Luxembourg: Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, 2000 ISBN 92-828-4395-5 © European Communities, 2000 Printed in Belgium Printed on white chlorine-free paper Foreword With the fourth volume of Portrait of the Regions, Eurostat completed the regional analysis of the 15 countries that today constitute the European Union. However, the prospect and implications of the possible enlargement to some central European countries very soon became evident, implying the need to know the regions of these countries much more deeply. The fifth volume, published in 1997, covers the regions of Hungary. The series is now extended to Poland and the Czech Republic with the publication of the present vol- ume. To maintain a uniformity of presentation of the characteristics of the regions, the same structure as before has been used as far as possible and the regions are illustrated with maps, diagrams and statistical tables. The description includes comments on demography, economic conditions, the labour market, education, territory, resources, transport, environment and cooperation with border regions. Which regions have young populations? What is the weight of agriculture in the econ- omy? What is the level of unemployment? Which European regions have the same population density as the Polish region of Katowice? These are some of the questions that this new volume helps answer. This volume of Portrait of the Regions dedicated to Poland and the Czech Republic is the result of cooperation between Eurostat and the statistical offices of these coun- tries. Its development was coordinated by Ecos-Ouverture, a cooperation programme linking the regions and cities of eastern and western Europe. I would like to give a word of appreciation to all those from the Polish and Czech stat- istical offices, and from Eurostat, who contributed to this valuable work and made pos- sible its publication. Yves Franchet Director-General of Eurostat PORTRAIT OF THE REGIONS III eurostat This volume was produced with the collaboration of the Central Statistical Office of Poland, the Czech Statistical Office and coordinated by ECOS-Ouverture. C. Description of the Wałbrzych / Broumov area 1. Infrastructural and socio-economic settings The transboundary Wałbrzych / Broumov pilot area, being investigated during GeoPLASMA-CE project covers a total area of ca 1,245 km2, including Polish part - i.e. Wałbrzych area – of ca 767 km2 and Czech area of 478 km2 (Figure 1 A). The selection of such a range of the examined area resulted from the need to include the whole Wałbrzych district and the northern part of the Nachod district. For technical reasons, related with 3D modelling to be performed during the project, the research area is increased by special buffer zone, which enlarges the total area to 1,536 km2. Geographically, the main part of the Wałbrzych / Broumov area is located in Central Sudety Mts. This area is morphologically very differentiated and includes fragments of several mesoregions (Figure 1 B). Figure 1. A. Location of the Wałbrzych / Broumov pilot area on topographic map. B. Morphological map of the investigated area shown on Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Page 5 Due to generally mountaineous character, average heights of the Wałbrzych area vary from 300-400 m a.s.l. in the N and up to 800-940 m a.s.l. in the S (Kamienne Mts.). The main rivers flowing through the area are the Lesk, the Pełcznica, the Ścinawka, the Bystrzyca and the Zadrna. In terms of administrative division, the Wałbrzych area is located in the southern part of the Lower Silesian Voivodship and comprises territory of the Wałbrzych City (town with district rights) and a whole Wałbrzych district.

/ !"# 27 THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE POLISH AND UKRAINIAN BIESZCZADY MOUNTAINS DUE TO TOURISM AND OTHER FORMS OF HUMAN PRESSURE Agnieszka Œwigost Institute of Urban Development, Krakow, Poland Abstract The area of Bieszczady Mountains is the cross-border zone characterized by a great diversity in both policies and a level of economic development between the Polish and Ukrainian part of the region. Therefore, it exhibits a significant variation in the degree, form and character of anthropopres- sure. The main aim of the study is to compare the intensity of transformation of Polish and Ukrainian parts of Bieszczady Mountains and indicate the anthropogenic conditions existing in both countries. Four villages of Bieszczady were analysed – Solina and Wetlina in Poland and Sianki and Volosjanka in Ukraine. The study, conducted using the point scoring evaluation method, showed large variations in the degree of anthropopressure in different localities. The area that has the lowest level of human impact is Po³onina Wetliñska while the largest one occurs in Solina. Wetlina, Sianki and Volosjanka have a similar level of transformation. Research areas located in the Polish part of Bieszczady are exposed to environmental changes primarily related to the development of tourism. In Ukraine, the pressure is observable due to unregulated water and sewage systems, a large accumulation of possessions with a traditional heating and highly developed railway network. Keywords: anthropopressure; tourism; Polish Bieszczady Mountains; Ukrainian Bieszczady Mountains Introduction rently, research in the field of anthropopressure includes also Contemporary transformations of the natural environment the less visible transformation of the environment caused for are the consequences of not only natural alterations but also instance by tourism development.
