Teresa Zeoli and Lee Ferreira did a great job with the Snack Table, and Teresa snapped these great photos. Corinne Rungo, who teaches group and private lessons at Dancers Co-op, taught a group class in Swing, and brought her students to entertain us in the show. Bob Waller was first, dancing a Rumba with Corinne. After a Corinne with Bob Waller costume change, Mike Hogan Corinne with Mike Hogan and Corinne performed a Swing. Another costume change, and then the Rungo Stars performed “The First Rumba”. Many thanks to all the performers and volunteers! Dancers Co-op is enjoying their new home at the Clearwater Garden Club, 405 Seminole St, Clearwater. Playing the show music from Corinne’s phone caused delays as the phone kept shutting off. We will ask that show music be brought on a flash drive or CD rather than a phone in the future. • Bringing Magic Into Interpretation
Education Bringing Magic Into Interpretation What is an Interpreter? William Penn Mott, Jr I am constantly being asked, "what is an inter Director, National preter?" To get a definition, I consulted the dic Park Service tionary which defines an interpreter as, "One that interprets." That's passing the buck. I then looked up the word interpret and found it defined as, "To explain or tell the meaning of; present in understandable terms." I can agree that an inter preter should be able to explain or tell the mean ing of the subject under discussion and do so in Interpretation understandable terms, but I expect a great deal more from our interpreters. First, they should be professionally trained, en thusiastic, creative, flexible, and be able to com municate to people at all age levels. Secondly, I believe that a good interpreter should become very knowledgeable about a particular sub ject around which he or she can create a unique program that is his or hers alone, and which reflects that person's personality. Thirdly, I want our interpreters to use whatever special talents they may possess in the field of music, drama, puppetry, magic, dance, etc., to en rich and create new and exciting interpretive programs. Interpretation has been, and must always be, the hallmark of the National Park Service. An interpreter can be an entertainer, but of greater importance is his or her ability to be an educator utilizing the captivating environment of a national park so as to stimulate interest in, and respect for, the wonders of nature and the interest ing and exciting heritage of this country.

  • The Queer of Color Sound Economy in Electronic Dance Music
The Queer of Color Sound Economy in Electronic Dance Music Blair Black Within electronic dance music cultures (EDMCs), musicality and experi- mentation have been indebted to black and Latinx DJs of color since its inception in the 1980s. Even today, queer DJs of color continue to push the envelope of experimental EDM by showcasing dance music from the “global south,” centering remix styles that border between hip hop and EDM, and sampling cultural references popular in queer communities of color. This article explores music’s complex entanglements with identity and community for queer people of color in underground electronic dance music scenes. To be specific, the individuals within these communities self-identify as racial/ethnic minorities on the genderqueer spectrum of non-normative gender and sexual identities (gay/lesbian, trans, non- binary, etc.). Moreover, I argue that these socio-economic positions act as an impetus of a sound economy – the shared system of socio-cultural aesthetics – for queer communities of color in EDM. The first section dis- cusses the identity politics that underlie this sound economy by tracing how intertextuality allows DJs to display these minoritarian1 perspectives. I then highlight why (re)centering racialized queer identities is radical by tracing EDM’s political shifts. Specifically, I highlight how narratives sur- rounding EDM changed due to the demographic turn in Europe during the 1990s. The last section explores the re-emergence of pivotal queer DJs of color and the scenes they founded in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York by focusing on the flows of culture and people between cities to point to a more extensive global network of racialized queer communities in constant musical and political dialogue.
