2 Editorial: the Autumn Equinox has arrived and we begin to prepare our gardens for winter. Maybe you will have a moment to peruse this magazine and find something interesting inside. Maybe you have a few minutes to jot down some notes about something you have seen in the village or done on your travels this summer to further enhance these pages over the coming seasons. The Lottery winners for September and October will be published together.

I have included a registration form for Police Connect – a messaging service to keep villagers informed on and you can also sign up online. I hope you enjoy this edition of R&A. Jenna

6 LAWSHALL VILLAGE HALL – open for you www.lawshallvillagehall.co.uk

have you seen the redesigned website? You can still download a copy of R&A. It is regularly updated with the latest issue, often before the paper copy is out, the photos are in colour ! and you can follow at least some of the links.

So autumn is upon us already. Wherever did the summer go? They promised us a hot summer but it was a rather damp one, and now they say we will have a cold winter. Who knows? One thing that I can guarantee is that, whatever the weather, your village hall is available for you for a variety of uses.

Let us know what you want from your hall. Clubs, events, meetings venue, absolutely anything will be considered. Perhaps you would like to hold a party without all the upheaval at home. Children’s parties, anniversaries etc. The hall is a great venue for such events and villagers get the hall at a reduced price.

If you haven’t visited the hall in a while or perhaps even never visited, come along to one of our meetings or contact ant committee members to arrange a tour of the facilities. You will be impressed at the standard and facilities available at a very low price.

As chairman, my intention is to make the hall accessible and attractive to all people in the village and whatever age group you are from. My number is in the R&A publication. Give me a call and help us to keep our village hall up and running for years to come.

We are also looking for somebody to take up the role of secretary on the management committee. If you can spare a short time each month, why not come along and assist us in keeping this great village asset up and running successfully. Just call me on the number listed in this edition of the R&A.

Take care and be happy. Dave Henderson (chairman)

A.E.D. update: It was decided at the P.C. meeting on the 8th September 2015 to order an AED with an alarm and this particular model also needs an electricity supply. The cost is £1500 including VAT. Cllr Laura Williams has agreed that the AED can be erected at the Swan Pub. The P.C. will make up any shortfall in the donations already received. If you want to make any donation you can do so at The Glebe Stores or at The Swan.

Neighbourhood Plans: The Steering Group has considered the various options for these plans and it was decided at the meeting that the best option is to go for the full Neighbourhood Plan. The members of the Steering Group will be available to view on the P.C.'s website. Costings for this plan were produced also funding available. These were accepted by the P.C. and the Steering Group will now take the next step which will be a questionnaire delivered to all households in the village in the near future.

S106 update: Costings have been obtained for the items for Walcher's Meadow, including one item of play equipment, picnic table with bench, benches, trees and shrubs, bulbs, notice board etc. and these were accepted by the Councillors. Advice will be taken on the best types of trees suitable for this location. The quotation for the permanent path was also discussed and it was decided to accept this quotation.

Crime Report: On 25th August 2015 a distraction burglary took place in Lawshall. If you have any information on this crime please contact the police on 101. PC Lucy Rout Crime No. SU/15/2049.

Message from the Police: Please be alert after bogus officer scam. On Monday 7th September 2015 a couple were conned into handing £5000 to a man posing as an officer. The lady was told that there had been a fraud on their bank account and that people had been arrested. He then told her to go to their bank and withdraw cash and this would be collected. She was instructed to not hang up the phone and the man gave her numbers to call to confirm his identity. She called these numbers, not realising that the line was still open and she was still talking to those involved in the scam. A man arrived at their home in Ipswich and took the cash. Officers are urging residents never to hand over cash or cards to callers in similar circumstances. So please be extremely cautious when dealing with unknown callers. Police and bank staff will NEVER ask you to hand over money or bank cards to a courier, taxi driver or any other party. The Police will never ask you for any personal information. The Police suggest that should you ever receive one these calls, go to a neighbour or friend's house and call the police on 101 immediately. Dorothy Griggs - Parish Clerk 01284 830813

18 10 A Plan for Our Village

Your village needs YOU! Hello from Lawshall’s new Neighbourhood Plan Team. Following the Parish Council’s request for volunteers, there are now 12 of us on the team, including 2 Parish Councillors – Andy Irish and Laura Williams. We’re all ages and come from all over the village. At September’s meeting, the Parish Council voted to go ahead with a Neighbourhood Plan, which will look at the future of Lawshall, including:

 Housing – the Plan can have a big say in the kind of housing that might be built and who needs it the most, though it can’t stop development  Public services and amenities  Village environment

We will be building on the excellent Village Appraisal that was made a few years ago. Once in place, our Neighbourhood Plan will have statutory influence on development decisions concerning the village.

