The Board of Foreign Missions presents to the General Synod its Seventy-second Annual Report, (the forty-seventh of separate and independent action), with mingled satisfaction and regret. It also rejoices and congratu­ lates the Synod and the Church that, while the lives of all our be­ loved missionaries have been preserved, the Board has been able to put into the field more missionaries than in any single year for a long time past. On the other hand, the receipts for the work of these Missions, under the regular appropriations of the Board, show a decided falling off from last year, and are less than for any year since 1900. They fall $25,000 short of the $135,000 proposed by the last Synod, as the lowest estimate of what should be raised for the foreign work of the Church during the year.

Her book, Postwar Reconciliation, won the 2006 Ishibashi Tanzan Prize. Abstract The article takes an overall look at the initial medical relief activities in Nagasaki after the atomic bomb fell there on 9 August 1945. In Nagasaki, as in Hiroshima, medical facilities were instantaneously destroyed by the explosion, yet the surviving doctors and other medical staff, though themselves sometimes seriously injured, did their best to help the victims. Medical facilities in adjacent areas also tended to the wounded continuously being brought there; some relief workers arrived at the disaster area when the level of radiation was still dangerously high. This article will in particular highlight the work of the doctors. In the memories of many people the disasters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have remained associated with the liberation and peace that swiftly followed the * Thanks are due to William R. ABSTRACT Resurrecting Nagasaki Chad Diehl This dissertation traces the reconstruction of Nagasaki City after the atomic bombing of August 9, 1945 by concentrating on politics and religion. It follows the various people and groups who contributed to the city's rise from the ashes and shaped its image in Japan and the world. In contrast to Hiroshima, Nagasaki did not make its atomic tragedy the dominant theme of its postwar image, and instead strove to rebuild the city in the light of its past as a center of international trade and culture. The most influential group advocating the focus on "international culture" during the early postwar period was the Roman Catholic community of the northern Urakami Valley, which was ground zero. Although Hiroshima became synonymous with the atomic bomb in national and international discourse, Nagasaki followed its own path, one that illuminates the relationship between mass destruction, city history, religion, and historical remembrance. It is a story that sheds a different light on the atomic bombings and their aftermath, not only in comparison with Hiroshima but with other cities destroyed by area bombing and the course of their subsequent reconstruction. The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for information exchange on a broad range of topics covering science and technology in optical memories. In 2006, ISOM Optical Memory Roadmap final report highlighted the milestones and breakthroughs in next generation optical data storage research, namely, holographic recording, multi-layer recording, two-photon, Super-RENS and near-field technologies. The interface specifications between future technologies and elemental technologies were also discussed. In 2009, the second version of ISOM Optical Memory Roadmap focusing on applications, such as archival systems, audio-visuals, inter-cross business market and so on, will be opened. This is the big chance for participants to discuss new optical memory systems as well as high density technologies or future technologies.
