A half-century later, the mother of all music festivals still resonates ifty years after the fact, it still resonates with us. Tucked up in the Catskill Mountains, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair — promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition, Three Days of Peace and Music,” but known to one and all as simply Woodstock — took place in 1969 over three-plus days. From Friday, Aug. 15, through the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, dairy farmer Max Yasgur’s 600- acre parcel of land in Bethel, New York — forever immortalized in Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (ironically, she wasn’t at the event itself) — became the epicenter of the music and cultural universe, a haven for 400,000-plus hippies, bohemians, music lovers and mem- bers of the counterculture. It began when folkie Richie Havens began strumming his gui- tar, kicking off the festival with Paul Gerry/Bethel Woods Collection “From the Prison.” Thirty-two more acts, about 66 hours and several rainstorms later, it ended when guitar god Jimi Hendrix capped off a stellar set with his rendition of “Hey Joe.” Thousands of cars were left stranded for miles and miles en route to the venue as concertgo- ers walked to their destination. Tickets for the festival were $18, but many attendees got in for free when the crowd more than tripled what organizers had anticipated. Bobby Rigg Transcript 2:37:17 CK: The following interview features local rock and roll hero Bobby Rigg. It took place on November 17, 2015 and is conducted by Carole Cadarette and Cindy Kus. Rigg brought rock and roll to Alpena in the early 1960’s with his band The Chevelles; then went on to form The Frost, one of Detroit’s premier 60’s rock bands. CC: Let’s talk about how you got started. BR: Well, my father was a drummer in, in the Big Band era, and, ah, he was from Ohio and he, they, ended up coming up here and playing at the Trianon Ballroom. The Trianon Ballroom was above what is now known as Alpena Furniture- it was upstairs, along with a bowling alley. And ah, so the Big Band came up here and my dad just fell in love with this area. Ah, ended up getting married to my mom, Rita, ah, and he owned the Midway, he owned the, ah, Dairy Bar on, on Chisholm Street, and ah, then Tubby’s restaurant downtown. And ah, a very successful entrepreneur, him and my mom worked so hard and ah, but my dad was a drummer and a singer- had a wonderful voice, and ah, you know in, in the Big Band era and so the drums were always there. I remember at three years old, walking down the street with this little, it was a little snare drum, it only had one head on it, I still have it. And then the snares were right under that top head and there was no bottom head on it and I’d strap it to me with a belt and I’d walk up and down the street playing this…drum.

It was three nights of incredible music brought to the Rocky Mountain Region by an upstart concert promoter named Barry Fey. Pop/rock festivals were a new invention, and Fey attempted for his event to follow a mold that had been created two years earlier at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival in northern California. Musical acts like The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Creedence Clearwater Revival electrified the Denver crowds, but what stole the show each of the three nights was gatecrashing and protests that resulted in violence, arrests and police brutality. Each night’s violence dominated the media coverage of the festival, but the media, the police, and even Fey all failed to understand why the violence occured. In this paper I trace the origins of the pop festival and link it to a cultural movement that sprung from the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, ii California.

Bio (100 words): Pianist and composer Kerry Politzer is a native East Coaster who has resided in Portland since 2011. Her Brazilian jazz project, Bossa PDX, received RACC Project Grant funding to explore the works of Rio-born guitarist/composer Durval Ferreira. This set will feature Politzer’s compositions inspired by Ferreira’s work. She is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and a disciple of late jazz guru, Charlie Banacos.
