It is argued that political transformation during this period was closely influenced by a much longer period of unprecedented social change preceding the politics of this period. It is suggested that the ideologisation of ethnic identities is likely to occur when structures of community are disrupted by changes in the contemporary world such as economic fluctuations or state policy interventions. One result is to disrupt traditional village communities so as to place individuals in stress situations making them susceptible to new nationalist ideologies. The other impact is to dislocate authority structures so that both incumbent and aspiring elites lose their power and authority and thus search for new ways in order to re-establish their moral and political legitimacy. It is argued that nationalism is able to offer a resolution to social disruption and thus to the community in search of social cohesion, while also functioning to rebuild elite authority. In ethnic nationalist ideology, insecurities and feelings of isolation are ameliorated by subsequent constructions of ‘us’ and ‘them’ where members of one distinct community are demarcated from other communities. It is suggested that myths of ancestry and homeland together with counterposed moral dichotomies appealed to the Ambonese who needed this form of ideological support. It is the insecurities and fear experienced by disrupted communities which promote this powerful ideological formula. It is asserted that conflict on the island has been characterised by this trend towards ideological absolutism where two conflicting ideological constructions have translated the conflict into a non-negotiable confrontation between opposing national rights.     Peace and Conflict Studies III Spring Semester 2013 Supervisor: Kristian Steiner Faculty of Culture and Society Department of Global Political Studies The Conflict in the Moluccas: Local Youths’ Perceptions Contrasted to Previous Research Martin Björkhagen Words: 16 434 Abstract The violent conflict in the Moluccas (1999-2002) has occasionally been portrayed in terms of animosities between Christians and Muslims. This study problematizes that statement by analysing several conflict drivers seen through two perspectives. The first purpose of this study was to contrast previous research regarding conflict factors in the Moluccas to the perceptions of the local youths’. There is a research gap regarding the youths’ experiences of the conflict, which this study aims to bridge. A second purpose was to analyse discrepancy between the academic literature and the youths’ bottom-up perspective. The final purpose was to apply the theory of collective guilt to explain and analyse the youths’ memories and perceptions regarding the conflict factors in the Moluccas. The qualitative case study approach was adopted since it could include both in-depth interviews and an assessed literature review. Six in-depth interviews were conducted in Indonesia which explored the youth’s perceptions. The critically assessed literature review was used to obtain data from secondary sources regarding the same conflict factors, as was explored by the interviews. The first part of the analysis exposed a discrepancy between the two perspectives regarding some of the conflict factors. The collective guilt analysis found that the youths only seem to experience a rather limited feeling of collective guilt. This is because all strategies to reduce collective guilt were represented in the youths’ perceptions.

Ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples in Southeast Asia GERARD CLARKE ABSTRACT This paper examines the impact of development, including the impact of government and donor programmes, on ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples in Southeast Asia. Through an examination of government policy, it considers arguments that mainstream development strategies tend to generate conflicts between states and ethnic minorities and that such strategies are, at times, ethnocidal in their destructive effects on the latter. In looking at more recent government policy in the region, it considers the concept of ethno- development (ie development policies that are sensitive to the needs of ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples and where possible controlled by them), and assesses the extent to which such a pattern of development is emerging in the region. Since the late 1980s, it argues, governments across the region have made greater efforts to acknowledge the distinct identities of both ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples, while donors have begun to fund projects to address their needs. In many cases, these initiatives have brought tangible benefits to the groups concerned. Yet in other respects progress to date has been modest and ethnodevelopment, the paper argues, remains confined to a limited number of initiatives in the context of a broader pattern of disadvantage and domination. Ama Puk is a prosperous coffee farmer in Vietnam’s Dak Lak province. A member of the Ede (E De) minority, Ama lived in perennial poverty as a subsis- tence rice producer until the establishment of the state-run Ea Tul Coffee Company in 1985.

Signed: On: 19/12/2014 ii Abstract Women Under Sharia: Case Studies in the Implementation of Sharia-Influenced Regional Regulations (Perda Sharia) in Indonesia This study examines the religious, social and political dynamics of Perda Sharia and how the implementation of these regulations has affected women rights and women’s security. This study also explores the concept of women’s security based on women’s own experiences. It employed qualitative methodologies, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and analysis of primary source documentation. It examined Perda Sharia in two district governments: Cianjur, West Java and Bulukumba, South Sulawesi. My research argues that Perda Sharia was the outcome of the local political processes reflecting the interaction of regional autonomy, democratisation and the Islamic resurgence. Given the struggle for Sharia since Indonesian independence, the widespread implementation of Perda Sharia suggests that it has been widely accepted as part of the legal system in district governments. This research found that the implementation of Perda Sharia has strengthened the position of Islam as a social and cultural force, but not necessarily of Islam’s influence in politics or government and as such it is a great accomplishment for its supporters.

This thesis proposes a theology of sexual violence based on Christian encounters with Javanese folk religion that assume experiences with the spirit world. It systematises the theological thoughts on human being of two Javanese Christian leaders: Paulus Tosari and Daud Tony; extrapolates the systematised thoughts into the field of sexual violence; and compares it with a theology of sexuality from the Western Church, Theology of the Body. The thesis argues that sexual violence begins with the perversion of the sexual narrative in the human lower soul by the spirit world and consequently affects the body: sexuality is then perceived as a means to salvation rather than an analogy to salvation. My dissertation takes a sociocultural perspective in addressing how autism is recognized, interpreted, and responded to in Javanese Indonesia. Based on 12 months of multi- sited ethnographic fieldwork in Yogykarta and Jakarta, I have a) documented how autism is being introduced to and taken up by Javanese families, b) addressed the benefits and challenges of using autism as an interpretive framework for developmental difference, and c) considered the reactions to and implications for some of the interventions that have been attempted thus far.

    The Standardisation of Pencak Silat 45 Chapter 1 The Standardisation of Pencak Silat: Javanisation, Nationalism, and Internationalisation Jean-Marc de Grave 1 Introduction: Standardisation and Social Context When talking of local Indonesian “martial arts,” based on their regional ritual conceptions and practices, a process of standardisation clearly emanates from the contemporary political domain, in its interaction with the Indonesian nation state.1 In this political perspective, theoretically proposed as autono- mous from religion, the ritual dimension of martial arts is secondary. In the process of standardisation, techniques and transmission systems are formalised, notably through the use of written media. This chapter provides a reflection on the rationalising process in relation to traditional techniques of martial arts through the creation of formal federations. I will illustrate the broader background in which this process occurs and the groups and institu- tions specifically concerned. These descriptions will drive me to evaluate the impact of regional, national and international federations plus the embodied knowledge they put into practice at the larger scale of Indonesian principles of action and values. In the analysis, I will partially disentangle the influence of martial arts from abroad and western bodily techniques, as well as local conceptions dealing with body practices. The role of the Taman Siswa educative movement net- works during the nationalist period will also be mentioned. This information will help us to understand the context of the national and international pencak silat federations. These federations were created alongside the establishment of competitive disciplines. The diachronic perspective shows that the national sports politics has been tied to the prevalence of the Javanese in the Indonesian federation, which parallels the Javanese hegemony in Indonesian State affairs.
