Each publication has a set of rules, sometimes written, sometimes unwritten, that governs what that publication considers to be a truthful and faithful representation of images to the public. These rules cover a wide range of topics such as how a photographer should act while taking pictures, what he or she can and can’t photograph, and whether and how an image can be altered in the darkroom or on the computer. -

Broadcast Journalism Course Descriptions and Career Recommendations JOUR 402 Broadcast Reporting The class will focus on writing and reporting well-balanced, comprehensive and visually compelling stories. Undergraduate and graduate students research, report, write, shoot and edit stories. During TV day-of-air shifts in the Annenberg Media Center, students learn how to meet the same deadlines that professional reporters handle in small, medium and large markets. They also put together feature packages and could get the chance to do live shots for the nightly newscasts. This class is a MUST for any student who wants to be a TV reporter in news, sports or entertainment. It is also strongly recommended for students who want to learn how to field produce packages. JOUR 403 Television News Production Students sharpen news judgment and leadership skills by producing live day-of-air television newscasts, creating digital content, and using social media. They make decisions about news coverage, stories and presentation while managing reporters, anchors, writers, editors and many others under deadline pressure. JOUR 403 producers will write, copy edit and supervise live shots. Students have used skills learned in JOUR 403 to excel in jobs including local news producing, news reporting, sports producing and network segment producing. This class is a MUST for any student who wants to be the producer of a TV newscast or other type of live program. It is STRONGLY recommended for students who want to be TV news producers and reporters, sports producers or local/network segment producers. JOUR 405 Non-Fiction Television This class introduces students to the process of producing a documentary for digital and broadcast platforms. -

Photojournalism Telling the story pho·to·jour·nal·ism Photojournalism is a branch of journalism focused on using images to tell a story. the art or practice of communicating news by photographs, especially in magazines. What is a photojournalist? A journalist tells stories. A photographer takes pictures of nouns (people, places and things). A photojournalist takes the best of both and locks it into the most powerful medium available - frozen images. What does it take to be a great journalist? A great journalist cares about people and an ideal world. A great journalist can approach a topic as vast as the universe and make it simple and interesting to both Einstein and the new immigrant, who is trying to learn the language. Photography vs photojournalism what's the difference between photography and photojournalism? Photography vs photojournalism what's the difference between photography and photojournalism? VERBS What makes a photojournalist different from a photographer? Photographers take pictures of nouns (people, places and things). Photojournalists shoot action verbs ("kicks," "explodes," "cries," etc.). Photojournalists do shoot some nouns. These nouns can be standard photos of people (portraits), places (proposed zoning areas or construction sites) and things (name it). However, the nouns we seek still must tell a story. To tell a story you need… a sentence which needs a subject, a verb a direct object. News photos need the same construction. Photojournalists tell stories with their images. Also, words are always used in conjunction with photojournalist's images. Here’s an Example :0) Rose is painting the kitchen walls. The subject here is Rose, and what is Rose doing? Rose is painting. -

Original Article Journalism Valuing subjectivity in journalism: Bias, emotions, and self-interest as tools in arts reporting Phillipa Chong McMaster University, Canada Abstract This article examines the meanings and norms surrounding subjectivity across traditional and new forms of cultural journalism. While the ideal of objectivity is key to American journalism and its development as a profession, recent scholarship and new media developments have challenged the dominance of objectivity as a professional norm. This article begins with the understanding that subjectivity is an intractable part of knowing (and reporting on) the world around us to build our understanding of different modes of subjectivity and how these animate journalistic practices. Taking arts reporting, specifically reviewing, as a case study, the analysis draws on interviews with 40 book reviewers who write for major American newspapers, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and prominent blogs. Findings reveal how emotions, bias, and self-interest are salient – sometimes as vice and sometimes as virtue – across the workflow of critics writing for traditional print outlets and book blogs and that these differences can be conceptualized as different epistemic styles. And yet this “mainstreaming” of games coverage has hardly come easily. Aside from the struggles of game critics themselves, who have acutely pointed to their tenuous and dependent relationship on the industry (Nieborg & Sihvonen, 2009), perhaps the most notable portrayal of game culture over the past years has been the Gamergate scandal—one of the most vitriolic chapters in games journalism (Mortensen, 2016). As a consequence, the mainstreaming of games journalism has given rise to critical questions concerning the role of the reporter. What is his/her relationship to the games industry? And, how is she/he shaped by the traditional practices of the press? Our paper is part of an ongoing investigation into contemporary modes of games journalism and seeks to answer these questions through an exploratory study of mainstream US games journalists’ coverage of both their beat and the wider industry. The paper draws on valuable work about the ever-changing role of arts and entertainment critics (e.g. Frey 2015). It also expands on previous analyses that uncovered a network of structural ambivalences among games critics in the enthusiast press (Foxman & Nieborg, 2016), driven in part by its dependency on, yet in a combative relationship with, the industry. -
