficiency, adoption and evaluation of the Arabicized terms due to the effect of the language of instruction (i.e., English language) in favor of JUST, and there were statistically significant differences between the means of the criteria of knowledge, usage, proficiency, adoption and evaluation of the Arabic equivalent terms due to the effect of the language of instruction (i.e., Arabic) in favor of the UD. The results of the study, also show that the percentage of the participants’ responses to the items that ask about their use of the Arabicized scientific terms in JUST is 93.3%, which is higher than that in UD which was 27.8%. -
