2 Editorial: as the final snowdrops fade and the daffodils seem to have continued for ages the sun begins to illuminate the trees and hedges with amazing colours where they are starting to thicken with leaf buds, spring is truly on its way.

This issue contains advance information on the South Show on May 8th, Scarecrow Festival in Lawshall at the end of May, a disco you can go to and the preparations to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on 12th June – lots of events coming up as well as some regular activities in the village hall.

Some of our regulars are missing this month – I expect that pre-school, school and youth club are all busy preparing for the holidays. Many thanks to Doreen for the piece on life lessons from a Jigsaw puzzle.

If there is something you would like to see included or you know someone who might talk to me about a topic of interest please let me know. Best wishes to you all. Jenna

6 LAWSHALL VILLAGE HALL – open for you www.lawshallvillagehall.co.uk

Have you visited our redesigned website? You can still download a copy of R&A. It is regularly updated with the latest issue, often before the paper copy is out, the photos are in colour ! and you can follow at least some of the links.

Easter is fast approaching and 2016 moves quickly forward. Lawshall is a lovely place to be in spring and summer, so let’s get ready for a great year ahead. Jobs to be done include getting the garden ready for those lazy days and barbecues, tidying up the outside of our houses and, of course, the unavoidable spring cleaning inside.

At your village hall, we are doing the same. The inside will be re-painted in places and kept clean as always. The outside is to receive some attention also. We are hoping to introduce some planting of flowers, shrubs etc. to brighten up the outside and make the hall look all that more appealing. Use of the hall has improved of late with successful starts to the Pilates and WI meetings and with other activities still to come. However, we still need assistance to help run the hall and to assist in its’ improvement as an asset to Lawshall.

The management committee are holding their AGM on 18th April at 7.30pm and we would love you to come along and offer your suggestions as to how we can improve our village hall. We also still need new committee members who can come to a meeting just once a month and have a say in the running of the hall. We definitely need a secretary to assist with the taking of the minutes each month. So please come along to the AGM and give your support to our team.

Finally, we are hoping to generate a sub-committee whose sole task would be to organise the social side of running the hall. Some people to help organise social events, whether they be dances, bingo, guest entertainers, summer fayres or Christmas parties. Maybe there is somebody out there with experience in this field who can assist us. Have a lovely Easter break and hopefully we will see you at the AGM on 18th April 2016. David Henderson, Chairman VHMC

10 LOVE YOUR VILLAGE – HELP PLAN ITS FUTURE

Lawshall Neighbourhood Plan

A big thank you to everyone who filled in the questionnaire! The data is being analysed as we speak. Look out for the results in future issues of Round & About and on our website and Facebook page.

Here are a few of the other things we’ve been up to:  A drop-in for 15-25 year olds. We chatted about young people’s experiences of life in Lawshall & what the Neighbourhood Plan can do for them.  A storytelling afternoon at All Saints School. Claire Osbourne & Ric Edelman entertained Lime Class with stories about Lawshall past, present & future.  Lime Class also went on a walkabout around the village. Here are some of the pupils with the maps they made, marked with the things they love now & their ideas for the future. We’re really pleased to have a child’s eye view of Lawshall to include in our Plan.

Bird Notes April 2016 by Cliff Cooper

Hopefully, by the time you read these notes (written in the third week of March), the weather should have warmed a little and the North-east wind will have changed direction to something more conducive to migration for our summer visitors. Look out for your first chiffchaff, wheatear, or even an early swallow.

I actually heard a chiffchaff a couple of weeks ago (around 1st of March) , but it was just calling and giving a very quiet bit of sub-song; this very early date and lack of proper song indicates to me that this would be a European bird that has spent the winter here and will soon be going back across the North sea, possibly to Germany. More birds seem to be coming here for the winter rather than making the very long journey to Africa. Another sign of global warming?

