The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for information exchange on a broad range of topics covering science and technology in optical memories. In 2006, ISOM Optical Memory Roadmap final report highlighted the milestones and breakthroughs in next generation optical data storage research, namely, holographic recording, multi-layer recording, two-photon, Super-RENS and near-field technologies. The interface specifications between future technologies and elemental technologies were also discussed. In 2009, the second version of ISOM Optical Memory Roadmap focusing on applications, such as archival systems, audio-visuals, inter-cross business market and so on, will be opened. This is the big chance for participants to discuss new optical memory systems as well as high density technologies or future technologies. The symposium venue, Nagasaki Brick Hall, is centrally located in Nagasaki City. Since opened by the Portuguese in 1571, Nagasaki flourished as a busy trading port and center for Christian missionary activities. In 1641, after the adoption of a national ban on Christianity and the expulsion of the Portuguese, the Dutch trading port and Chinese settlement in Nagasaki became Japan's only points of contact with the outside world. This monopoly lasted more than 200 years and created in Nagasaki a unique blend of cultures and a liberal atmosphere unheard of in other parts of the country. The atomic bomb catastrophe turned a dark page in Nagasaki's turbulent history, but the city is now a center of peace blessed with the beauty of nature and numerous places of historical and cultural interest which still exude the rich flavor of old Nagasaki. SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM ISOM'09 will discuss the current status of optical memory system design and applications, together with new developments in the areas of media, lasers, basic theory including computer simulation, system sub-components, and a range of future technologies. In addition to ordinary contributed papers, a number of invited papers in cutting edge will be presented. Topics to be covered in this symposium include, but are not restricted to: 1. Basic Theory and Physical Optics ・ Structure Analysis ・ Photochemical Reaction ・ Multi-Photon Process ・ Electromagnetic Optics ・ Nonlinear Optics ・ Near-Field Optics ・ Quantum Optics ・ Spectroscopy ・ Simulation 2. Media and Material Science ・ Rewritable, Write-Once, Read-Only Media ・ Characterization, Recording and Readout Mechanisms ・ Manufacturing Technology ・ Substrates, Mastering ・ Super Resolution Media ・ Photochromic and Photorefractive Materials, Other Materials ・ Photonic Crystals ・ Plasmonics, Metamaterials, Nanomaterials 3. Drive Technologies and Signal Processing ・ Drive Integration ・ Mechanics and Electronics Design ・ Servo and Accessing Methods ・ Read Write Channels, Error Correction ・ Modulation Code ・ Copy Protection ・ Image Processing 4. Components and Nano Fabrication ・ Optical Heads, Actuators ・ Lenses, Diffractive Optics ・ Active or Adaptive Optics ・ Light Sources, Detectors ・ Integrated Optical Heads and Components ・ Modulators, Image Sensors ・ MEMS/NEMS Fabrication and Devices ・ Nano Imprint 5. Testing Methods and Devices ・ Testing and Evaluation Methods for Drives, Media and Components ・ Drive Testers, Media Testers 6. Systems and Applications ・ Optical Storage Systems ・ Archival Applications ・ Security Applications ・ Mobile Applications ・ Medical and Bio Applications ・ New Applications 7. High Density Recording ・ Holography ・ Volumetric Storage, Multi Layer Recording ・ Scanning Probe and Near-Field Recording ・ Multiwavelength Recording and Bistable Devices ・ Multi Level Recording ・ Hybrid Recording ・ Other Future Technologies 8. New World - Other Future Science and Technology Available to Information Storage ONLINE SUBMISSION A limited number of original papers are accepted for presentation. The paper has to be submitted as an Adobe PDF-file at the ISOM website (http://www.isom.jp/). ISOM web submission service does not accept PDF files including 2-byte characters (for example, Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters). The local fonts should be removed from the text body and figures before submission. The 2-page summary preparation, 35-word abstract instruction, and submission procedures can be obtained at the ISOM website. Prior to paper submission, a delegated author has to fill in the paper submission form including a 35-word abstract at the website, and then a 2-page PDF summary should be uploaded via the website. Mode of Presentation In addition to oral presentation, which typically consists of a fifteen-minute presentation and five-minute discussion, there will be a poster session during the symposium. The abstract and summary of poster papers will be published in the same fashion as oral papers. Online Abstracts and Summaries Submission: from April 10 to May 29, 2009 Questions to the program committee should be addressed to the ISOM website (http://www.isom.jp/). The presentation schedule will be determined after the program committee has reviewed the papers. Authors will be notified by the middle of July 2009 whether their papers are accepted. The notification e-mail will be sent to the delegated author in the web-registration. All authors who receive notification of their paper’s acceptance by the ISOM program committee are