RECTOR’S NEWS Just as Hilary Term drew to a close came the news of the death of Professor Marilyn Butler, my predecessor as Rector. It filled me with sorrow. She was a transformative Rector, and not just because she was the first female head of any of the ancient colleges in Oxford or Cambridge. Her warmth and her scholarship left their stamp on the College which I inherited and has made my job easier and more pleasant. I owe her a great deal. There will be a memorial service in the College FRANCES CAIRNCROSS Chapel on Thursday 24 April at 3.30pm. All are most welcome. It has not been an easy term. Our students boycotted the Dining Hall for two weeks, distressed by the charge we make to defray a third of the costs of running the Hall. We have begun negotiating an alternative way to finance those costs, through a meal plan which we hope will seem a fairer solution to this vexed problem. We carry most of the costs through our vacation conference and summer-school business and through commercial dinners – but we would rather use our scarce cash to offer financial aid to our poorer students than to relieve the whole student body of the entire bill for overheads. It’s a tough balance. The most cheerful event of the term was undoubtedly the Men’s Football Cuppers PROF MARILYN BUTLER Final, played against St Catz, which I watched at the Iffley grounds on a sunny Sunday evening.

Displaying an immense know­ ledge gleaned from wide reading across disciplinary boundaries, her books and articles have stood the test of time, and are still read with pleasure by students and researchers alike, more than a decade after her publishing career was sadly terminated by illness. Their boldness, accessibility and urbanity aptly represent Marilyn’s engaging personality, her irreverent wit and love of intellectual argument. The guiding principle of her historical criticism was that ‘the writings of the past ask for an educated reading, as far as possible from within their own discourse or codes or cultural system’.1 This was a creed that challenged the ‘New Critical’ and sub­ jectivist principles that guided post­war literary study, as well as the structuralist and post­structuralist criticism that sought to displace it in the 1970s and 1980s. FARNIE and GEOFFREY TWEEDALE 5th Edition 2009 2 Preface to Fifth Edition This is the fifth edition of A Bio-Bibliography of Economic and Social History. Its originator and chief author, Douglas Farnie, sadly did not live to see its completion and publication. He died in Manchester on 21 June 2008, aged 82, following complications from heart surgery. The first edition of Douglas‟s Bio-Bibliography was published in Pat Hudson (ed.), Living Economic and Social History. Essays to Mark the 75th Anniversary of the Economic History Society (2001). It listed about 700 individuals. Characteristically, Douglas had been expanding and revising it ever since. It went through further editions, each more expansive than the last. This edition covers over 3,500 individuals. My involvement began casually in 2001, when I began passing Douglas obituaries and snippets of information for inclusion. The amount of information gathered pace as I began using electronic sources to fill gaps and to supplement the material that Douglas was still collecting from libraries and paper sources. Douglas never used a computer (or even a typewriter) and always preferred to use a pen. However, the world-wide-web fascinated Douglas and when it became apparent that it could transform the scope of the Bio-Bibliography, we began to collaborate on producing a much expanded fifth edition. A routine developed. From early 2007 until 27 March 2008, we met once a week at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School not only to revise the electronic copy of the Bio- Bibliography, but also to scour the web for new material.
