GRANDMA'S COMING HOME! b y Sherw i n Podolsky, Assoc iate Ed itor

On July 13, 1938 Lithuania issued a four-stamp semi-postal set for a local Olympiad held in that country from July 15—20 that year. Michel states the set honors the First Baltic Olympiad, however, Scott attributes it to the Lithuanian National Olympiad. The name of the host city is not given in either catalog.

Releases in connection with the event was a picture postcard apparently show ing a trophy. The example illustrated bears Scott B45 tied by a Kaunas double- circle bridged handcancel dated July 26, 1938 shortly after the close of the Games. The message to Mr. and Mrs. Maciones of Philadelphia reads:

PIRMOJi UETUVOSTAUTINE OLIMPIJADA Dear Folks, I Grandma is definitely coming with me. Expect to be in NY September 9. Please bring my topcoat. Make sure it's mine. Let's pray Grandma won't have to go to Ellis Island. I will wire home two days before we hit home. Right now I am in Kaunas finishing business such as ticket, money, trophy (looks bad), etc. I will go back for a few more days in Kelme and then home. Don't worry about Grandma's entry into US (It?) should be here in Lith by the time I get home.

As ever,

Lee

The card raises some interesting questions. Was Lee a contestant in the "Olympiad"? Was Lee a man or women? Could Lee have been an American citizen participating in a foreign sport event? Dividing the message and address side on the card reverse is:

"Pirmosios Lietuvos Tautines limpijados Leidinys' Can anyone translate this and also the wording on the card?

This card is rich with sentiment. Lee is shown as a person with much foresight and ability to plan especially in the gathering storm just before World War II. Lee must have been a young person in 1938- Where is he or she now?

Nadia Comaneci's photo, in multi-color, is on the face of the 40 bani postal card. Her signature and emblem with the Olympic Five Rings and "Romania" over with an illustration of the flag. The address side shows 40 bani embossed and a female gymnast (not Nadia). At bottom left in Romanian and French text tells of her achievements. On Aug. 7, 1976 in Oradea a special cancel was used at the local Stamp Collectors Association Exhibition. 400 cards were alloted for this occasion and the cancel in the upper right shows Nadia in action, the Olympic Rings, her name, 5 medals, Montreal 1976, with the date and city. The cancel is in black ink.

It is reported that there were 160,000 cards issued, but shortly after the government had withdrawn these cards from sale. No explanation was given. SPORTS PHILATELISTS INTERNATIONAL

Sports Philatelists International Cachet #2 THE PANAMIAN OLYMPIC STAMP "TRANSITION" PHASE 2 - by Joe Schirmer, Associate Editor

PROLOGUE: In 1975 when I wrote this article for the Nov.-Dec. issue of JSP, I knew my facts were not complete as I would have liked them to be, so with further research and discussions with a few of our readers, we now feel certain that we can now present a more detailed story. I would like to caution members that I am referring but to one particular issue; viz: Syncom 3 Tokyo Olympics issue~6 triangular stamps and a perf. & imperf. souvenir sheet. Some readers thought I was referring to the satellite issue for the 1968 Garres in Mexico.

There is some differences of opinion just as to what date these stamps were issued. Scott lists them as Jan. 1965 the same as Sieger, while Michel lists them as 1964. Minkus says June 1965 & Yvert also goes with 1965- So we can settle for late 1964 or early 1965-

Quantities issued also vary, but I am inclined to go along with Yvert, Sieger & Michel who say 7500.

My long time friend, the French dealer Henri Trachtenberg, goes along with Yvert facts and figures, and from his letters, he agrees with the writings of my first article on this "transition".

To help clarify this "transition"; let me say: of the 6 triangular stamps, only 1 shows the Olympic Rings this being theB/0.50 green and this stamp is also shown on the perforated souvenir sheet. But the imperforated souvenir sheet shows the same stamp and value, but this time it is red in color.

Now if you read the first article, you are aware that the 5$ green became a 50$ red stamp when they appeared in the European stamp market. Trachtenberg verifies this having seen them and having some in stock at one time. It appears now that an outfit listed as Universal Panamena S.A. purchased these stamps and one would have to assume the printing plates, or how else could they have made the European "transition"?

