2 Editorial: Fires in Lawshall - please keep your eyes open Recently a habitat pile (heap of sticks/twigs) in Golden Wood was set on fire - fortunately it was discovered and extinguished before it could cause any damage. A garment was also set on fire atop the new gate. A notice was partially burned in the Glebe bus shelter. Many thanks to those who have stopped more damage by putting out the fires.

Fires in the woods are dangerous. There was a recent opportunity to learn fire lighting and safety to which no one came. No fires should be lit in any woods unless properly managed and supervised by someone with training, the only times fires are ever lit in Golden Wood are for specific events and by people with specific training and permission and they are closely watched.

We want young people to enjoy the woodlands and have the freedom to roam in them, please ensure they understand the foolhardiness and dangers of any adventures with fire.

Please help to keep our village safe by keeping an eye out as you go about the village for any signs of fires and extinguishing them (if safe to do so).

There are no Parish Notices this month – double the pleasure next month.

Thank you to the people who reported their sightings of turtle doves, especially those who also sent photos- very professional! It looks like we are just about holding on to a small breeding population of three pairs around the village this year. This is down from, I think, five pairs last year so things don't appear too promising for the future. I am convinced that the problem does not lie here, it is more likely that land development in their African homelands and having to face the uncontrolled shooting over Malta is to blame for the turtle dove’s rapid decline.

More happily though, there seem to be more whitethroats and lesser whitethroats around various parts of the village this year. Also, the greenfinches appear to be making a bit of a recovery after their fight with a disease of the respiratory system.

At home, the starlings have done remarkably well- and they're still producing more young, so we will have noisy feeding times for a while yet. The numbers of house martins in the air around us has steadily increased since the latter part of May (the low numbers earlier was getting a bit of a worry but I hope to see lots of young martins leaving the nest soon).

We saw a hobby over Golden Wood early in June, quite high in the sky and seemingly just enjoying the beautiful day rather than looking for food or a mate.

Hobby, Falco Subbuteo

LAWSHALL WI We had an excellent turn out for June's Lawshall WI meeting.

Speaking was Neil Cobbett an Engineer currently developing research instruments that can measure the atmosphere just outside the Earth where you find satellites. He works with other scientists in the Antarctic (which is a word derived from Greek meaning 'without polar bears') for many months of the year.

A unique part of the world, Neil described what it was like to work in such a beautiful but challenging place. He showed us what his ration box looked like from when they go out on their research trips, we got dressed up in his polar gear which keeps out the harsh wind and cold of the Antarctic (we were trying on the clothes in one of the hottest evenings of this year, we were sweating! Sorry Neil). And Neil gave a very insightful talk all about the amazing movable living and working quarters his colleagues work in. It was an amazing talk enjoyed by all.

Next month (July 13th) our President, Patricia Burton-Hopkins, is going to give a talk on her experiences working at Culford school with her little Terrier Max. I think Max and the kids got up to a lot of fun!

We also have lined up in August, ( Weds 10th) a talk and demonstration on stage Combat. So come along and bring a friend 'if you think your 'ard enough'!

The WI meetings are now well established and take place every second Wednesday of the month. We are always looking for new members who want to meet fellow villagers, learn something new, fundraise and have a laugh. If you want to try us out, please do; your first attendance will be for free! We are not all about Jam and Jerusalem you know! Promise!

See you next time, Ruth Harman, Lawshall WI Secretary Contact Ruth on: Tel: 01284 830530 or mobile: 07960 922 947

Lawshall Lions Under 14 Boys Football Team

ONLY two games played since the last report due to the weather and Easter. Framlingham provided stiff opposition as they chase the league title. After taking the lead Lawshall conceded just before half time to make it 1-1. Straight after the break Framlingham went ahead and before long it was 3-1. With heads dropping and a couple of unfortunate errors the final score was 5-1. Having conceded 5 the week before no one was expecting to get absolutely hammered by the other league contenders Witnesham Wasps. They certainly attacked with a sting, Lawshall suffering their worst defeat as an eleven-a-side team; 11-0.With 3 games remaining Lawshall play Witnesham and Hadleigh at home and Woodbridge away. Nigel Schofield.

