View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by DSpace@MIT 1 Chapter 12: Identity, Rationality, and Emotion in the Processes of State Disintegration and Reconstruction Roger Petersen I wish to address both a substantive and a methodological issue in this chapter. Substantively, I will discuss the process of state disintegration and reconstruction. Here, I will draw on the experience of Eastern Europe following the collapse of Communism. Today, more than twenty new states occupy the territories formerly held by the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia. Furthermore, the process of breakdown and rebuilding is incomplete, especially in terms of identity issues. For example, while most people have some understanding of how the first Yugoslavia collapsed, few appreciate how the second “rump” Yugoslavia and the surrounding territories remain in flux. Albanians and Slavs are working toward new political and social equilibria in Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and the three mixed municipalities in Serbia proper (Presevo, Bujanovac, and Medvedje). In Montenegro, the Slavic population is divided over whether they are Montenegrins, Serbs, or simultaneously Montenegrins and Serbs. In the Sandzak, people are debating whether they are Bosnjaks or just Muslims. In Moldova, a Dniestrian Republic rules a sliver of land on the left bank of Dniester River while the Gagauz have been given ethno-territorial autonomy within the entity on the right bank. In the Baltic republics, citizenship laws continue to be a matter of controversy. Methodologically, I wish to address the relationship between rationality and emotion within the process of state disintegration and reconstruction. -

I declare that my thesis consists of 96,500 words. 2 Abstract This research project explores Romania’s process of detachment from Moscow from 1953 to 1963 within the context of the global Cold War. Through a multi-archival investigation, the dissertation investigates the first full process of peaceful de-satellization within the Eastern bloc by considering the broader framework of the bipolar international climate. In so doing, it provides both a bottom-up, as well as a top-down analysis. This project focuses, in particular, on the tenure of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (1947-65), Romania’s first Communist leader, as it was under his leadership that the country shifted from complete subservience to the Soviet Union to political and economic autonomy. -

Time and again people assume that national identity is homogeneous and that it manifests itself in a particular language and culture. Nowadays, translation takes place in such a context where identity, culture or tradition is no longer homogeneous. In the process of translation – since so many new traditions and cultures are brought into focus – identities are slowly fading out or removed to make way for new ones. Translation allows existing identities to open up as host languages and cultures and it makes the creation of new areas of identity easy, the result resting upon the translator’s ability to bridge cultural differences. This present article provides a glimpse into the labor the translators go through when it comes to maintaining and negotiating meaning, identity and cultural differences between two languages. VITORIA, A WOMAN “WHO RUNS WITH THE WOLVES” Laura MAFTEI* Universitatea Adventus din Cernica Tatiana BARBAROŞ** Universitatea „Ovidius” din Constanța *[email protected] **[email protected] Vitoria, a Woman “Who Runs with the Wolves” Vitoria Lipan is the heroine of The Hatchet novel, published in 1930 and written by the Romanian writer Mihail Sadoveanu. A representative character of Romanian literature, Vitoria Lipan – who is a simple, uneducated, yet intuitive peasant woman – reveals a way of thinking and acting that leads her to success. She lives in a traditional, rural society, where a simple woman could hardly be given the opportunity to find her deceased husband by herself, by retracing his death itinerary and exposing the culprits like a detective. Nevertheless, in this short mythical realistic novel we can identify several inner strategies that enable this simple mountain woman to succeed. Our study focuses on the internal psychological structure of the heroine and tries to relate her to the archetypal image presented by the author Clarissa Pinkola Estés, in her study on stories and myths of the wild woman archetype. Introduction In the opening of her Women Who Run With the Wolves bestseller, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Jungian psychoanalyst and writer, who has extensively studied the myths and stories of many peoples, puts forward some amazing ideas on the genuine essence of the woman, intuitive and creative in her internal structure, yet suffocated by culture and society, which have tried to civilize her by imposing upon her rigid roles that are foreign to her entity: “No matter by which culture a woman is influenced, she understands the words wild and woman, intuitively.
