Abstract: TheTokatMassifconsistsofapre-Jurassicmetamorphiccomplexthatcropsoutwidelybetween andRefladiyeinthewesternpartofeasternPontides,andwhichcanbecorrelatedwiththeKarakayaComplexof thewesternPontides.ThiscomplexisnamedtheTokatGroup,andisdividedintotwomainunits,namely,the MetamorphicsandDevecida¤Mélange.TheTurhalMetamorphicsformavolcano-sedimentarysequencein thenorthernpartoftheTokatMassif.Thelowerleveloftheformationismadeupofgneiss,amphiboliteandmica schists,whereastheupperpartisrepresentedbyanalternationofmicaschist,phyllite,metaclasticrocks, metabasiteandmarble,whichprobablyreflectsanarcassociation.TheDevecida¤Mélangeischaracterisedbya metavolcano-sedimentaryolistostrome,whichformsthesouthernpartofthemassif.Thisunitisquite heterogeneousandreflects,inplaces,asubductionmélangeand/orafore-arcsequence.TheDevecida¤Mélange mayhaveformedinasettingbetweenasubductionzoneandafore-arc.TheunitsoftheTokatMassifcanbe tracedalongtheeasternPontidesandalsoalongtheNorthAnatolianOphioliticBelt.Theseunitshavebeenaccreted tothemélangeprismastectonicslicesalongtheNorthAnatolianOphioliteBeltbeforetheCampanian.Someof LateCretaceousophioliticmélangeslicesalsocropoutintheTokatGroupasE–W-trendingtectonicslices.The ophiolitesandophioliticmélangearebelievedtohavebeenemplacedbothtothenorthandtothesouthduringthe LateCretaceous.Thenorth-vergentthrustshavebeenlaterrealignedintosouth-dippingthrustsduringa neotectonicphase.

Introduction Ithasalsobeensuggestedthat,atleast,theDevecida¤ ComplexistheequivalentoftheKarakayaComplexofthe TheE –W-trendingPontideorogenicbeltinnorthern Turkey,boundedtothesouthbytheNorthAnatolian westernPontides(Bingöl etal. 1975),andthatit OphioliteBelt(Figure1,Ketin1966),iscommonly representsasubduction-accretioncomplex(Tekeli1981). dividedintothewestern,centralandeasternPontides(Y. TheTokatMassifasawholeisplacedintotheSakarya Y›lmazetal. 1997a,b).Inthisclassification,theTokat ZoneofthePontides(Okay1989;Okayetal. 1991;Okay MassifliesintheeasternPontides.PartsoftheTokat &fiahintürk1997).Y.Y›lmazetal. low-grademetavolcano-sedimentaryrocks.Although tectonicsliceswiththeNorthAnatolianOphioliteBelt similarpre-Liassicunitshavebeenstudiedandnamedin (Figure5). moredetailinthewesternPontides,theoutcropsaround ThisdiscussionshowsthattheTokatGroupextends Tokatarelargeanddistinctiveenoughtowarranta eastwardasfarasthePulurregion.Furthermore,the differentname.TheTokatGrouphasbeendividedinto dykecomplexintheYusufeliregion,andthemetavolcanic twoformations:theTurhalMetamorphicsandthe rocksintheKhramiMassifcaneasilybecorrelatedwith Devecida¤Mélange(Figure4). theBayburt-Pulurregion(A.Y›lmaz1989;Okay&Leven 1996).InthenorthernpartsoftheeasternPontides,in LithologicalFeatures theregionofGiresun,smalloutcropsofpre-Liassic metamorphicrockshavebeenmapped(S.Y›lmaz& TheTurhalMetamorphicsisavolcano-sedimentary Boztu¤1996).Theseoutcropsofmicaschist,phylliteand sequencemetamorphosedinthegreenschistfacies.The calc-schist,extendinginaNE –SWdirectionsouthofthe rocksconsistofanalternationofphyllite,schist, DerelivillageofGiresun,arecorrelatedwiththeTurhal metasiltstone,metasandstone,metatuffandmetabasite. Metamorphics.WereitnotfortheMesozoic–Tertiary Inthelowerpartsofthesection,theserocktypesare coveroftheeasternPontidesandtheTranscaucasus,the accompaniedbygneiss,amphibolite,micaschistand TokatGroupwouldhavemostprobablybeenseento quartzite,andintheupperpartsbycalc-schistand extendnorthtotheDiziseriesoftheGreaterCaucasus marble. MetamorphicsoftheTokatGroupcropoutgenerallyin thenorth,andstructurallyatalowerpositionthanthe Devecida¤Mélange,whichcropsoutinthesouth.The Distribution contactsbetweenthesetwoformationsaregenerally TheTokatGrouphasawidedistributiontothesouth, tectonic,andonlylocallygradational.TheTokatGroup eastandsoutheastofTokat(Figure2).Theoutcropsof showstectonicrelationswiththegranulitefacies theTokatGroupintheAmasyaandTurhalregions(Özcan metamorphicrocksofthePulurMassif.Thesetwo etal. 1980),westofKoyulhisar,andimmediatelysouth differentmetamorphicunitsprobablywereamalgamated oftheNorthAnatolianFaultarethoseoftheTurhal duringtheCimmerideorogeny(Okay1996).TheTokat Metamorphics.Furthermore,theoutcropsnorthof Groupalsoliestectonicallyoverthemetamorphicrocksof A¤vanis,andpartsofthePulurMassifcanbeassignedto theAkda¤madeniGroup,asobservedintheregionof theTurhalMetamorphics(Okay1983,1996).Allthe EvliyaTepenorthofSivas(Figures2&6).Thistectonic outcropsintheseregionsconsistofgreenschist-facies contactisunconformablycoveredbyEoceneclasticrocks. metamorphicrockswithoutexoticblocks.Inregions Thisshowsthattheoceaniclithospherebetweenthe southofTokat,andintheRefahiyeareasouthof TokatandAkda¤madenigroupswascompletely A¤vanis,pre-Liassicmetavolcanicrockscropoutas subductedbytheEocene.
