Problems in Translating Pessoa's Poetry Into English
Problems in translating Pessoa’s poetry into English John Pedro Schwartz* Keywords Translation, Rhyme, Meter, Personal infinitive, Verb tense. Abstract This paper focuses on five problems all translators of Fernando Pessoa’s poetry into English must grapple with. The first is whether or not to distinguish the poetry of Pessoa (orthonym), Álvaro de Campos, Alberto Caeiro and Ricardo Reis through the use of stylistic and lexical markers. The second is: to what degree should the translator imitate Pessoa’s occasional labyrinthine constructions? Third, every translator must decide at the outset whether or not to use rhyme and meter, where these occur in Pessoa’s poetry. The final two problems concern Portuguese grammar: how to translate the pretérito perfeito do indicativo [simple past tense], which lends itself in English to both simple past and present perfect tenses; and how to translate the personal infinitive, a form unique among all languages for handling a change in subject within a sentence. -

Scientific Exorcisms? the Memory of the Communist Security Apparatus
285 Stefano Bottoni PhD University of Florence, Italy ORCID: 0000-0002-2533-2250 SCIENTIFIC EXORCISMS? ARTICLES THE MEMORY OF THE COMMUNIST SECURITY APPARATUS AND ITS STUDY IN ROMANIA AFTER 1989 Abstract This article discusses the institutional attempts to deal with the archival legacy of the Romanian communist security police, Securitate (1945–1989), during the democratic transition in post-communist Romania. The first part draws a short outline of Securitate’s history and activities as one of the main power instruments of the communist dictatorship. The second part of the article shows the development of political attitudes towards institutional attempts to deal with the communist past in the post-communist Romania. This paper describes the reluctant attitude of the ruling circles in the 1990s towards the opening of the Securitate archives and the lustration attempts. The formation of the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (Consiliul Național pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securității, CNSAS, legally established 1999) hardly changed the general situation: the archives of the Securitate were transferred to CNSAS with significant delays, and the 2008 ruling of the constitutional court limited its lustration competences. The establishment of the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (Institutul de Investigare a Crimelor Comunismului şi Memoria Exilului Românesc, IICCMER, established 2005) and formation in 2006 of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of the Communist Dictatorship Institute of National Remembrance 2/2020 286 in Romania led by renowned political scientist Vladimir Tismăneanu together with the research and legal activities of CNSAS contributed to a broader evaluation of the communist regime (although its impact seems to be limited). -
Romania Redivivus
alexander clapp ROMANIA REDIVIVUS nce the badlands of neoliberal Europe, Romania has become its bustling frontier. A post-communist mafia state that was cast to the bottom of the European heap by opinion- makers sixteen years ago is now billed as the success story Oof eu expansion.1 Its growth rate at nearly 6 per cent is the highest on the continent, albeit boosted by fiscal largesse.2 In Bucharest more politicians have been put in jail for corruption over the past decade than have been convicted in the rest of Eastern Europe put together. Romania causes Brussels and Berlin almost none of the headaches inflicted by the Visegrád Group—Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia— which in 1993 declined to accept Romania as a peer and collectively entered the European Union three years before it. Romanians con- sistently rank among the most Europhile people in the Union.3 An anti-eu party has never appeared on a Romanian ballot, much less in the parliament. Scattered political appeals to unsavoury interwar traditions—Legionnairism, Greater Romanianism—attract fewer voters than do far-right movements across most of Western Europe. The two million Magyars of Transylvania, one of Europe’s largest minorities, have become a model for inter-ethnic relations after a time when the park benches of Cluj were gilded in the Romanian tricolore to remind every- one where they were. Indeed, perhaps the aptest symbol of Romania’s place in Europe today is the man who sits in the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni in Bucharest. Klaus Iohannis—a former physics teacher at a high school in Sibiu, once Hermannstadt—is an ethnic German head- ing a state that, a generation ago, was shipping hundreds of thousands of its ‘Saxons’ ‘back’ to Bonn at 4,000–10,000 Deutschmarks a head. -

The Application and E-C Translation Methods of Common Archaisms in Business Contract
ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 7, No. 9, pp. 798-803, September 2017 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17507/tpls.0709.12 The Application and E-C Translation Methods of Common Archaisms in Business Contract Jialei Hu Department of A14 Business English, Zhejiang Ocean University, Zhejiang Province, China Huixia Lu Institute of Foreign Language, Zhejiang Ocean University, China Abstract—Archaism (Old English) is rare in daily modern English, but often appears in business contracts. Business contract is a legal document, it has its own language style, one of the most typical characteristic is the use of archaism. It is necessary to learn the archaism in detail. This article mainly explores the archaism from three aspects----word-formation law, E-C translation method and the specific use in contracts. Index Terms—archaism, business contract, application, translation I. INTRODUCTION The language of business contract language is a variant of English language and a special English literary form. It belongs to ESP (English for Specific Purposes). In breakdown, the application of archaism is a major feature of contract language. The basic requirement of business contracts is not the beauty of language, but the formal, accurate expressions, to show its rigor. The archaism such as “hereby”, “thereto” used in business contracts makes sentence structures more concise, and texts more solemn. Only to figure out the translation techniques of the archaism can we achieve its function in business contract at a maximum extent. Because archaism can be applied as a mean of linking up in contracts, it is highly vital to draft and translate the contract. -

Substantively, I will discuss the process of state disintegration and reconstruction. Here, I will draw on the experience of Eastern Europe following the collapse of Communism. Today, more than twenty new states occupy the territories formerly held by the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia. Furthermore, the process of breakdown and rebuilding is incomplete, especially in terms of identity issues. For example, while most people have some understanding of how the first Yugoslavia collapsed, few appreciate how the second “rump” Yugoslavia and the surrounding territories remain in flux. Albanians and Slavs are working toward new political and social equilibria in Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and the three mixed municipalities in Serbia proper (Presevo, Bujanovac, and Medvedje). -
Press Realease the Painting Exhibiton “70 Years Of
PRESS REALEASE THE PAINTING EXHIBITON “70 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN ROMANIA AND VIETNAM, 50 YEARS OF FRANCOPHONIE” Location: Vicas Art Studio, 32 Hao Nam, Dong Da, Hanoi Time: Tuesday, 10/03/2020 Today, with your prestigious participation, we inaugurate the Romanian- Vietnamese painting Exhibition, the first of this kind, opened in the highly appreciated Gallery of Art Studio-VICAS, from the National Institute of Culture and Arts of Vietnam. The Exhibition is organized for marking 50 years of Francophonie, a movement with universal vocation, where Romania and Vietnam are very important members, and for celebrating 70 years of the diplomatic relations between Romania and Vietnam. In 2020, the Embassy of Romania in Hanoi and the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Ho Chi Minh will invite you to honor many other activities consecrated to 70 years of traditional and friendship cooperation between our countries: conferences, illustrated by video, visits of important personalities, participation of Romania as honor guest country to the International Trade of Vietnam, in Hanoi, in July, books launching to the Vietnamese Diplomatic Academy etc. On February 3, 2020, our leaders exchanged congratulatory messages. The Exhibition presents valuable works of Romanian classic and contemporary painting and precious works of the Vietnamese painter, Madame Van Tuong Thanh. Romanian painting in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries brings a whole range of changes, most Romanian painters doing their studies in Bucharest and Paris, France, which explains the formation of their own working style, by combining elements of modernism with those traditional. I will refer only to three of the great Romanian painters of our Romanian- Vietnamese Exposition. -