Our garden birds have done very well this winter due to the lack of hard frosts and the fact that they are well fed every day. Wendy is out filling feeders first thing each morning – I have to wait or get my own breakfast! We regularly have 40 house sparrows to feed and the starlings are usually sitting on the rooftops waiting for the feeders to be filled. We have several dunnocks alongside our resident robin and wren. A recent addition to our regular visitors has been a small flock of long-tailed tits- what I assume to be the same pair comes onto the suet pieces feeder every day and sometimes they bring their pals along. Again I think that this is because they know they can rely on getting food here.

Local news : A red kite, sometimes two, regularly seen over farmland to the south of the village. This is becoming a more common sight these days as they extend their range.

A friend in Lawshall was fortunate enough to see a peregrine falcon take a pigeon out of the air over his garden! These spectacular birds breed under the Orwell bridge.

We started with David Padwick joining us for our bi-monthly buffet afternoon. David is a professional singer/keyboard player and sang songs from the 50's and reminded us all of many events that occurred during that decade. (See photograph) It is hoped that David will return later in the year with songs from the sixties.

We have also had a visit from Sue Calver, a long time friend of the club, who took us for chair side activities once again. A visit from Lawshall's own Ron Reimann then rounded our month off, with songs and keyboard playing. We have a lot of talent in the village which sadly remains hidden!!!

No less than 19 members went on our monthly outing, this time to a smallholding in Bures where we had tea, coffee and a variety of cakes. We were treated to a very interesting talk by the owners and saw the livestock on the smallholding. It was delightful to see a number of very young kids including twin girls just a week old. After leaving the farm we all drove to Capel St Mary where we had a wonderful lunch and visited a garden centre. Though a cold day, we kept ourselves warm with much humour.

Our next outing is a visit to Langham Glass on 15th April, where we will have lunch and no doubt a coffee stop on route. Also on April 26th we will be holding our next buffet Tuesday and have a visit from Linda Scoles. Linda is well known in East Anglia for her lively and humorous presentations and we are very fortunate to have been able to book her. Linda comes highly recommended with the comment 'She was the best laugh we've had in years'.

If you are not a club member and would like to join us, then please contact me. You will be most welcome. Buffet and entertainment will be just £5 for non members but we need to know numbers attending. Of course if you want to join in all of the activities then please join us on Tuesday afternoons in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm. We currently have 26 members. John Payne

Life lessons from a Jigsaw Puzzle Don’t force a fit. If something is meant to be, it will come together naturally. When things aren’t going so well - take a break. Everything will look different when you return.

Be sure to look at the big picture. Getting hung up on the little pieces only leads to frustration. Perseverance pays off. Every important puzzle went together bit by bit, piece by piece.

When the spot stops working, move to another but be sure to come back later. The creator of the puzzle gave you the picture as a guide book. Variety is the spice of life. It’s the different colours and patterns that make the puzzle interesting.

Establish the border first. Boundaries give a sense of security and order. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations. Some matches are surprising. Take time to celebrate your successes (even the little ones). Anything worth doing takes time and effort. The Great Puzzle cannot be rushed.

30 ‘From the Archives’ April 2016

I had one very welcome response to my request for information about the village last month. There were some lovely family memories and photographs. This will be shared in the months to come. Over the past few weeks I am sure there has been a lot of discussion behind closed doors about housing in the village. The Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire will have got many people thinking about what they would like for the village in the future. The value of the Archives documents and photos is to see the many changes to the village and also records the houses we have lost. The heading for this article in the Bury Free Press in 1987 was ‘Protest grows over cottage demolition plan’. I hope we don’t loose any more old houses in the next phase of building. I will keep you guessing until next month as to where this was!

After several years of giving facts and figures, the format for 2016 will be more readable and offered in Quarterly Reviews covering periods of weather within each month. It was felt that in order to keep the data interesting, now was the time to make some slight changes.

Copy dates for the magazine mean that normally a cut-off point has been made around the middle of each month to coincide with production and printing. So that readings can be taken as actual calendar months, from now on the quarterly reviews will appear as follows:

January – March will be in the May edition. April – June will be in the August edition. July – September will be in the November edition. October – December will be in the February 2017 edition.

Hopefully you will enjoy the change which should show quite clearly a pattern emerging as the year goes by.
