Red Black White MCF #RED BLACK WHITE Directing potential since 1863 7 September 2018 23-2018 From the Headmaster’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians In the next of our series of articles that highlight some of the presentations given at the recent staff development day, we look at the “The Agile Learner”, presented by Melanie Greyling. Author of The Agile Learner, James Anderson, presented an excellent day-long seminar in May 2018 which was attended by some of our staff. The gist of the seminar was finding practical ways of moving leaners along what he called the Mindset Continuum. Importantly, this looks at how to engage students in the processes and behaviours that achieve growth and the development of new talents. A Growth Mindset is the understanding that we can change our most basic characteristics such as our talents and abilities. But achieving that growth requires more than simply the right mindset, it requires the right actions. Growth mindset should not be and is not the “flavour of the month”, it is the foundation of our education. During the seminar, Melanie found herself questioning everything that she had previously defaulted to when standing in front of a class of young men, as she learned to: • Go beyond social media hype to a deep understanding of Mindsets • Stop treating the symptoms of a Fixed Mindset, and learn how to address the underlying causes • Examine the subtle but powerful influence a teacher’s Mindset has on students • Learn how to translate a Growth Mindset into ACTUAL growth • Learn why not all sorts of practice work, and how to encourage Virtuous Practice • Help students grow by showing them how to engage in Effective Effort Melanie said that her classroom habits have been altered, and since the seminar her focus is In this Issue… on giving the boys that she teaches the “recipe” to a From the Headmaster’s Desk 1 good work ethic. Seen through the fresh eyes of impressionable 18-year olds, being a part of the SGB was a daunting task and they did not yet realise the enormous opportunity that was in front of them to learn about effective governance from top leaders. Among the many activities that learners engage in at Maritzburg College, the RCL is yet another area of involvement. It is an integral part of the school system and an official requirement of running a school. At «ja;,.?>s t Kearsney College Chronicle JULY, 1965 Kearsney College Chronicle Vol. 6 No. 1 Juij^ 1965 EDITORIAL We are a very young school, even by South African standards. By comparison with the schools of England, we are only just hatched. But, quite humbly, we wonder whether any other Public or Private boarding school has grown and matured quite as quickly as we have. In a mere 44 years we have grown from 11, housed in a private mansion, to 460, with (as all will agree) buildings and grounds hardly surpassed in the country. In the 25 years at Botha's Hill we have increased by 350, and the original bleak and bare setting can now scarcely be visualised. There is no boasting in this. We are quite convinced that this school was needed, and that throughout its development the hand of Providence has been at work. The early private venture was not allowed to disintegrate, although at one stage faith and sacrifice was needed to save the school from dying. But it was willed that we should survive, and that our faith should be justified. So we see our young life now divided into three parts. There was the period of foundation, under the right Headmaster; a humble unambitious period m which stress was unostentatiously laid on those things which matter: tome, character, humility, tremendous loyalty from those who loved their school. When these foundations were well and truly laid, there followed the second stage, again under the right Headmaster: one of bricks and mortar, a physical develop ment, one which saw us grow and grow, in numbers and influence, until we could regard ourselves as a school which was making a real impact upon the wider community.

  • NOTES and QUERIES Moray Comrie
67 Notes and Queries A letter from MrR. O. Pearse In our last issue, we carried correspondence from the renowned Estcourt headmaster on the subject of Alan Paton and his student and early teaching days, and took the liberty of quoting a mention of Mr Pearse from Paton's autobiography. Mr Pearse has responded to those notes. Before I go any further, I think I should say a word in my own defence. I refer to the Alan Paton episode which I sent you. If you have any keen eyed literary sleuths amongst your readers they have already written to you to say the episode can hardly be correct as Alan left College at the end of 1934, and King George's Silver Jubilee was in the early part of 1935. See the history of Maritzburg College, For Hearth and Home, by Simon Haw and Richard Frame, page 257: 'At the end of that year (1934) he (Paton) accepted a post as the principal of Diepkloof'. With all due respect to the author of a very fine book, Haw is wrong here. (He repeats the error on page 489). I had one year at College on the Staff, 1935, and for the first six months was very closely associated with Alan. The offer of a reformatory post only came to Alan from Hofmeyr round about March, and Alan discussed the offer with me on a number of occasions. I know he left College at the end of June 1935. In his Towards the Mountain Alan gives no date as to when he left College, but there is a very clear clue on page 139, where Alan says, speaking of his arrival in Johannesburg, 'He (Cornelius Olivier, senior probation officer of Johannesburg) put me in his car and took me to see Diepkloof Reformatory.

MCF The “boy crisis” is not just a boy #RED BLACK WHITEissue, any more than gender Directing potential since 1863 violence is a woman’s issue. We as parents, 22 August 2018 teachers22-2018 and coaches at From the Headmaster’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians In the next of our series of articles that highlight some of the presentations given at the recent staff development day, we look at the “The Boy Crisis”, presented by our Deputy Head: Academics, Jeanette Finnie. The idea of a crisis that is affecting our boys was put forward by Warren Farrell and John Gray in a book of the same name. In his book, Warren Farrell says “the problem is that Americans care more about saving whales than saving males”. The question we need to ask ourselves, is why do we need to “save males” and what is this crisis? The “boy crisis” is a: • Crisis of education – globally, boys are 50% less likely than girls to meet basic proficiency in reading, maths and science; by 2020, men’s enrolment at university will be down by 16% on enrolment 50 years ago; young men now only account for 40% of recent university graduates. • Crisis of mental health – ADHD is on the rise in boys; as boys mature into young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women; boys experience feelings of hopelessness and act out on this in a variety of different ways. • Crisis of fathering – boys are growing up often with less involved fathers or absent fathers; many schools find it difficult to find male role-models as teachers, particularly at the primary school level.

Sport Round-Up 14 March 2020 Weekend Sporting Achievements This weekend saw Maritzburg College start its winter fixture programme with most of our hockey and rugby games being played against Northwood. In line with the communication from the President, the school will close on Wednesday 18 March, and all fixtures and festivals are cancelled until the school reopens. Rugby College played matches against Northwood in the main with some filler games played on the stagger against Kearsney, Linpark and Sarel Cilliers. It was a good start to the 2020 Winter Sport Season, with the RedBlackWhite winning 19 of their 25 games, losing just 4 and drawing 2. 1st XV report (Coach: Mr Cameron Fraser) On Saturday 14 March the College 1st XV travelled to Northwood on a hot humid and very sticky day. It was a physical affair and both teams tried to dominate in this epic encounter. College started off with two penalties in the 1st half courtesy of Henry Trodd, the College scrumhalf. Northwood managed to score a try just before half time after a lapse in concentration from the College defense. The half-time score was 7-6 to Northwood. In the second half the Red Black White got their tails up and scored a brilliant try after some great interplay by the backs. Kaid Morsink crashed over for the 1st College try of the day. Henry Trodd again punished Northwood’s ill-discipline and stretched the lead to 7 points. Late in the second half College missed a few tackles off a lineout and the Northwood prop made a searching run.
