FAIRWAY DATA Channel alignment and marking: The channel begins S of Utö near the edge mark Formansbådan and continues as a 15.3 m channel across the Archipelago Sea to the Port of Naantali. 19 lines. Length about 120 km/65 nautical miles. Mainly lateral marking. Lighted. Fairway dimensions: Design vessel: 105000 dwt tanker, l = 292 m, b = 44 m, t = 15,3 m. Max. authorised draught 15.3 m, minimum depths (MW2005): outer section 17.4 m, inner section 16.8 m and in the harbour area 16.5 m. Minimum width 200 m. Anchorage and special areas: The minimum depth has been confirmed in the following areas where the channel is wid- ened: at Snökobben, E of Berghamn, at Vattkast, S of Väärämaa, at Airisto and Ruissalo. The areas are market with car- dinal marks, with the exception of Snökobben, and the areas can be used for anchorage and passing. There are also areas where the depth has been confirmed and that can be used for example as waiting places, in Keitsor- sten -13.5 m and in the Naantali harbour area -10.0 m.
FAIRWAY NAVIGABILITY Navigation conditions: The outer section of the channel between Utö and Kalkskärskobb is poorly sheltered, which can hamper radar navigation and navigation in rough seas. From Kalkskärskobb to Smörgrund the channel is clear and navi- gation easy; from Smörgrund to the harbour it is sheltered and well marked. But navigation in the narrow passages at Smörgrund and Lövskär as well as near the seat of the ice ferry at Riskholmen require special attention and caution. Ice conditions: In the outer section of the channel between Utö and Smörgrund ice conditions vary: sometimes there is hardly any ice formation and at other times the ice moves and the buoys can be under the ice. In the inner section of the channel between Smörgrund and the harbour there is usually 10 – 60 cm thick fast ice, which, owing to the busy ferry traffic, remains quite passable during the winter season.
TRAFFIC RECOMMENDATIONS (channel and harbour) Speed limits and recommendations: Between Smörgrund and Finnö there is a speed limit of 28 km/h and between Finnö - Lilla Björnholm speed limit is 32 km/h. Between Rajakari and Ajonpää a speed limit is 22 km/h. There is also a speed limit at the ice ferry seat at Riskholmen when the ferry is in operation. Vessels with a draught close to the max. authorised draught are requested to beware of shoals and the causing of squat in the following areas: SE of Svartbådan, W of Utö, at Torvskär, between the southern part of Länggadd and Gråskär, between Berghamn and Smörgrund and Kyrkfjärden, at Lövskär and in Airisto at the three 16,8 m shoals.
