Public Walking Space a Study of Commercial Pedestrian Streets in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Nanjing Public Walking Space A study of Commercial Pedestrian Streets in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Nanjing Blekinge Institute of Technology Spatial Planning with an emphasis on Urban Design in China and Europe Author: Guan Wang Tutor:Gunnar Nyström Karlskrona, Sweden 2011 Abstract This diploma work is built up around the topic on public walking spaces, based on the investigation and analysis of commercial pedestrian streets of Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm in Sweden and Nanjing in China. It intends to compare the pros and cons of these commercial pedestrian streets and enhance each other by extracting their positive attributes to improve the current situation and public walking space design. This work is constructed as follows: Firstly, the background and problems of public space and public walking space are introduced, and then the history of the subject and its classification are elaborated. Secondly, the relative theories of urban public space and walking space were investigated to provide the theoretical and scientific support to this thesis. Besides, in the case studies, the commercial pedestrian streets in three cities are analyzed respectively, in terms of context, location, transport situation, human-scale design and culture expression. Furthermore, regarding to how people use the public waling space, the investigations and interviews of these three walking streets were carried out. People are classified according to their different activities, and at the same time, their various relative demands for the streetscape are analyzed. 15 people from each street were selected randomly in the interview to provide feedback on four types of questions: traffic, protection, comfort, and enjoyment, which are proposed according to the 12 urban life qualities criteria of Jan Gehl’s research. Their answers are gathered and referenced in the final design proposals. Finally, Hu’nan Road, the commercial street in Nanjing is renewed in the light of all the previous studies. Through the work of the overall planning, transportation planning, and streetscape design, the author tries to solve current problems in the public walking streets, and improve the unsatisfactory status in the public walking street.     ACTA UNIVERSITATIS STOCKHOLMIENSIS Stockholm Studies in Human Geography 18 Transaction Spaces Consumption Configurations and City Formation Lukas Smas Stockholm University Abstract Consumption forms and is formed by the city. How, when and where com- modities are transacted is essential in this urban drama of mutual relation- ships. This thesis explores how consumption and everyday life in cities are interrelated. The specific objective is to analyse how commodity transaction situations are configured and constrained in time and space, and, how con- sumer service spaces are formed in and are part of city formation. Transac- tions are conceptualised as economically and socially situated material pro- jects constituted by consumers, commodities and producers. Commodities and values are transferred and created through transaction spaces. The theo- retical perspective is framed around consumption and production of spaces, and particularly informed by Hägerstrand’s time-geographical thinking and Lefebvre’s work on urban space. Methodologically different examples of consumption projects and spaces are used to discuss configurations and for- mations for commodity transactions. The thesis stresses material and time-spatial constraints for commodity transaction and it discusses the blurring of boundaries between what conven- tionally has been separate social and economic activities and places. Chang- ing transaction configurations and the formation of consumer service spaces in the city are explored through analysis of different consumption places and commodities such as books, coffee and clothes and property development projects in Stockholm city centre. Transaction configurations display geo- graphical and historical continuities and changes as well as time-spatial flexibility and spatial fixity. Transactions spaces are continuously formed and reformed through processes embedded in the global cultural economy, urban development and politics, as well as through people’s everyday life.

Föredragande borgarrådet Annika Billström anför följande. I en motion av Michael Arthursson (c) föreslås att norra delen av Drottninggatan och Norrtullsgatan omvandlas till gågata. Därmed skapas ett stockholmsströg från Järntorget till Norrtull. Remissvar Inom staden har motionen remitterats till gatu- och fastighetsnämnden, stads- byggnadsnämnden samt skönhetsrådet för yttrande. Gatu- och fastighetsnämnden anser att det är lämpligt att omvandla Drott- ninggatan till gågata mellan ApelbergTatan och Tegnérgatan liksom fortsatt fram till Observatorielunden. Även den del av Norrtull%atan som går söder om Odenplan bör bli gågata. En fortsättning till Norrtull skall beaktas och prioriteras i samband med den trafik- och gatumiljöplanen som f n tas fram för Vasastaden. I trafik- och gatumiljöplanen behandlas hela Vasastadens gatusystem och förslag till gatumiljöförbättrande åtgärder i ett sammanhang. Stadsbyggnadsnämnden anser även den att det är lämpligt att omvandla Drottninggatan till gågata mellan Apelbergsgatan och Tegnérgatan. Frågan om en ytterligare förlängning av gågatan bör dock studeras i arbetet med den Utlåtande 1995:195 RIII 3939 områdesvisa trafik- och gatumiljöplanen samt i samband med uppföljningen av boken "Gatuvisioner". Rådet till skydd för Stockholms skönhet avstyrker motionen. Rådet ställer sig skeptisk till en alltför stor mängd gågator i innerstaden. En balans mellan tillgängligheten för både fotgängare och trafikanter bör eftersträvas. En gågata mellan Järntorget och Norrtull riskerar att ta bort livfullheten och pulsen i stadsbilden.

The field of public life studies observes the human activity of public spaces and presents principles that predicts human public behaviour to gain a better understanding for what elements of space people are attracted to. The human staying activity at two central public square in Stockholm – Kungsträdgården and Sergels Torg – was studied with the methodology of public life studies as outlined in Gehl & Svarre (2013) How to Study Public Life. A stationary activity mapping was performed for the two squares where female, male, sitting and standing activity was registered. The result show that Kungsträdgården attracts more than twice the staying activity as Sergels Torg, and that the two squares are mirror images of each other in terms of gender and activity proportions, with Kungsträdgården being predominately female and sitting and Sergels Torg male and standing. The principles, theories, previous observations and hypotheses from a selection of the most seminal works within the public life studies field frame the seven themes used to analyse the human stationary activity at the two squares; Sitting, Standing, Thermal Comfort, Psychological Comfort, Sensory Comfort, Aesthetics and Human Interaction.

Egil Törnqvist is professor emeritus in Scandinavian studies at the University of Amsterdam.
