We pride ourselves on giving our pupils the tools they need to enter adulthood as confident, capable and adaptable young men and women, at a more affordable cost than most independent schools. We have adopted new practices such as our Positive Education, offering to ensure that our pupils have every opportunity to flourish, not just academically, but in all facets of life. We know that to develop people who will contribute positively in the future we must nurture integrity, respect, trust and compassion. The Hermannsburg ethos, coupled with the option to board or receive weekly transport to and from campus, ensure we are at the forefront of education and accessibility. The Hermannsburg Open Day on March 13 can be booked via appointment on our website. All tours will be in small groups to comply with social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols. MORE TAL K │ EDITIO N 12 │ 26 APRIL 2019 MORE TALK │ EDITION 1 2 │ 26 APRIL 20 19 WEEKLY SCRIPTURE SWEPT AWAY I t ’ s the early hours of Easter Monday morning (01:36 to be precise) and I am awakened from my much - needed beauty sleep by an unusual sound! Has the dog jumped into the pool? Alarmed by this confusing thought I groggily sprint all of four meters, tear back th e curtains and stare at the body of still water. No dog. But…the sound continues. It is an unusual sound to be sure. Ears now awake, I make my w ay t o the opposite window and stare out. There in the dark, broom in hand is my dear wife! She’s ankle deep in wat er chasing the rain’s downpour towards the now unblocked drain. Satisfied, I returned to bed …ha, ha – just kidding. Whilst supporting my wife’s endeavours (at that very hour) I got to thinking how Noah’s generation must have felt struggling to hold bac k the unstoppable rising waters of God’s radical purging. No number of brooms would succeed as the sovereign God metered out Hi s e nd t o an evil world. Social media pinged relentlessly regarding this weekend’s devastation; highlighting again and again all t hat was being swept away. Despite mankind’s natural tendencies God is merciful, and He makes a promise when the waters receded that man and anima l w o uld never endure a flood of that magnitude again. With the recent reminder of our heavy rainfalls, may we a l l hu mb ly acknowledge and recognise His divinity and authority over all.

  • NOTES and QUERIES Moray Comrie
67 Notes and Queries A letter from MrR. O. Pearse In our last issue, we carried correspondence from the renowned Estcourt headmaster on the subject of Alan Paton and his student and early teaching days, and took the liberty of quoting a mention of Mr Pearse from Paton's autobiography. Mr Pearse has responded to those notes. Before I go any further, I think I should say a word in my own defence. I refer to the Alan Paton episode which I sent you. If you have any keen eyed literary sleuths amongst your readers they have already written to you to say the episode can hardly be correct as Alan left College at the end of 1934, and King George's Silver Jubilee was in the early part of 1935. See the history of Maritzburg College, For Hearth and Home, by Simon Haw and Richard Frame, page 257: 'At the end of that year (1934) he (Paton) accepted a post as the principal of Diepkloof'. With all due respect to the author of a very fine book, Haw is wrong here. (He repeats the error on page 489). I had one year at College on the Staff, 1935, and for the first six months was very closely associated with Alan. The offer of a reformatory post only came to Alan from Hofmeyr round about March, and Alan discussed the offer with me on a number of occasions. I know he left College at the end of June 1935. In his Towards the Mountain Alan gives no date as to when he left College, but there is a very clear clue on page 139, where Alan says, speaking of his arrival in Johannesburg, 'He (Cornelius Olivier, senior probation officer of Johannesburg) put me in his car and took me to see Diepkloof Reformatory.
