Martinus Dwi Marianto July 1995 ABSTRACT Surrealist painting flourished in Yogyakarta around the middle of the 1980s to early 1990s. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. -

AL ALBAB - Borneo Journal of Religious Studies (BJRS) Volume 2 Number 2 December 2013 SOUTHEAST ASIA: HISTORY, MODERNITY, AND RELIGIOUS CHANGE Sumanto Al Qurtuby University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies Abstract Southeast Asia or Southeastern Asia, with more than six hundred million pop- ulations, is home to millions of Buddhists, Muslims, Confucians, Protestants, Catholics, and now Pentecostals, as well as many followers of local religions and spiritual beliefs. Notwithstanding its great historical, political, cultural legacies, however, the region has long been neglected as a site for religious studies in the Western academia. Aiming at filling the gap in Asian and religious studies as well as exploring the richness of Southeast Asian cultures, this article discusses the dynamics, diversity, and complexity of Southeast Asian societies in their re- sponse to the region’s richly political, cultural, and religious traditions spanning from pre-modern era to modern one. The article also examines the “integrative revolutions” that shaped and reshaped warfare, state organization and econom- ics of Southeast Asia, particularly in the pre-European colonial era. In addition, the work discusses the wave of Islamization, particularly since the nineteenth century, as well as the upsurge of religious resurgence that shift the nature of religiosity and the formation of religious groupings in the area. The advent of Islam, with some interventions of political regimes, had been an important cause for the decline of Hindu-Buddhist traditions in some areas of Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, the coming of Pentecostalism has challenged the well-estab- lished mainstream Protestantism and Catholicism, especially in Indonesia and the Philippines. -

70. The Gospel of John—8:12-24 “The Light of the World” Pt.3 (5/5/19) In our study in John’s gospel we are currently in chapter 8 where we came across one of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus that John built his gospel around. Every time Jesus called Himself “I AM”, He was declaring that He was the voice from the burning bush (Exodus 3:13-14) where God identified Himself to Moses as the great ‘I AM’. And so, as we study John 8, understand that the whole chapter is built around Jesus’ declaration of divinity—which led to a heated confrontation between Himself and His enemies. II. The Heated Confrontation—v.12-59 A. Round One—Light and Darkness (v.12–20) John 8:12 (NKJV) 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." And so, this very heated confrontation started with Jesus declaring Himself to be Yahweh (the great I AM) and Messiah—and ended with His enemies picking up stones to kill Him (v.59). The ‘them’ in verse 12 refers to the scribes and Pharisees (v.3)—the ‘scholars’ of Judaism. When Jesus called Himself “the light of the world”—it would have immediately reminded them that Yahweh was likened to ‘light’ in their Scriptures many times (Psalm 27:1; 84:11). 1 And so, when Jesus proclaimed, “I AM—the light of the world”—He was claiming to be the God of Israel—the radiant Shekinah Glory! It was the Shekinah Glory (presence of God in the form of a pillar of fire by night) that was the light that lit their ancestor’s way thru the darkness of the wilderness for those forty years before entering the Promised Land. -

PB Wacana Vol. 21 No. 1 (2020) Clara Brakel-PapenhuyzenWacana Vol., Masked 21 No. Panji 1 (2020): plays in 1-27 nineteenth-century Java 1 Masked Panji plays in nineteenth-century Java The story of Kuda Narawangsa Clara Brakel-Papenhuyzen ABSTRACT This article discusses the Javanese Panji-story Kuda Narawangsa, which I first watched as a masked performance in a village south of Yogyakarta in 1977. The play featured Galuh Candra Kirana, spouse of Prince Panji of Jenggala, in the masculine form of “Kuda Narawangsa”. Historical information on this play in archival manuscript sources, found mainly in the collections of Leiden University Libraries, proves that it was well-known in Java during the nineteenth century. In this article, descriptions of performances in manuscripts or printed publications are combined with historical play-scripts (pakem) from Surakarta and Yogyakarta, which have not been investigated so far. Special attention is paid to the script of a masked performance of the Kuda Narawangsa story in a manuscript from the Mangkunegaran palace, investigating what this historical pakem can tell us about the meaning and context of a masked performance of this story in nineteenth century Java. A Bloody Message after having received some criticism about it during the preview sessions. The actors still say the line in Aramaic, but there is no English. He is referring to this passage from Matthew 27:25: “Let his blood be on us and on our children.” 2 As an answer to the question of why the Jews have led such a wandering existence through the centuries and have been persecuted brutally, people, including Christians, sometimes quite “naturally” mention this phrase from Matthew 27. The Jews have invoked the curse upon themselves, haven’t they? Having thought about this text quite a bit since I saw the film, I can’t figure out why believing Christians have used a Bible verse to hurt other people. I would By Leendert van Beek have thought that Bible verses would be used, in the first place, to comfort people, not to persecute them. I’ve done some research on this text, and I would like to explain a specific reading of this notorious verse. -

Christianity, Islam, and Nationalism in Indonesia As the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia is marked by an extraordinary diversity of languages, traditions, cultures, and religions. Christianity, Islam, and Nationalism in Indonesia focuses on Dani Christians of West Papua, providing a social and ethnographic history of the most important indigenous population in the troubled province. Peace and Conflict Studies III Spring Semester 2013 Supervisor: Kristian Steiner Faculty of Culture and Society Department of Global Political Studies The Conflict in the Moluccas: Local Youths’ Perceptions Contrasted to Previous Research Martin Björkhagen Words: 16 434 Abstract The violent conflict in the Moluccas (1999-2002) has occasionally been portrayed in terms of animosities between Christians and Muslims. This study problematizes that statement by analysing several conflict drivers seen through two perspectives. The first purpose of this study was to contrast previous research regarding conflict factors in the Moluccas to the perceptions of the local youths’. There is a research gap regarding the youths’ experiences of the conflict, which this study aims to bridge. A second purpose was to analyse discrepancy between the academic literature and the youths’ bottom-up perspective. The final purpose was to apply the theory of collective guilt to explain and analyse the youths’ memories and perceptions regarding the conflict factors in the Moluccas. The qualitative case study approach was adopted since it could include both in-depth interviews and an assessed literature review. Six in-depth interviews were conducted in Indonesia which explored the youth’s perceptions. The critically assessed literature review was used to obtain data from secondary sources regarding the same conflict factors, as was explored by the interviews. The first part of the analysis exposed a discrepancy between the two perspectives regarding some of the conflict factors. The collective guilt analysis found that the youths only seem to experience a rather limited feeling of collective guilt. This is because all strategies to reduce collective guilt were represented in the youths’ perceptions. -
