AREA OF TANVALD JOSEFŮV DŮL Josefův Důl (Joseph’s Hollow) was founded in 1701 and Jedlový důl named after Josef, the son of the owner, Karel Josef Des- fourse. In the middle of a romantic gorge, a three-cascade waterfall named Jedlové was crea- ted. Along the waterbed, a trail is led from Hujerův Kout (Hujer Corner), under the Pekelné Skály (Hell Rock) and past Pekelná Tůně (Hell Pool). The Jedlová Rivulet was originally called Tann (Tann- wasser in German). Once it was called Kamenná Voda (Stony Water – maybe for the boulder and rocky bottom).

Today, the village is rather a recreational centre. The big- gest attraction is a single-aisle pseudo-Gothic Church of Transformation (built 1862-1865). Nearby, you can find a commemorative stone dedicated to a countryman named Gustav Leutelt (1869-1947), a writer and a headmaster of local school. His writings about the Jizera Mountains are full of love and understanding. There are eleven oaks along the road and – considering the local climate – they are really valuable. The name Špičák (Sharp Peak) is used for many mountains and hills throughout Bohemia and Mora- via, in the head with the tallest one, Špičák in the Šumava (1208 m). Our Špičák is referred to as the Špičák of Tanvald (not to be confused with another Špičák in the Jizera Mountains near Oldřichov). It rises above Albrechtice, being the fifth highest Špi- čák among the other namesakes. There is a legend about a giant who lives in a cave, guarding his treasu- res. The conspicuous mountain has always been at- tractive. As early as in 1889, a rock lookout was open. However, it became famous in 1909, at the occasion of start-up of an 18-meter-high stone lookout tower, named “Jubilee Outlook Tower of Francis Joseph I“. After a year, a restaurant was added. Rebuilt in 1930, Špičák Mountain has become a popular winter sports destination. There are excellent ski slopes and ski lifts on the northern side of the mountain.

Integrated in the village of Albrechtice is Mariánská Hora. Mariánská Hora Village of Mariánská Hora (Marian Mountain), now a rec- reational centre, was founded in 1701. It was named after the second wife of the landowner, Count Desfourse. The statue was deposited in a local chapel, and became a destination of many pilgrims. In 1994, the chapel was damaged and the statuette stolen, however, local parishioners provided a new one. The chapel was repaired, and re-consecrated in 1995. Another interesting place is the so-called Holy Steps between Mariánská Hora and Desná. In the steep slope, there are some 350 stone steps, built by forest workers who would walk down the town to work every morning. The legend says there used

The property owner in Navarov, following from a witness testimony, made a decision to let the village of Plavy ope- rate it, as in 1658 it was owned by a miller named Waclaw Haratický – so the mill is called after the miller, not after the village. TANVALD Tanvald and its parts Šumburk and Žďár stretch far up into the slopes above the valley, hemmed in by the Jize- ra Mountains. Tanvald was founded in the 16th century at the meeting point of two rivers, the Kamenice and Desná, originally inhabited by woodcutters. The name is originally German (Tanne = fir tree, Wald = wood). In 1895, Tanvald was declared a townlet, becoming a town in June 1905. At the beginning of the 20th century a new town hall and a district court were built as well as a new school (Masaryk School).

Church of St Francis of Assisi The church is situated in the middle of Šumburk. The founda- tion stone was laid in 1899, the church was consecrated on 15th August 1901 then. The name of St Francis of Assisi was given to the church in 1918. The church bells were confis- cated during the World War II. In 1993, two new bells were installed. The church has become a protected cultural monu- ment and a dominant of the growing town. Church of St Peter and Paul The rococo church, consecrated to St Paul and Peter, was erected in Upper Tanvald between 1787 and 1789. The baroque Chapel of St Ann, above the viaduct, dates from 1927.

Tanvald – Žďár (oldest settlement) In the old times, in the area covered with thick forest, the settlers used to found their little fields, after they had burnt and cleared the trees. In the second half of the 17th century, there were only little village houses scattered throughout the land. Around 1700, a settlement was formed, and in 1772 the village of Žďár (= burnt space in Czech) was given a permission to provide houses with numbers. Well preserved, original timbered cottages are used for recreation today.