Discussion: if the 50

While we are not that naive and know this issue is definitely the promoters delight and while we also know the boys at SCott and the APS have black-blotted same, I find it interesting to search it out and am still struggling to the the 50(f red single for my collection along with other variations that may come to light. I have all the others, and again we ask members and/or dealers, if they can enlighten me further on this issue.. Please contact me at the address listed elsewhere in this issue of JSP. LETS POOL OUR OLYMPIC AND SPORTS KNOWLEDGE Edited by Edward B. Epstein

Sports and Olympic philatelists have, collectively, a great deal of knowledge, which when pooled, can be of mutual benefit. Questions concerning sports and Olympic philately will be assigned a number and published in JSP. Responses to questions will be printed in subsequent issues. Address all questions and answers to your editor: Edward B. Epstein, Paterson Board of Education, 33 Church St., Paterson, NJ 07505 U.S.A. y Q—45 The caption "Equestrian", Golf and Bronze Medals" identifies one of . twelve stamps commemorating the victories won by Hungarian athletes in the 1964 Olympic Games pictured in the 1977 Scott catalog. While the Hungarian stamp (1647) illustrates an equestrian rider and Olympic Gold and Bronze medals official Olympic records indicate that Pierre Jonquieres D'Oriola (France) won the Gold and Peter Robeson of Great Britain took the Bronze for the Individual Grand Prix Jumping event. Germany and Italy won team Gold and Bronze honors in Jumping. During Tokyo's Dressage events Henri Chammartin of Switzerland and Sergey Filatov of the USSR took the Individual Gold and Bronze while the German and Russian teams won the Gold and Bronze in Dressage. The Three'day Equestrian event won by Italy's Mauro Checcoli. Fritz Ligges of Germany cap tured the Bronze. The Italian and German teams won the Gold and Bronze respec tively, for the Three-day Team event. How can Hungary claim victories for these events?

A—45 Hungary does not claim victories for any Equestrian events during the 1964 Tokyo Games. The illustrated stamp in Scott's catalog is miscaptioned; and has been for many years. It is quite evident that the editor os Scott's catalog assumed that since the stamp pictures an equestrian figure he assigned Hungary the Gold and Bronze medals for the riding events. The facts indicate that during the Modern Pentathlon competitors are required to ride a 1,500 meter Prix de Nation type course. The design on the Hungarian stamp illustrates this event, one of the five that make up the Modern Pentathlon. During the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, Hungarian Ferenc Torok took the Pentathlon Gold with 5,116 points. The Bronze was also captured by the Hungarian team of Ferenc Torok, Imre Nagy, Otto Toerek and Pavel Lednyev.

13 REPORT FROM AMPHILEX '77 by Sherwin Podolsky, Assoc iate Ed itor

My correspondent, Laurentz Jonker, reports that five Olympic exhibits won medals at AMPHILEX. The exhibition was held in Amsterdam during late May. Winners include: Manfred Bergman (Switzerland), Gold; Salvatore Caruso (Italy), Gold: H. Mannhart (Switzerland), Vermeil; J.E. Stolk (Netherlans), Silver; H. Beinart (South Africa), Bronze. Olympic items exhibited include: 1906 Greek set complete on cover with Zap- peion special cancel; Portugal 1928 imperforated and on cover; Uruguay 1924 and 1928 on registered covers; 1936 Germany imperforated sheet (no further details); Greece 1896 set complete on First Day cover; black proofs of the Netherlands 1928 fund-raising cards ("never before seen on exhibition"); 1932 precancels; a complete set of covers with the 1936 Olympic registry labels; and a fantastic range of proofs, essays and i imperforates of 1896, 1906, 1920 & 1924. There was of course much more.

At the bourse there were such Olympic delicacies such as: 1906 die proofs for $700 (no other details); the 1906 New Year Card $840; a range of 1932 covers at about $20 each; unused 1936 Austria Olympiafahrt special card unused; various 1896- 1906 covers; Finland 1940 with arrival variety of the XII Olympiad machine cancel, etc. My correspondent admits that "there wasn't much material for sale."

SOME OLYMPIC TERMINOLOGY by Joe Sch irmer, Associate Editor

Over many years in viewing collections; judging; reading various Olympic phil atelic articles and in discussions with collectors, I find that the words "Olympic'' and "Olympiad" are either used interchangeably or incorrectly.

To set the record straight, we offer the following:

1. An Olympiad is a period of 4 years whirh begins in the year of the Games.

2. Olympic counting is done since 1896, when the first modern Games were held.

3. In 1906, 1916, 1940 & 1944 no Games were held. Therefore it is correct to say the "Games of the 21st Olympiad" and not the "21st Olympic Games."

4. The term Olympiad should not be referred to the Winter Games. It would be be correct to say "13th Winter Olympic Games" or "1980 Winter Olympics at at Lake Placid."

The Olympic Games are held during an Olympiad. MEMBERS BOURSE

(Editors Note: This article was translated and edited from the Italian by associate editor Joe Schirmer.)

At the 14th session of the International Olympic Committee held during July 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden, during the 5th Olympic Games, it was decided unan imously to award the VI Games to Berlin over Budapest.

Nevertheless, the was which broke out in 1914 prevented these Games from being held and disappointed those who anxiously awaited These Games as a result of the success of the Games in Stockholm.

