De esta obra, tan poco conocida, no se ha hecho hasta ahora ningGn estudio que la analice en su to tali­ dad, quizas por la dificultad que representa el dar una explicacion logica y coherente a los incidentes extrarios y sobrenaturales que en ella se suceden. De aqu£ que se haya dicho que la obra es una "extranfsima comedia" y que algunas de sus acciones son el producto de la magia. Sin embargo, la obra es valiosa por presenter valores universales de piedad, caridad, amor y amistad a traves de un heroe que refleja y reafirma el idealismo, el patriotismo y la val£a personal en que se envolvieron los espafioles de la epoca de cadent e de Felipe III. As£, el propSsito de esta disertacion es hacer un analisis de la comedia para darle una explicacion coherente a su estructura y a aquellas acciones de las cuales se han hecho tales juicios nega- tivos. Se establecerS que en la obra hay una serie de pruebas, f £ s ic a s y espirituales, por las que tiene que pasar el protagonista para definirse como un personaje de muchas virtudes y ciertos defectos. TambiSn s e e sta b le c e r a que su comport ami en to e s t a determinado por el temperamento de su complexion: cuando predomine en el el tempera- mento melanc6lico practicarA la virtud, y cuando predomine en el el temperamento colerico se inclinara al vicio y tendra defectos. Asi, el protagonista es un personage inestable y cambiante que tanto puede inclinarse a una fe ciega y a una gran caridad como a reacciones colericas y estados depresivos generalmente infundados. Sus acciones extranas se deberan a su condicion humoral. Las otras acciones extranas, como la intervencion de lo sobrenatural y los milagros, se explicaran como preraios del cielo a las virtudes del protagonista, Ademas, se demostrarlL que lo que mueve y da cohesion a la extructura interna de la obra es el amor de amistad, el cual esta basado en la virtud. Por lo tanto, el tema central de la obra es el amor de amistad en aras de la lealtad y el sacrificio. INTRODUCCIOH Don Juan de Castro es una comedia de Lope de Vega escrita en dos partes para celebrar las aventuras caballerescas y amorosas de dos grandes amigos. La obra no ha sido estudiada todavia en su totalidad, y las pocas opiniones criticas que se han hecho de ella han sido negatives. Esto se debe a que los crfticos han considerado y juzgado solamente algunas acciones aparentemente extranas que son las que m£s Hainan la atenci6n al lector coirriin, y no han relacionado estas acciones con la estructura general de la obra. Para entender la comedia tenemos que tener en cuenta dos puntos de vista. Uno esta constituido por las acciones del piano real y otro por las acciones del piano sobrenatural. Estos dos puntos de vista se corresponden en lineas generales con dos leyendas diferentes que hay en la comedia y que Lope de Vega va a desarrollar juntamente. Una es la de "los dos amigos" y otra la de "el muerto agradecido". Los criticos han considerado solamente las acciones del piano sobrenatural, que son tres: las apariciones del muerto, laresurreccifin de dos ninos y la cura milagrosa del leproso. Tomando estas acciones, por aislado, han dicho que son un producto de la magia, y que por lo tanto la obra es una extranfsima comedia. Estas opiniones negatives se deben a que se ha visto en la obra solamente la forma externa de estas acciones y no se ha penetrado 1 2 en su significado. Wo se ha encontrado la funci 6 n que desempenan esas acciones en la comedia porque ni se ha relacionado el piano sobrenatural con el real ni se ha tenido en cuenta que una cosa son las acciones y otra es el tema de la obra. Poco importa que las acciones sean extraflas e inverosfmiles si ellas tienen una funci 6 n realista. Come dice Alexander Parker The action is what the incidents of the plot are in themselves; the theme is what these incidents mean [...] The relation of theme to action has nothing whatever to do with the degree of verisim ilitude in the latter, but depends entirely upon analogy. The plot of the play is merely an invented situation. [...] it does not matter in the least if the plot of the play is untrue to life in the sense of being untrue to normal experi­ ence, provided its theme is true to human nature. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