requested to complete the copyright transfer form and promptly return it to the ISOM secretariat by e-mail, fax or postal mail. ISOM Awards and ISOM Student Award The best paper, the best academic paper and the best technical paper are awarded the ISOM prizes. ISOM welcomes student presentations from universities. The best student paper award is also prepared. PUBLICATION OF SYMPOSIUM PAPERS In addition to the Technical Digest available at the symposium, symposium papers will be published as a special issue of the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP) in 2010. The authors who will have, by themselves, presented papers at ISOM’09 will be allowed and strongly encouraged to submit their papers for publication in this special issue. Author’s kits and copyright forms for the paper will be able to be downloaded via ISOM website. The deadline for submission of manuscripts will be announced on the ISOM website by about July, 2009. SOMERVILLE, N. J. REPORT. The Board of Foreign Missions presents to the General Synod its Seventy-second Annual Report, (the forty-seventh of separate and independent action), with mingled satisfaction and regret. It is happy to report, for the third time in succession, the clos ing of the fiscal year without debt. It also rejoices and congratu lates the Synod and the Church that, while the lives of all our be loved missionaries have been preserved, the Board has been able to put into the field more missionaries than in any single year for a long time past. Three ordained men and six women have been sent out from this country and two women added on the field, one in China and one in Arabia. There were thus eleven additions made to the force, all greatly needed and cordially welcomed by the Missions to whom they were added. On the other hand, the receipts for the work of these Missions, under the regular appropriations of the Board, show a decided falling off from last year, and are less than for any year since 1900. They fall $25,000 short of the $135,000 proposed by the last Synod, as the lowest estimate of what should be raised for the foreign work of the Church during the year.

  • The Nagasaki Disaster and the Initial Medical Relief
Volume 89 Number 866 June 2007 Prompt and utter destruction: the Nagasaki disaster and the initial medical relief Nobuko Margaret Kosuge* Nobuko Margaret Kosuge worked at the Centre of International Studies, Cambridge University, as a visiting scholar, and is Professor in International Relations/History at the Faculty of Law, Yamanashi Gakuin University. Her book, Postwar Reconciliation, won the 2006 Ishibashi Tanzan Prize. Abstract The article takes an overall look at the initial medical relief activities in Nagasaki after the atomic bomb fell there on 9 August 1945. In Nagasaki, as in Hiroshima, medical facilities were instantaneously destroyed by the explosion, yet the surviving doctors and other medical staff, though themselves sometimes seriously injured, did their best to help the victims. Medical facilities in adjacent areas also tended to the wounded continuously being brought there; some relief workers arrived at the disaster area when the level of radiation was still dangerously high. This article will in particular highlight the work of the doctors. In the memories of many people the disasters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have remained associated with the liberation and peace that swiftly followed the * Thanks are due to William R. Carter and Keiichi Hayashi for their respective help and suggestions in translating a Japanese-language text of this paper into English. The author also wishes to thank Iwanami Shoten for permission to revise the map from their copyright material, Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum for its assistance, particularly in compiling geographical information about the city of Nagasaki as it was on 9 August 1945, and Philip Towle for his comments and productive criticism on an earlier draft of this paper.

Resurrecting Nagasaki: Reconstruction, the Urakami Catholics, and Atomic Memory, 1945-1970 Chad R. Diehl Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Chad Diehl All rights reserved. ABSTRACT Resurrecting Nagasaki Chad Diehl This dissertation traces the reconstruction of Nagasaki City after the atomic bombing of August 9, 1945 by concentrating on politics and religion. It follows the various people and groups who contributed to the city's rise from the ashes and shaped its image in Japan and the world. In contrast to Hiroshima, Nagasaki did not make its atomic tragedy the dominant theme of its postwar image, and instead strove to rebuild the city in the light of its past as a center of international trade and culture. The most influential group advocating the focus on "international culture" during the early postwar period was the Roman Catholic community of the northern Urakami Valley, which was ground zero. Although Hiroshima became synonymous with the atomic bomb in national and international discourse, Nagasaki followed its own path, one that illuminates the relationship between mass destruction, city history, religion, and historical remembrance. It is a story that sheds a different light on the atomic bombings and their aftermath, not only in comparison with Hiroshima but with other cities destroyed by area bombing and the course of their subsequent reconstruction.
