It is based for the most part on material furnished by the Historical Division, Department of the Army. Much valuable information has been obtained from the publications of the United States Stra tegic Bombing Survey and the Office of Naval Intelligence. How ever, in acknowledging indebtedness to others it is not desired to place on them the responsibility for any factual errors or for any conclusions drawn. This and other pamphlets on World War II are constantly being revised as additional information becomes available. Introduction 1 Introduction in a Recent Review of Guy Halsall's Warfare And
introduction 1 INTRODUCTION In a recent review of Guy Halsall’s Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West, 450-900, which is ostensibly meant to be a new standard in the field, Bryan Ward-Perkins approves of the author’s findings, summarizing of early medieval warfare that: It remains very difficult to imagine a seventh- or eighth-century army, except as a hairy and ill-equipped horde, or as a Beowulfian band of heroes, and almost impossible to envisage what such an army did when faced with an obstacle such as a walled town[.]1 Ward-Perkins is being willfully—not to say wonderfully—provocative. He is well aware of the substantial and growing body of scholarship on early medieval warfare that has rendered clichés of hairy barbarians obsolete.2 But quips aside, he highlights a serious gap in existing historiography. While many scholars recognize the similarity (and to varying extents con- tinuity) between Roman and high medieval siege warfare, this has never been demonstrated in any detail. Hence, a notable number of scholars favor a minimalist interpretation of warfare in which the siege is accorded little importance, especially in the West, arguing that post-Roman society lacked the necessary demographic, economic, organizational and even cultural prerequisites. Continuity of military institutions is unquestioned in the case of the East Roman, or Byzantine Empire, but Byzantine siege warfare has received only sporadic attention, and it has been even more marginal in explaining the Islamic expansion.3 This study seeks to examine the organization and practice of siege war- fare among the major successor states of the former Roman Empire: The 1 Ward-Perkins 2006, reviewing Halsall 2003. -

Data structure – Water The aim of this document is to provide a short and clear description of parameters (data items) that are to be reported in the data collection forms of the Global Monitoring Plan (GMP) data collection campaigns 2013–2014. The data itself should be reported by means of MS Excel sheets as suggested in the document UNEP/POPS/COP.6/INF/31, chapter 2.3, p. 22. Aggregated data can also be reported via on-line forms available in the GMP data warehouse (GMP DWH). Structure of the database and associated code lists are based on following documents, recommendations and expert opinions as adopted by the Stockholm Convention COP6 in 2013: · Guidance on the Global Monitoring Plan for Persistent Organic Pollutants UNEP/POPS/COP.6/INF/31 (version January 2013) · Conclusions of the Meeting of the Global Coordination Group and Regional Organization Groups for the Global Monitoring Plan for POPs, held in Geneva, 10–12 October 2012 · Conclusions of the Meeting of the expert group on data handling under the global monitoring plan for persistent organic pollutants, held in Brno, Czech Republic, 13-15 June 2012 The individual reported data component is inserted as: · free text or number (e.g. Site name, Monitoring programme, Value) · a defined item selected from a particular code list (e.g., Country, Chemical – group, Sampling). Montenegro: Berth of a nation Globe and Mail / Eric Reguly / August 1, 2008 Budva, Montenegro — Peter Munk and I are plunked in the library of the “Te Manu,” a spotless white floating palace built in Italy, owned by a Mexican, named after the Polynesian word for “bird” and chartered for the week by the chairman and acting CEO of Barrick Gold and his family. The yacht is anchored in Budva, a medieval town turned bustling resort on the coast of Montenegro, one of the breakaway republics of the shredded Yugoslavia. It has four levels, a crew of 11 and an interior clad with cherry and walnut panelling. At 49.4 metres (160 feet), it is one of the biggest and most expensive of its kind in the rarefied world of superyachts – generally defined as crewed pleasure boats of 30 metres or longer. This baby rents for $175,000 to $210,000 (U.S.) a week. On this hot summer day the Te Manu is more than a boat. It is also Mr. Munk's office. But the affairs of the world's biggest gold company are not on his mind. Porto Montenegro is. The table next to the library is strewn with notes, plans and diagrams for the superyacht marina and luxury resort that is the billionaire's newest and most glamorous project. He and his high-profile backers recently became Montenegro's biggest foreign investors, with their €260-million-plus ($405- million) plan to make Porto Montenegro the Mediterranean's, perhaps the world's, premier superyacht destination. Gold magnate Peter Munk and an A-list of global investors are pumping more than US$400-million into the Porto Montenegro project. -

