    From the Sacred to the Profane: The Oblation Ritualized FROM THE SACRED TO THE PROFANE: THE OBLATION RITUALIZED Reuben Ramas Cañete ABSTRACT The study approaches the historical construction of the narratives surrounding the statue titled Oblation, deemed as the symbol of the University of the Philippines (UP), from the theoretical perspective of Eric Hobsbawn’s notion of “invented traditions,” as well as Judith Butler’s theory of performativity. The study looks at the genesis of this narrative as informed by the anti-colonial struggle of the late-19th and early 20th century, but amplified and “sacralised” through the symbolic power of the UP Presidency, particularly under Jorge C. Bocobo (1935-1939) under whose auspices the Oblation was erected on November 30, 1935. The study also foregrounds the key term “Sacrificial Body” as a determinant of the Oblation’s narrational focus of itself as subject, and its function as idealized model or template to be “followed” by the UP community. The ambivalence of this narrative, however, is central to the production of contradicting discourses throughout its history, from the “sacred” Pre-War image akin to a secular Crucifixion upon which rituals supervised by a “priesthood” composed of the University’s officials were enacted; to the Post- War secular (and thus “profane”) image of the Oblation as that “representing academic freedom” from the viewpoint of its progressive student body and faculty.     UPD_EDUC_EDFD_CV_CCamposano Clement Castigador Camposano, Ph.D. Profile Clem Camposano earned his Ph D. in Philippine Studies (Anthropology) from the Tri-College Program of the University of the Philippines - Diliman in 2009. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from U.P Diliman (1992) and a B.A. in Political Science and History (double major) from U.P. Visayas (1986). His current research interest is in the anthropology of contemporary migration, anthropology of education, Philippine history and culture, as well as citizenship and civic education. He has published articles in scholarly and peer-reviewed journals and has consistently presented academic papers in both local and international conferences. He is the current President of the Philippine Studies Association (PSA) and served in the board of the Anthropological Association of the Philippines/Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao (UGAT) until 2016. As a practicing ethnographer, he actively works with the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) in providing trainings in qualitative research methods to the academic staff of various educational institutions. He also sits in the Editorial Advisory Board of Filipinas: Journal of the Philippine Studies Association, Inc. Dr. Camposano has had a long academic career, serving various institutions in different capacities. He is presently a faculty member at the Division of Curriculum and Instruction – Educational Foundations, College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman where he teaches courses in the anthropology and sociology of education. Prior to joining U.P. HERENANDEZ Year 2021 unfolds as the ‘unspoiled page in our book of time’ now at our disposal. It comes as our next chance to objectify past lessons learned, and hopefully avoid lapses/errors as we write out “Chapter-2021” of our journey called life! The first month of the year --- January --- is aptly named after the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and doorways; of entrances and exits. Janus bears a double-faced head so he can look back to the past while at the same time look ahead to the future. It implies the ability to readily reflect on last year’s learning. At the same time, look forward with circumspection to address the year ahead. New Resolve During this month, the so-called “new year’s resolution” comes to mind. When taken seriously, it could gain traction in engaging the WILL to: (1) chart a fresh lease of life; (2) break away from habits that blot yesterday’s copybook; and (3) imbibe positive qualities --- virtuous not vicious --- to influence human nature’s natural driving forces [like ambition, impatience, self-concept, even selfishness... neutral forces essentially, writes international best-selling author Brian Tracy] and channel them to actions that edify not degrade, build not destroy, help not harm, and be a blessing to others! In the good-old-days, “new year’s resolution” was often the subject of school compositions.
