Blank-Libra, Janet D., M.A., May 1988 A Guide to Writing for High School Journalists (145 pp.) Director: Warren J. Brier P — This thesis is a high school journalism writing text that addresses the educational needs of a high school journalist. One of its major strengths is that it speaks directly to high school journalists. The author has taken into consideration their u- nique circumstances in the world of journalism, using her experi­ ence as a high school journalism teacher and books written about writing and journalism as resources. Many high school texts ad­ dress journalism as a skill, a trade. Those texts work to ensure that young journalists know the skills and language of the trade. Writing, however, is more than a skill used in a trade. At its best, it is an art. This guide assumes that young journalists need more than reporting and information-gathering skills. They need to worry about the ingredients of good writing, including grammar. This book, therefore, addresses ways in which a high school journalism student can learn to write well. The ingredients of good writing are stressed--sometimes more than once. For example, writers should obviously know that strong writing combines an or­ ganized message with sentences containing strong nouns and verbs. They must learn to use adjectives and adverbs sparingly. The need to write concisely is stressed in many books, but the issue often is not dealt with in depth. The book is organized so that students will immediately enter the task of writing. They first will learn how to write leads, then how to organize a story. In chapter four, they slow down to consider the need to be honest, ethical journalists. The strate­ gies involved in gathering the news and the various types of stories, including the headlines that top them, are discussed in the remainder of the book. The list of writing tips on pages 26 and 27 focuses on problems the author has seen high school journalists struggle with. Stu­ dents are encouraged to return to the list and use it as a check­ list for their work. The articles of high school journalists from across the country are used as examples. Most of the stories are award-winning Quill and Scroll entries. Students are able to examine these stories and see what made them winners. Also included are comments about each story— negative and positive. Students might glean ideas for their own publications from the examples in the book.     Photojournalism Telling the story pho·to·jour·nal·ism Photojournalism is a branch of journalism focused on using images to tell a story. the art or practice of communicating news by photographs, especially in magazines. What is a photojournalist? A journalist tells stories. A photographer takes pictures of nouns (people, places and things). A photojournalist takes the best of both and locks it into the most powerful medium available - frozen images. What does it take to be a great journalist? A great journalist cares about people and an ideal world. A great journalist can approach a topic as vast as the universe and make it simple and interesting to both Einstein and the new immigrant, who is trying to learn the language. Photography vs photojournalism what's the difference between photography and photojournalism? Photography vs photojournalism what's the difference between photography and photojournalism? VERBS What makes a photojournalist different from a photographer? Photographers take pictures of nouns (people, places and things). Photojournalists shoot action verbs ("kicks," "explodes," "cries," etc.). Photojournalists do shoot some nouns. These nouns can be standard photos of people (portraits), places (proposed zoning areas or construction sites) and things (name it). However, the nouns we seek still must tell a story. To tell a story you need… a sentence which needs a subject, a verb a direct object. News photos need the same construction. Photojournalists tell stories with their images. Also, words are always used in conjunction with photojournalist's images. Here’s an Example :0) Rose is painting the kitchen walls. The subject here is Rose, and what is Rose doing? Rose is painting.

A good photojournalist is both a skilled photographer who uses the camera and other equipment to his best advantage. He must also be a thinking creative person who mixes technique and judgement to capture images as they happen because news events do not wait for the photographer. Some photojournalists attempt to make their photographs more interesting by manipulating the image (for example, by making people pose for the photograph). This is wrong as the main task of a photojournalist is to give the viewer an image that is truthful and speaks for itself. Manipulating an image is like making up a news story. It would no longer be journalism but story telling. OBJECTIVES After studying this lesson, you will be able to do the following : z describe the preparedness required for a photojournalist; z explain the work ethics in photojournalim; z discuss the history of photojournalism in India; z enlist some famous photojournalists of India. 28.1 PREPAREDNESS OF PHOTOJOURNALISTS Events wait for no one, especially for photojournalists. A photojournalist must be prepared to act fast and have his camera always at hand. The interesting pictures are most often a result of the alertness of the photojournalist who is at the right place at the right time. If a photojournalist is casual about his job, he is likely to miss many important chances. It is no secret that over the last 4 decades, mainstream media has been consolidated from dozens of competing companies to only six. Hundreds of channels, websites, news outlets, newspapers, and magazines, making up ninety percent of all media is controlled by very few people, giving Americans the illusion of choice. While six companies controlling most everything the Western world consumes in regard to media may sound like a sinister arrangement, the Swiss Propaganda Research center (SPR) has just released information that is even worse. The research group was able to tie all these media companies to a single organization: the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). For those who may be unaware, the CFR is a primary member of the circle of Washington think-tanks promoting endless war. As former Army Major Todd Pierce describes, this group acts as "primary provocateurs" using, "'psychological suggestiveness' to create a false narrative of danger from some foreign entity with the objective being to create paranoia within the U.S. population that it is under imminent threat of attack or takeover." A senior member of the CFR and outspoken neocon warmonger, Robert Kagan has even publicly proclaimed that the U.S. should create an empire. The narrative created by CFR and its cohorts is picked up by their secondary communicators, also known the mainstream media, who push it on the populace with no analysis or questioning.