Lawshall Girls Under 15 Football Team

THE girls have only played two games in April which were both in the league. In the game against Kesgrave Lawshall could not score in the first half, hitting the post three times and at half time the score was 0-0. Early in the second half Sophie Jeffery scored then soon after Ashley Pink got the second and went on to get a hat trick. Emily Fisher got number five with a taken goal making the final score 5-0. The second game was in Ipswich against Coplestonians and they put on a very good team effort to win 19-0. The club is holding finals day at Cockfield Great Green on the 28th April, there will be six games starting at 11.30am U10,U11 U13, U16 and a ladies final. The girls play there in the Suffolk U15 final on 1st May in Cockfield V Brandon with a 6.30pm KICK OFF. Please come and the support them. Ian Copping. A Forest for Our Children

Summer’s here and it’s been a busy time in Golden Wood. Our BBQ was a big success! Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed the yummy food and drink, took part in our woodland activities like t-shirt printing and willow weaving and had a good run around in the woods!

We were also lucky to have a beautiful afternoon for the Friends of FOC Walk. Grenville Clarke shared his extensive knowledge of the trees & the history of Golden Wood. Did you know the Wild Service Tree is also known as the Chequers? Its fruit taste like dates & can be made into alcohol. Perhaps this is to linked to the common pub name The Chequers? It’s not known which came first though, the name or the fruit.

The walk was followed by a picnic tea, with delicious homemade cakes provided by Wendy Harris. Come along to our next Sunday Woodland Morning and you can sample them too! Meet on Sunday 31st July at 9.30 at The Foundry on Bury Road. Finish at 12.30, or stay for as long or as little as you like. This month we’ll be clearing the rides and dealing with the ragwort on the Hauswin meadow and mound. All with the aid of yummy cakes and hot drinks!

Our club continues to attract a healthy number of members each week and the varied programme makes each session great fun, and there is always plenty of chatter going on.

Our last trip to Bressingham was a very successful occasion. We started with morning coffee at Elveden and followed this with a meal in the Wyevale Garden Centre at Bressingham.

Then into Bressingham for rides on the two magnificent steam trains.

It was a lovely sunny day which made the trip through the gardens even more enjoyable. To see our eighty and ninety year old members enjoying themselves on the carousel was a picture that will long remain in our memories.

Our next trip is to the Norfolk Railway.

Thanks again to Julian for arranging these trips and driving the mini bus.

On July 5th we are having a second visit from David Padwick who will be singing songs from the sixties interspersed by the news events from that decade. Again, no doubt, many fond memories will be recalled. Our meeting on this day will commence at 1pm with a buffet so why not come along and join us, we are always happy to see new faces. John Payne

19 Coach Trip to Bletchley Park

On Thursday May 19th I was invited to join a coach leaving Lawshall Village Hall at 8.15 am to visit Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire. What a wonderful day out organised by John Payne.

As I was on my own a lady asked if she could join me, on introduction we were both " Wendys " and enjoyed each others company. We had coffee and on to the toilets which I thought a bit basic until I realised we were in an original block. Bletchley Mansion, a beautiful building of mixed architectures was acquired in1938 for the wartime headquarters of the Code and Cypher School being set in large grounds in a very rural setting. We had a bewildering look around the Visitors centre and then picked up our multimedia guide which I didn't find very helpful as I didn't know where to go first or what to see.

We walked across the lawns and past the beautiful lake complete with a pair of swans giving a very serene atmosphere, towards the mansion. We didn't look around here, just saw a very beautiful stained glass roof in one room. We spoke to a guide and he suggested we went on a guided tour starting from the chauffeurs hut. This proved to be an excellent idea as our guide took us around the area telling us about the personal who worked there. There were over a thousand workers on site ,all billeted out so many cycle sheds about the area .Civilians and service personal worked together each decoding a small section of message before it was passed on to the next so no one ever knew a full message or if it had any importance in changing the path of the war.

One civilian was enlisted, as she said her interest were solving cryptic crosswords!!. During World War Two cyphers and codes were decrypted from several AXSIS Countries , those most important were the ones generated by the German Enigma and Lopenz machines. The Enigma machines were like typewriters and very portable .They were run off 6 volt batteries and were used in all U-boats Six thousand messages were de coded every day.