We’ll be working on behalf of the Parish Council and representing the whole village. It’s important the Plan reflects everyone’s views so we’ll be getting in touch a lot and look forward to hearing your opinions and suggestions. The first big event will be a public meeting on Saturday 21st November. We’ll let you know more details in next month’s edition and we’ll also be putting fliers through everyone’s doors and posters up round the village. Please do come along, have a cuppa and tell us your hopes and concerns about the future of the village. In the meantime, if you would like to know more or to volunteer, please contact Dorothy Griggs, Parish Council Clerk

Bird Notes - October 2015 by Cliff Cooper

The breeding season has come to an end again and many of our visitors have already left us to return to their winter homes. I am never really sure where the migratory birds would call home as many of them spend roughly half of their time in each place.

There are still some house martins and swallows around making the most of the insects driven into the air by the tractors pulling either ploughs or seed drills, but even they will very soon be gone.

Whilst taking a well-earned rest from my vacuuming duties at home recently, I looked out of the window and saw a hobby chasing the young house martins over the nearby houses. It must have been a young bird because it was not really getting at all close to catching them- it will have to learn quickly if it is to survive.

My only other bird of note locally was a female whinchat which we found sitting on top of the hedge one late September morning. This bird again would just be passing through our neighbourhood on its way to warmer places.

The garden bird numbers have started to increase again as the older birds have finished their work for this year and are introducing their offspring to the free food supply at our house! It seems that our house sparrows and starlings have done very well this year; the robin and dunnock are also living here and sharing the spoils with blue, great and coal tit.

I also received a welcome report from Bury road that a pair of turtle doves had returned there towards the end of breeding time- perhaps there is hope that they might return again next year and we can witness their breeding in the village. Below is a female Winchat :...... the males are more striking:

Tuesday Club

It is not too late for you to join us in the Village Hall on Tuesday 6th October at 2p.m. to hear Gill Nicholls sing songs from the Old Time Music Hall days. Gill has a variety of costumes and I am sure that we are in for a good afternoon. We will be having a buffet at 1pm but if you want to join us for this please telephone me before the date. There will be a small charge for non- members.

At the time of writing I am about to leave for my holiday break but I can say that our September outing will be to the war bunker at Kelvedon Hatch, Ongar followed by lunch at a local inn. As I write the outing is fully subscribed.

Last month we welcomed more new members and this is very encouraging. We have a varied programme each week with plenty of time for getting to know each other over tea and coffee. If you are 60 or over, you are very welcome to join us on Tuesday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm. We all look forward to meeting you. John Payne

Well Done Drivers! – Letter from a resident

I just wanted to write a letter to Round & About in appreciation of Lawshall's car and van drivers.

As a horse rider in the village I am often on our small rural roads at early times of day (always in hi viz) and have been grateful and pleasantly surprised by the consistent good will of the drivers in the area. I know it is rare for people to praise the beleaguered car driver, and hence why I felt it necessary to put fingers to keyboard.

Horses are flight creatures and even with the best will in the world the ancient instincts can kick in, but everyone who I have come across (bar one, but we'll gloss over that) this summer has been patient and slowed down for us until we have safely passed. I do always try and say thank you, raise a hand, or even just nod my head if not entirely safe to take a hand off the reins, but in case any of these gestures have not been registered I just wanted to put it into writing how appreciative I am.

As a car driver as well as a horse rider I am fully aware of how irritating it can be to come across slow moving animals, bikes etc when you are on a narrow road and in a hurry, and just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has made our hacking out this summer a pleasant experience.

The view from above! Juliet

A Forest for Our Children

Golden Wood Grand Coppicing

At this season we have one of the most important activities of the year in Golden Wood, we cut down a lot of trees! Outrageous I hear you cry, call yourselves conservationists?! What's the point of planting all those trees if you're just going to cut them down again?