Friday 27 November 1942 marked the nadir of French sea power in the twentieth century. Forewarned that German troops arrayed around the Mediterranean base of Toulon were intent on seizing the fleet at dawn, Admiral Jean de Laborde – Commander of the Force de Haute Mer, the High Seas Force – and the local Maritime Prefect, Vice Admiral André Marquis, ordered the immediate scuttling of all ships and submarines at their berths. Some 248,800 tons of capital ships, escorts, auxiliaries and submarines was scuttled as the Wehrmacht closed in on the dockyard.2 The French “Vichy navy” virtually ceased to exist that day. -

Yang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Market, Medicine, and Empire: Hoshi Pharmaceuticals in the Interwar Years Timothy M. Yang This dissertation examines the connections between global capitalism, modern medicine, and empire through a close study of Hoshi Pharmaceuticals during the interwar years. As one of the leading drug companies in East Asia at the time, Hoshi embodied Japan's imperial aspirations, rapid industrial development, and burgeoning consumer culture. The company attempted to control every part of its supply and distribution chain: it managed plantations in the mountains of Taiwan and Peru for growing coca and cinchona (the raw material for quinine) and contracted Turkish poppy farmers to supply raw opium for government-owned refineries in Taiwan. Hoshi also helped shape modern consumer culture in Japan and its colonies, and indeed, became an emblem for it. At its peak in the early 1920s, Hoshi had a network of chain stores across Asia that sold Hoshi-brand patent medicines, hygiene products, and household goods. In 1925, however, the company's fortunes turned for the worse when an opium trading violation raised suspicions of Hoshi as a front for the smuggling of narcotics through Manchuria and China. Although the company was a key supplier of medicines to Japan's military during World War Two, it could not financially recover from the fallout of the opium scandal. -

East India Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The English East India Company was an English and later (from 1707) East India Company British joint-stock company[1] formed for pursuing trade with the East Indies but which ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent. The East India Company traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpetre, tea and opium. The Company was granted a Royal Charter in 1600,[2] making it the oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies. Shares of the company were owned by wealthy merchants and aristocrats. The government owned no shares and had only indirect control. The Company eventually came to rule large areas of India Company flag after 1801 with its own private army, exercising military power and assuming Former type Public administrative functions.[3] Company rule in India effectively began in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and lasted until 1858 when, following the Industry International trade Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Government of India Act 1858 led to the Fate Dissolved British Crown assuming direct control of India in the new British Raj. Founded 1600 The Company was dissolved in 1874 as a result of the East India Stock Defunct June 1, 1874 Dividend Redemption Act passed one year earlier, as the Government of India Act had by then rendered it vestigal, powerless and obsolete. Its Headquarters London, England functions had been fully absorbed into official government machinery in the British Raj and its private army had been nationalized by the British Colonial India Crown. -

The Channel Dash April 26 On the night of February 11, 1942, two German battleships, the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen left anchor at Brest, France. This was be the beginning of the “Channel Dash” (Operation Thunderbolt-Cerberus) of February The Prinz Eugen 11-13 in which these three ships, despite pursuit by the British Royal Navy and Air Force (RAF), returned intact to Germany via the English Channel. The Dash was ordered by German leader Adolf Hitler—against the advice of his admirals, who believed his plan meant certain destruction for these ships. Yet Hitler expressed the following opinion: “The ships must leave port in daytime as we are dependent on the element of surprise…I don’t think the British capable of making and carrying out lightning decisions.” This time, Hitler was correct. How did the German ships end up in Brest, France? And why was it necessary for them to even make a Channel dash? Germany and Great Britain had been at war since 1939. By the summer of 1940, the seemingly unstoppable Germans had overrun much of the western portion of continental Europe. This included part of France, allowing them use of the port of Brest on the lower end of the English Channel for their surface ships and submarines. The Royal Navy attempted to blockade the Atlantic coast ports, but its resources were stretched thin. The British had been watching German vessels at Brest carefully. In fact, these three ships had been undergoing repairs there for much of 1941.
