    From the Sacred to the Profane: The Oblation Ritualized FROM THE SACRED TO THE PROFANE: THE OBLATION RITUALIZED Reuben Ramas Cañete ABSTRACT The study approaches the historical construction of the narratives surrounding the statue titled Oblation, deemed as the symbol of the University of the Philippines (UP), from the theoretical perspective of Eric Hobsbawn’s notion of “invented traditions,” as well as Judith Butler’s theory of performativity. The study looks at the genesis of this narrative as informed by the anti-colonial struggle of the late-19th and early 20th century, but amplified and “sacralised” through the symbolic power of the UP Presidency, particularly under Jorge C. Bocobo (1935-1939) under whose auspices the Oblation was erected on November 30, 1935. The study also foregrounds the key term “Sacrificial Body” as a determinant of the Oblation’s narrational focus of itself as subject, and its function as idealized model or template to be “followed” by the UP community. The ambivalence of this narrative, however, is central to the production of contradicting discourses throughout its history, from the “sacred” Pre-War image akin to a secular Crucifixion upon which rituals supervised by a “priesthood” composed of the University’s officials were enacted; to the Post- War secular (and thus “profane”) image of the Oblation as that “representing academic freedom” from the viewpoint of its progressive student body and faculty. Moving from the private to the public and even online sphere, the unclothed body provides a powerful method to muster anyone’s attention with success. Nevertheless, given that there are many insinuations a nude body can possibly suggest, there arise a magnitude of complexities and contradictions involved in using nudity. Thus, the use of such vehicle for protest yields not only advantages but social and political repercussions as well. In line with this, the study provided the motivation behind the continued usage of such method amidst the risk of conflicts and misunderstandings, gathered the perception of the public through a community survey, expert and in-depth interviews, and lastly, offered an understanding of the phenomenon of Political Nudism through review of related literature, data collection, and analysis using four theories: Social Constructivism, Phenomenology, Symbolic Interactionism and Structure-Agency Theory.

Padilla, 9th chancellor of UP Manila, was reappointed to a second term by the UP Board of Regents during its 1331st meeting held on 18 October 2017. She will serve from 1 November 2017 to 31 October 2020. Dr. Padilla is the third woman chancellor of the University and the fourth to enjoy a second term since 1983. She was the lone nominee for the post after a two-month search conducted by a Search Committee (SC) created by UP President Danilo Concepcion, together with the SCs for UP Los Banos and UP Visayas chancellors. The UP Manila SC was chaired by Prof. Lourdes Abadingo, former secretary of UP, the BOR, and former Faculty Regent. Meanwhile, Chancellor Padilla recently received the “5th R. Rodney Howell Award for Excellence in Newborn Health” in Minneapolis UP President Danilo Concepcion presents his vision, plans and programs for the next six years during his investiture held at the (Minnesota, USA). The award is in recognition of her University Theater, UP Diliman. leadership in improving the lives of newborns and in her visionary work in enhancing human genetics, Atty. Danilo L.
