Our City

Aim: Create a piece of art based on a part of our city that brings you happiness.

Materials: Whatever materials you have to hand.

In this activity, we’d like you to create a piece of artwork based on a part of our city that brings you happiness. For example, this place could be a library, your favourite shop, the place where you meet up with friends. It could be the home of your favourite person, the place where you walk your dog or even an outdoor space. If you’re happy there, have great memories of the place and it’s located within the city then we want to see it! There are no limits to the materials or colours you can use to create your artwork, just use whatever you can find. This might be pencils and paper, paints, clay, LEGO, a camera, whatever you want. Be creative, have fun and we’re looking forward to seeing all your favourite places. Look at the examples below for ideas.

Things to remember:

Our City Drama Task: Create a Drama ‘skit’ about our City

The difference between ‘a skit’ and a drama performance, is that skit is a short comic performance while drama is a composition, normally in prose, telling a story and intended to be represented by actors impersonating the characters and speaking the dialogue. The verb skit means to make fun of. Celebrating our City

What we need to do;  You are going to create a ‘skit’ to celebrate our City.  We need to think of funny things about Derry or funny things that have happened to you.  If you want to do a short monologue (one person speaking about their thoughts and feelings) or a story about Derry – from the past from the present (or comparing the two) or describe the city to a tourist or to someone who doesn’t live here – that is absolutely fine! It would be great to hear any of your stories or adventures! Things you may want to think about:

 Could you rewrite a song to tell people about Derry?  Could you dress up as a character from Derry and talk from their point of view?  What are your favourite parts of the City, what makes Derry special to you?

Drama Ideas Characters the way we talk  Funny things people say  Things that happened during lockdown in Derry the kind of  What makes our city different from informal language we use? other cities  Think about youtube videos and tik E.g. ‘Me head’s fried’

toks you have seen over this time I’m thinking of Derry slang here.

Funny things about our city? Can we do it in pairs small groups? Derry has always been famous for Music, Art and Theatre too! Remember social distancing! And especially the warmth and friendliness One person could start the drama of the people AND the CRAIC! then someone else could reply on a 5 different video

-You will either need to record the interview or make notes while the person is talking.

-Write an introduction explaining who the person is and what he/she has to do with our city.

-Write out the question asked and the person’s answer.

-Write your headline (title) last.

-Include images and check the spelling, grammar and punctuation of your article.

-There is no word limit but the minimum is 500 words.

Help/Examples:

There are excellent examples of this type of interview in the Derry Journal’s ‘Friday’s Child’ feature. Our City Year 10 Maths Project-Population Change in Derry

A report on population change in Derry City from 1911 to 2011

The population of Derry has doubled over the course of the last century from 1921 to 2011. In this project you will look at how and when the population data was collected, create a report complete with statistical diagrams, analyse the data and make a prediction for the population for next year. The next census is due to take place in 2021.

There are three levels to this assignment, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze will be the most basic level and Gold the most challenging. To achieve Gold you must complete all of the Bronze and Silver tasks also. You must conduct research for this project and there are Mathswatch and Corbettmaths video links attached to help you refresh any of the maths you may need help with.

These are the population figures provided by Nisra from the Censuses for the last Century:

Year Population Year Population 1911 40 780 1971 52 205 1926 45 159 1981 63 472 1937 47 813 1991 72 334 1951 50 092 2001 83 652 1961 53 762 2011 81 902

Yes Partially No Success Criteria Checklist Bronze Explained what a census is and how often it is carried out Silver Produced a table of Derry’s population starting from 1921 to 2011 with figures rounded to 2 significant figures (rounded to the nearest 10 000) or Bronze Produced a table with figures rounded to nearest 1000 Produced a range of diagrams, you can draw by hand or use excel: Bronze Bar chart Silver Pie chart Gold Scatter graph and line of best fit Silver Explained what your graphs, charts and diagrams show in relation to the population growth of Derry City Bronze Identified between which successive decades did the population grow the most and by how much. Identified between which successive decades did the population decrease and by how much. Gold Calculated the percentage change in population growth or decay between each census (each decade) and what the overall percentage change from 1921 to 2011 was. Silver Explored and identified reasons for the population growth from 1921 to 2011 and Gold Discussed possible reasons for population decline between censuses. Bronze Made a prediction for the population from the 2021 census based on your research and findings Bronze My work is well presented, shows good organization and creativity. I have included images, colour, tables, diagrams and charts to present the report clearly. I have a title, sub headings and clearly labelled all my tables, graphs and charts.

Further explanation/guidance on the task Introduction: Your report should begin by explaining that you are researching the growth of Derry City’s population over the last century and explaining what a census is and why it is carried out. Data: Next you should round the population figures so they are easier to work with and present them in a table. Statistical Diagrams: Using the table you have drawn you should then begin constructing your charts and graphs. Inferences: Once you have drawn your charts and graphs, make some inferences about what they show, i.e. what can you tell from looking at your bar chart and other diagrams. Population differences between the decades: The next section of your report is looking at the actual differences in the number of people over the years. For example: The population increased between 19?? and 19?? by ? amount. The population decreased between 1991 and 19?? by ? amount. You want to identify between which decades the population increases and which decade had the biggest growth/difference. It is important that you identify any decades whereby the population decreased as you will hopefully discuss this in subsequent sections. Percentage Growth or Decay between the Decades: The next section, if you choose to do it, will be looking at the percentage change between each decade. For example in 2001 the population was 83 652 and in 2011 it decreased to 81 902. The percentage change will be: 푐ℎ푎푛𝑔푒 83 652−81 902 × 100 = × 100 = 2.092 ~2.1% 푑푒푐푟푒푎푠푒 표푟𝑖𝑔𝑖푛푎푙 푎푚표푢푛푡 83 652 You will then identify, from your calculations, between which successive decades had the greatest percentage change in their population growth or decay. Possible reasons for population growth over the last century: The next section is where you research and explore various reasons for why you think the population has grown so much between 1921 and 2011. Which decade saw the biggest growth? Why this might have been and also where you explore possible reasons why the population has at times decreased. Are people having bigger families or what else could cause such large growth? Prediction for 2021: The final section is where you make an educated prediction of what you think the population of Derry City will be in 2021, you can give an exact figure or round it to the nearest 10 000. Make sure your report is organised, neat and easy to understand. Mrs Kealey and Mrs Rogan will be choosing the winners for the best and most creative projects so ensure that they are able to fully understand your report. Good luck and most of all enjoy it!

Our City-Religion

Your Task: Compose a prayer to St. Columba.

St. Columba means the “dove of the church” and was born in County Donegal in 520/521. Columba is said to have founded a monastery in Derry in 545. St. Columba (Colmcille) is the patron saint of Derry. In this way, we think and pray to him as someone who can protect us and strengthen the city of Derry.

You can create this on Microsoft Word, or on an A4 page.

Once you have written your prayer, design it and make it beautiful to look at and read.

Some ideas to help you: Think about what you are grateful for. Think about what makes you happy in your city. How faith is an important part of Derry. How we are blessed to have St. Columba as our patron Saint.