21 Code Breakers at Bletchley Park on Thursday 19th May

As there were 4 places spare on the coach a contingent from were pleased to able to join Lawshall to their trip to Bletchley Park. With everyone on board promptly by 8.15am the coach was on the road almost immediately. We had a good journey and arrived at Bletchley Park ‘Checkpoint Charlie` style barrier, where we were immediately refused entry until our allowed slot! The ‘secret agent` from the Bletchley Park complex boarded the coach and made herself known to us, providing our (annual, unlimited entry) tickets and ‘special` entry instructions, namely to head to Block ‘C’ where coffee, hot chocolate and Danish pastries were to be purchased. We were also warned to be at the pick-up point by 3.30pm!

We left the reception area (through some period railway carriage doors, giving the illusions that were arriving at Bletchley Park from Bletchley Station during wartime. At one point in its history, Bletchley housed some 9000 personnel. It makes you wonder how Bletchley remained secret for so long.

We made our way immediately after leaving Block ‘C’ to Block ‘A’ where we were greeted by a fresh agent who explained and demonstrated the working and use of “The Bombe” (aka The Colossus) - a massive machine with numerous rotors which systematically searched for the three character codes used within the Enigma device. We were even privileged to have the cover unlocked on a real Enigma machine and to press some keys to understand how it worked. Although we were only shown one Bombe, there were once banks of them operated by Wrens in Hut 8 and 11.

It transpires that Enigma machines were actually in common usage by bankers and solicitors before the war, and the Polish had already been working on breaking the codes before the Germans invaded their country, and the British became involved. The daily codes were often decrypted thanks to the regular opening characters routinely incorporated within weather-ship broadcasts. Interestingly, it is little known that all three of the German Services used their own encryption codes, so each had to be broken independently every day. 22 The morning passed swiftly as there was so much to see and so many Huts to view, so we decided to make our way to Hut 4 for lunch, where a replicated wartime menuThe was morning available passed - theswiftly chunky as there vegetable was so muchand beef to see stew and being so many the Huts to favourite option, view, sowhich we decidedwas extremely to make tasty.our way Thankfully to Hut 4 for we lunch, were where not give a replicatedn the small wartimewartime ration! menu was available - the chunky vegetable and beef stew being the We had plannedfavourite to visitoption, the which National was Museumextremely oftasty. ‘From the Archives’ July 2016

I have just filed the photos from the BFP of the recent Scarecrow Festival along with the previous three events going back to 2007. As I was going through the village events file I came across this very poor quality photo from 1937. A scene from The Street as the village celebrates the Coronation of George VI and Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 12th May. The account in the Mail describes many problems on the day and the very wet weather probably didn’t help! The coronation was shown on TV; the world’s first major outside broadcast and there were events for the whole of the month of May. I hope there will be lots of photos of this June’s celebrations for the Queen’s Birthday,

“ There was a wonder as Papa was crowned” - what Princess Elizabeth, 11, thought of her father’s chaotic Coronation. She saw the Archbishop of Canterbury fumbling with the crown, George not at all sure if it had been put on the right way and he had to reprimand one of the bishops who stood on his robes!

It will grow at a different rate, depending upon rainfall and sunshine – and the weather in general. That growth needs to be managed sensibly. Locally, the verges adjacent to roads and visibility splays at junctions in rural areas are cut by Suffolk Highways, in accordance with a predefined schedule. The cutting heads on the tractors that are used cut to a standard 1.2metre width and this ‘single swathe cut’ adjacent to main carriageways is carried out on all of the roads on that schedule. In addition, visibility splays at junctions are generally cut back to a distance of 3m from the give way or stop lines, although this may be extended in some cases due to the geometry of the junction’s layout. All grass is cut to a length of 75mm.

When will the grass be cut in my area? : Suffolk Highways will cut verges adjacent to the A-road and B-road network twice during the grass growing season. The first cut will begin on May 2nd and will take around two weeks to complete. The second cut will begin on 11th July and will take a further two weeks to complete. The verges on C-roads and unclassified roads will receive a single cut beginning on 6th June and will take around six weeks to complete.

