Pre-Pharmacy

The Doctor of (Pharm.D.) degree is a 4 year program in addition to the completion of pre-requisite courses, which typically takes a minimum of 2 years, but frequently three. At the of Maryland, Pre- Pharmacy is not a degree/certificate granting program, nor does the University offer a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pham.D.) program. However, the University of Maryland does offer the pre-requisite courses.

Some Pharmacy schools do not require applicants earn a Bachelors Degree or have a specific major, students have the option of only completing these pre-requisite courses and if accepted, they matriculate into . Students have the option of completing these courses in 3 years (3+4) or as part of their Bachelors Degree (4+4). All pre-requisite courses do not have to be completed prior to applying to Pharmacy school, nevertheless, completing the majority of these course provides a solid foundation for the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). Once a student has completed the majority of their pre-requisites, they will then apply for admission through the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS).

Some prerequisite courses usually required by most professional phase Pharm.D. programs include, but are not limited to: Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Physics General Biology Human Anatomy & Physiology Biochemistry Microbiology Calculus English Composition Communications Ethics or Philosophy Humanities Behavioral & Social Science Statistics Microeconomics

Students are encouraged to research Pharmacy programs to which they want to apply in order to obtain the most accurate list of pre-requisite courses. Utilize the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy to help find schools and information in their Student Center.