Although the VI Olympic Games never took place, it did leave some philatelic items from the preparatory period—1913 & 1914- This material is much sough after by collector specialists in Olympic items.

In 1912, the German Olympic Committee began construction of a large stadium in the Grunewald section of Berlin and to commemorate the start of this work, a postal card was issued on June 8, 1913 showing a panoramic view of the stadium and bore the inscription: Berlin/Grunewald/Deutsches/Stadion/8—6—1913.

This cancellation was used from 13—29 June 1913 commemorating the pre- Olympic competition in preparation for the coming 1916 Olympiad. An abundant supply of vignettes were printed in Germany, Holland and Sweden. Many of these are very scarce today. The Rampacher catalog lists 24 of these vignettes grouped in the following manner: 1. Propaganda vignette issued by the German Athletic Union showing wrest lers along with the inscription OLYMPIADE 1916 BERLIN. In each corner the numeral 10 is shown. These vignettes are black and white on red are are perf orated.

2. Vignettes issued by Gebr, Hartkopf, Berling S. W. 19 shows Victory present ing the laurel crown to an athlete. Printed in white blue and black and perforated.

3. A series of 10 vignettes in green, gold and grey—perforated and showing discus thrower, runner, wrestlers, archer, jumper, fencer, horseman, javelin thrower, weight lifter & boxing.

4. Same as number 3 in green, gold & black.

5. Vignettes issued by the Dutch Olympic Committee showing the head of an ancient Greek god—zig-zag perforations in black, green and gold—with the follow ing inscription: Nederlandisch Olymisch Comite-Zendit Geldelijke Bydrake Hooftstraat A'Dam--this invites people to send contributions to the listed address. 6. Vignettes issued by the Swedish Olympic Committee, perforated and printed in black on white with the inscription: Sverige 1916 with an invitation in Swedish to send contributions.

Besides these vignettes listed by Rampacher, there are others relating to the 1916 Games, particularly those relating to the opening of the Grunewald Stadium. The following are vignettes the author kn ows of:

1. Athlete in foreground, Grunewald Stadium in the background, in yellow, perf orated, with the German inscription: DEUTSCHE STADION WEIHE 8 JUNE 1913 BERLIN GRUNEWALD. It also exists with perforations missing at the top on the right. 16 2. View of the tower of the stadium with a column and the statue of winged victory, perforated, in black with the inscription: DEUTSCHE STADION EINWEIHUNG AM 8 JUNE 1913-

3. View of an equestrian statue, perforated, in black with the same inscription as number 2.

4. View of a portion of the tier seats in the stadium with a large tree, perforated with the same inscription as number 2.

5. Man in uniform with the inscription: SALA/DI HSPOSIZIONE ALLO ZOO 12 April to 3 may 1914 STAGIONE SPORTIVA-the sports event being held to raise funds for the widows and children of newspapermen of Berlin and to collect Olympic funds for the Athletic Union of Berling. They were perforated and print ed in azure blue and black on white and red and black on white.

Finally, there was a series of vignettes issued for the pre-Olympic competit ions held June 13—29, 1913- 1. 2 athletes on the obstacle course; 2 athletes at the bar (translator's note: high jump??); wrestkers, pole vaulter, athlete with flag & laurel crown, man's head with a long beard. All bear the inscription: GAUTURNFEST ESSLINGEN 29 JUNI 1913.

This is all that I know about philatelic materials issued for the 1916 Games. I would welcome correspondence with collectors who may have other 1916 mater ials. Francesco Costantine, Corso Cavour, 60, Bari 70121, ITALY.

Comments: This article covers a portion of the known materials. In the near future SPI will run serially in JSP a complete Handbook of the 1906, 1916, 1940 & 1944 Games combinded. The editor of this handbook will be Joe Schirmer. Members are asked to send Joe data, photos, photocopies, pictures etc. of any items you may have pertaining to these four Games that never were. All contributions will be acknowledged with Joe's thanks. Joe Schirmer, 7300 Blvd. East, North Bergen, NJ 07047. NEWS OF OUR MEMBERS

ADDITIONS, CORRECTIONS, AND DELETIONS IN SECTIONS 19-23

Note i Quite recently Gibbons changed the catalogue numbers on approximately one-quarter of its entries. To correct all these entries would require reprinting of a considerable portion of the check-list; this, of course, is extremely Imprac tical. Accordingly, only those Gibbons numbers which appear in this section because of additions, corrections or deletions will indicate the new Gibbons catalogue ou»- bers. As previously, all additions and corrections have been underlined; all dele tions have been e*4ttera*ea. Entries in parentheses iaply no change; they are used only as points of reference for identification.