How will the grass be cut? Suffolk Highways will use seven tractors working throughout May, June and July to complete the cutting programme on time. The tractors carry the Suffolk Highways livery plus high visibility markings and beacons. Operatives are fully trained and competent in the use of the machinery, and the requirements of traffic management whilst on the network.

Where can I find out when the grass in my area will be cut? See the county council’s website at www.suffolk.gov.uk/grasscutting

Weed Spraying: As gardeners everywhere know, weeds take the very slightest opportunity to grow anywhere. So, if there is any organic material in the channel of a road, decayed leaves between kerbs or pockets of soil in cracks in a footway, weeds will grow there!

When will the weeds be treated in my area? Weed treatments are based upon two visits during the spring/summer season. An additional treatment may sometimes be necessary. Suffolk Highways’ weed spraying programme started on Monday 18th April. See website at www.suffolk.gov.uk/weed-control

How are the weeds treated? Weeds are treated by applying a low pressure herbicide spray with a hand-held lance. Where possible, operatives will use a small all-terrain vehicle (quad bike) operated at a speed not exceeding 5 km/h. Footways and areas of restricted access will be treated on foot.

30 Rhodes – Greece

On the 25th May I travelled to Rhodes from Stansted. Many people are not travelling to Greece for fear of being bombarded by immigrants. We did not see one. I am a great lover of Greece and its people and they want you to visit their beautiful islands and we should.

We stayed at a 4 star All Inclusive in Kolymbia, which was a fantastic property. Sunconnect Kolymbia Star has brilliant internet connection; which for many is a must nowadays. It was a very short walk from the beach which was in a lovely bay, offering boat trips to the resort of Lindos and beyond. We took the local bus to Lindos to spend the day there. Lindos is a stunning Greek village busy in the day with tourists visiting to see the acropolis at the top of the resort. You can walk to this or take the local taxi ( a donkey ) at only 5 Euros each one way it was definitely an experience not to miss. The views from the top are breath taking and as you look down onto Lindos you can choose from one of the many rooftop bars, restaurants to sip a local drink and overlook the beach and bay. We did not make it down to the beach but it did look wonderful and inviting. There are many shops, bars, café’s, restaurants all spilling into the little winding streets of the main town. We stopped to look around the church in the centre (men and women alike have to ‘cover up’ to enter) Lindos is one of my favourite places ever.

Another day we took the bus to Rhodes town. Again the old town has an array of little streets inside the walled old city with shops and bars offering everything you will ever need. We climbed an old clock tower to get panoramic views of this amazing town ( entrance included a drink) – you can also walk through what would have been the moat of this wonderful place. The harbour here is also very beautiful with many day trips, fishing boats, cruise ships and very expensive boats docked. Other places of interest include the butterfly valley, the medieval town of Manraki and the ancient cities of Kamiros and Ialysos.

My partner and friends also had a go at fishing from the local harbour. Not too lucky though. The people are warm and friendly and no one makes a salad like the Greeks There are some great late deals for this year so try out Greece. For more information please call 01284 771287 or e mail [email protected] We would love to book your dream holiday.

You could hold a HumaniTea party in your home with your closest friends, at work with your colleagues, within a residential home, or even at a club or society you are part of.

Simply start by deciding you are going to hold your event and who to invite. On the day just make sure you have enough tea, coffee and scrumptious treats to keep everybody full and happy. And don’t forget to ask your guests to kindly make a donation to join in the fun.

A good cause Every week, Red Cross staff and volunteers visit hundreds of people in the UK who have recently been discharged from hospital. They help them regain their confidence to live independently once again. The everyday tasks they carry out from making cups of tea to collecting prescriptions may seem small- but they carry enormous significance for the people they’re helping. The money you raise from your HumaniTea will help us to continue to supporting people in ways just like this.

Time for tea You’ll find everything you need to make your tea party a success in our HumaniTea fundraising pack. To request your pack, visit: www.redcross.org.uk/Humanitea or call your local fundraiser on 0300 456 1005.