Well, coppicing is a very ancient way of managing woodland that is beneficial to people and to wildlife. In fact humans didn't really invent coppicing, the trees that coppice well in Britain evolved side by side with the animals that 'invented' coppicing - Elephants!

Now there are very few wild elephants in the UK we have to do the work for them and it's hugely beneficial for many animal species.

So why not join us in Golden Wood, starting from The Foundry on Bury Rd for our Grand Coppicing day on October 25th - 9:30 until about 12:30 and you can learn how to do it, and why we do it. You'll even be rewarded with hot soup - as if the conservation, fresh air & good company wasn't reward enough!

Or I suppose we could keep an Elephant in the wood......

If you really can't wait to get started there's also a midweek work group, same place, same time on October 1st.

Look forward to seeing you there soon!

Inspire Challenge Succeed

This has been a busy summer with the building work at school to provide two new classrooms for Years 5 and 6 children. All works were completed on time and on 4th September we reopened school to our 140 pupils, which includes our first set of Year 5 pupils. This is an exciting development for our school and by September 2016 we will be a full primary school, taking pupils until they are 11 years old.

The new classrooms are bright and airy spaces in which to teach and learn and the children have given their seal of approval! We will hold an opening event in the Spring Term so that everyone from the school and local community can come along to see how All Saints’ has grown and changed and it will be a great opportunity for you to see our creative and innovative approach to learning.

Within our school grounds our Eco Club have spent time developing our wildlife garden by clearing the pond, setting up animal habitats, sowing wild flowers and carrying out surveys of the plants and trees within it.

Our organic fruit and vegetable garden continues to thrive with the help of our green fingered parents who run weekly gardening sessions for our pupils. Our annual harvest event this term will involve harvesting produce in order to create a range of delicious dishes to be shared at a whole school foodie celebration, following the harvest festival in church.

We have now started a new after school club, Woodpeckers, which now runs until 6pm each day. Children attending this club can participate in sports activities, crafts and games. This provision runs alongside our other after school clubs, which include Zumba, guitar, recorder, art, football, dodge ball and multi sports club. We have also joined the Chelsea Football Academy, who will start a new school football team this term, which will participate in the schools league each weekend.

30 Let’s Cruise !

I have just returned from a weekend away on the Royal Caribbean Quantum Class ship ‘ Anthem of the Sea’s’ . A 3 night trip from Southampton gave me a real taste of this fantastic ship. Well where do I start. The cabins are very spacious and beds comfortable and all very well appointed.

So what makes this bigger and better than the rest? Well on this ship you can FLY yes they have a sky-diving simulator on board which I had a go on and was just amazing. They also have the ‘North Star’ a jewel-shaped capsule which ascends over 90 metres above sea level giving just wonderful views. They also have ‘Two70’ a one-of-a-kind room which fuses together technology and entertainment. Then there is ‘Seaplex’ which is the largest indoor active space at sea which transforms from a sports hall to a roller disco to the world’s first-ever dodgem cars at sea ! They also have a climbing wall and the Flow Rider – the surf simulator – which is available on other ships as well.

We choose Dynamic Dining, as our eating option. This gave us no set dining times, no assigned seats, no required formal nights and the option to dine at many different restaurants ( some with a service charge, including Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver ) You could dress up and eat at the Grande restaurant and make that your formal night which we did the night of the Captains cocktail party in the Royal Promenade.

In the Royal Promenade you can find a café serving speciality coffee’s, shop’s and Michael’s Genuine Pub. The Music Hall played great music and stayed open till the early hours for a drink and dance.

We watched an excellent show ‘We Will Rock You’ – Queen’s smash hit musical. It was absolutely brilliant and left me wanting more. There is also a massive casino ‘Casino Royale’

Also to mention the Bionic Bar – where you choose your own cocktail ingredients and a ROBOT made them for you, just amazing. You could then name it and it would remember it for next time. Wonderful.

The pool area was awesome with a massive TV screen showing football etc, there was also an adult only area ( under cover ) with jacuzzi’s, water features.

I did not experience the children’s facilities but saw a X Box Room, Teen bar, lounge and understand the kids programme is brilliant. All in all the only thing wrong was I was not on there long enough !!

If you have any questions or queries call any of the experienced staff on 0844 335 7133 or call in today and see any of my staff at Thomas Cook , Bury St Edmunds ( next to Starbucks)