    “We Still Have to Dance and Sing” An Interview with Richard Foreman Richard Schechner Richard Foreman is an incessant author and highly focused director. Since 1992, at St. Mark’s Church on 2nd Avenue in Manhattan, Foreman has directed 11 of his own plays. The most recent, Maria del Bosco, opened on 27 December 2001. Over the years, with his Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, founded in 1968, Foreman has directed more than 50 of his own plays—and there are more plays still unproduced. Foreman also has frequently directed the works of others. Among my favorite Foreman productions are Brecht’s Threepenny Opera at Lin- coln Center in 1976, Moliere’s Don Juan at the Guthrie Theatre in 1982, and Suzan-Lori Parks’s Venus at the Public Theatre in New York in 1996. Foreman has often been in the pages of TDR, starting with his “Ontologic-Hysteric Man- ifesto II” in 1974 (18:3, T63) up to the program notes for Pearls for Pigs in 1998 (42:2, T158). Foreman’s plays have been collected in a number of books, from Plays and Manifestos (New York University Press, 1976) to the most recent, Par- adise Hotel and Other Plays (Overlook Press, 2001). SCHECHNER: I want to focus on post–September 11th. Your play, Now That Communism Is Dead My Life Feels Empty [2001], was to some degree about en- tering a new historic era. Summary Don Juan is a unique approach to the already popular legend of the philandering womanizer immortalized in literary and operatic works. Byron’s Don Juan, the name comically anglicized to rhyme with “new one” and “true one,” is a passive character, in many ways a victim of predatory women, and more of a picaresque hero in his unwitting roguishness. Not only is he not the seductive, ruthless Don Juan of legend, he is also not a Byronic hero. That role falls more to the narrator of the comic epic, the two characters being more clearly distinguished than in Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. In Beppo: A Venetian Story, Byron discovered the appropriateness of ottava rima to his own particular style and literary needs. This Italian stanzaic form had been exploited in the burlesque tales of Luigi Pulci, Francesco Berni, and Giovanni Battista Casti, but it was John Hookham Frere’s (1817-1818) that revealed to Byron the seriocomic potential for this flexible form in the satirical piece he was planning. The colloquial, conversational style of ottava rima worked well with both the narrative line of Byron’s mock epic and the serious digressions in which Byron rails against tyranny, hypocrisy, cant, sexual repression, and literary mercenaries.

Goehring In a project, like The Don Giovanni Moment, that deals with the reception history of a canonical work, several kinds of questions can vie for attention. The volume's subtitle highlights a general interest in a historical question: the "legacy" it chooses to explore is largely one presented in nineteenth­ century imaginative and, to a lesser extent, philosophical works. (The main exception is Ingrid Rowland's discussion of religious ritual and the Don Juan legend before Mozart, "Don Giovanni: 'And what communion hath light with darkness?"') For some essays, the topic of history yields to one of criticism. Despite the introduction's contention that it attends less to Don Giovanni itself than to "the works written in the opera's shadow" (xvii), many contributors keep at least one eye fixed on the object casting that shadow. Finally, parts of the volume pose more abstract questions, where the issue becomes "how far this opera as a work of embodied myth redefines the relationship between art and morality" (xvii). This kind of question, not quite historiographical or analytical, seeks out "main themes;' which in this case comprise "power, seduction, [and] judgment" (xvii). An inclination to philosophize (or to interpret philosophy as that discipline involved with abstract themes) informs the collection at various levels. The first half of its title, for example, pays homage to Kierkegaard's famous interpretation, advanced in Either/Or ([ 1843] 1987), that describes Mozart's libertine not as an ethical being but as the musical embodiment of the sensuous; Don Giovanni's choice (or impulse) to follow the path of pleasure instead of virtue is reflected in an existence made up of a series of discrete moments.

Express, wrapping up with three concerts at the New Victoria Theatre in London, England. The final concert at the New Victoria was videotaped and an edited version was broadcast on the BBC television program The Old Grey Whistle Test in November of 1974. Larry Carlton and Joe Sample were playing with The Crusaders at the time and both opted not to go on the road with Joni and the L.A. Express. Guitarist Robben Ford replaced Larry Carlton and Larry Nash filled in for Joe Sample on piano. In a 2011 interview for JoniMitchell.com, Max Bennett said that although the pay was good for this tour, the musicians could have made more money playing gigs in L.A. and doing session work in the recording studios. Max said that the musicians loved the music, however, and that they were treated royally in every way throughout the tour. Excellent food, first class accommodations, limousines, private buses and private planes were all provided for the band’s comfort. Max also made a point of mentioning the quality of the audiences that attended the concerts. Attention was focused on the performances so completely that practically complete silence reigned in the theaters and auditoriums until after the last note of any given song was performed.
