Editorial: what strange weather we are having—one day bright and sunny, the next grey and drizzly. There is a maroon coloured hollyhock just outside my north facing front door which is in flower and still opening buds—very odd. May I thank all of the contributors to the magazine this year — I am hearing that people are enjoying the magazine. May I also thank those who advertise with us—supporting the magazine in the village hall in that way. If you do use the please tell them where you saw the adverts as without their support the magazine would not exist. May I also thank all of those who keep our village going - I won’t list them as I wouldn't want to miss anyone out! Most, but not all, are listed at the back. Do let me know if there is anything you would like included in the maga- zine next this year. We keep being advised of snow to come—so far it has not reached us. Stay warm and try to not let the pressures of this winter season get to you. Maybe we can get out and enjoy a little sunshine when it appears. Very best wishes for 2019. Jenna, Editor

You can view or download a copy of R&A from the website. Chairman’s Report I would like to end 2018 and welcome in 2019 by offering a big thank you to all those who made the effort to attend the concert and the quiz at the village hall. The concert was wonderful with the pop up choir and the amaz- ing voice of Gina Silburn entertaining us all. The quiz was excellently put together and delivered by Sara and John Warboys and raised around £100 for the hall. However, it is sad that so many in this village failed to support these events that were designed to help keep the village hall open and to offer entertainment to the residents of Lawshall. I was told a story by one of our committee who was speaking to a neighbour about the concert. The neighbour said they didn’t even know it was happening. When advised that it had been advertised in the village magazine and on posters around the village and that pamphlets had been put through every door, the neighbour simply replied “I don’t read those”. Sadly, I feel that our village is be- coming a dormitory village where residents are happy just to lock themselves away in their homes, oblivious to the needs of the community and the opportuni- ties available to play an active part in village life. We have already lost our village shop through lack of support. How long before the village hall and the village pub are also lost? So let’s look at the New Year and make a conscious effort to support the village we live in and help it to thrive by simply attending local events and using the village pub. Finally, another big thank you to all the committee members at the village hall who have worked tirelessly to keep things running, especially Karen Wilcox who has been a massive support in the running of the Christmas events and to Jenna Kitchen for her hard work in producing the village magazine. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year. David Henderson

What a wonderful evening's entertainment we enjoyed at the 'Evening of Seasonal Lights and Music' at the Village Hall on Friday 30th November. From the switching on of the lights and carols around the tree to the Preston St Mary Pop Up Choir, beauti- fully led by Lyn Davis, then being treated to the fantastic voice of Gina Cristallino, it was a joy- ful few hours for us. We were also provided with refreshments by the W.I which were very wel- come. A big 'thank you' to the Committee and all other helpers who made this such a great success.

Bird Notes January 2019 By Cliff Cooper As those of you who know me will already be aware, I am usually up and about fairly early in the mornings to take my dogs out. On one such morning shortly before Christmas I was leaving the house just as the sky was getting light in the east. As I looked up I could make out a bird flying slowly along the road, about ten feet high. When it was al- most level with me it veered towards me and the dogs, then it acceler- ated and shot over my head and up over the house. It was a tawny owl; it must have been pretty desperate for some food to be looking along the street for signs of movement.

That was the start of an interesting day for me because later on in the day I was in the car travelling to Bury when I narrowly avoided running over a stoat that shot across the road right in front of me. It stopped on the verge and looked at me as if to say “That was close!”

That same night I came home late, and passed through Hawstead at about 11pm. As I passed the village hall there, I noticed a barn owl drifting across the green, again in search of a meal. Two owl species in a day without even trying- can’t be bad.

Those three instances in the same day just go to show the non-stop battle that our wildlife goes through every single day in the hunt for enough food simply to survive. How do you tell a stoat from a weasel? One is weasely identified and the other is stoatally different! Oh well. Tawny owl

Tuesday Club

What a great Christmas Party we had with Steve and Frank. Thank you again to all those who contributed in any way to make it such an enjoyable afternoon. £100 was raised to donate to their charity—St Nicholas Hospice

As I prepare this we look forward to our Christmas meal at The Swan and I have no doubt that this will also be a very successful and fun afternoon. Now we look forward to another year, indeed they do come round so quickly now. We re-commence following the Christmas period on January 8th at 2pm in the Village Hall. We have a very varied programme planned and all of our spring and summer outings have been arranged. We are ready to go. Additionally I have arranged for some visitors to come and talk with us. For example on February 5th we will be entertaining the Pearly King of Southwark, Gerry Baxter, with his great brand of humour and interesting talk about the history of the Pearly Kings. This is really one not to be missed. So if you have thought about joining us, why not come along and sample one of our club afternoons, you will be made most wel- come. John Payne

Lawshall Garden Club

As January arrives and we look back at the chaos that was Christmas, it’s time to sit back and take stock. Although there are still jobs to be done in the gar- den, January is the time to think about how the garden performed in 2018 and what we would like from our gardens this New Year. While your garden is down to its’ bare bones, go outside and look at what can be done. Perhaps re-designing a border or even planning a new one. Plan out your vegetable beds Look at shrubs that weren’t happy and decide whether to get rid of them or simply move them elsewhere. If you choose the former, then think about swapping plants with friends and neighbours or just giving them away as opposed to putting them in your brown bin. Do I want to plant a tree or build a pond? These are all questions we should be asking ourselves this month and planning for. Draw a simple diagram of your visions for the New Year. You don’t need to be an artist just as long as you understand what your plan depicts. Seek advice from other gardeners or come along to one of the Lawshall Garden club meetings. The next issue of this magazine will contain dates and plans for future meetings. In the meantime, it is time to do a few odd jobs. Clean and oil the metal parts of your garden tools and sharpen blades. Get your mowers serviced and give them a good clean. Treat and repair fences and gates and tidy those sheds. Cover vegetable beds in black polythene if you want to sow early seeds and keep your ponds from freezing over to protect the wildlife within. January is also the month to prune wisteria and old shrubs. Cut back over- grown deciduous hedges and overgrown climbers such as ivy and Virginia creeper. Even climbing hydrangeas can be pruned back this month. All in all, this is the month to plan for a busy gardening year and to dream of the garden you would love to create. Anything is possible, whatever size gar- den you have. All you need is the desire and the energy to get out there, do it and enjoy it. If you are struggling with keeping on top of the gardening, ask friends and neighbours to help or come and ask us at the garden club. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year and I hope to see more of you at our garden club. David Henderson 07783 076332

Lawshall WI Hello from your Lawshall WI.

In December, Lawshall WI entered a competition to decorate a Christmas tree in All Saints Church, Lawshall. Every item was made by one of our mem- bers. On Wednesday, 12th October 2018, some Lawshall WI members spent the day being creative with silk, making scarves, greeting cards using stencils and crafting their own designs:

On the same day, they enjoyed a festive Christmas meal at The Swan, Lawshall!

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 9th January at 7.30pm, Lawshall Village Hall, where members will be voting in a new President and learning about The Guildhall, .

See our website www.thewi.org.uk/Lawshall to see what we get up to!

An Evening of Songs and Music We spent a very pleasant few hours in Lawshall Village Hall for the evening of Seasonal Lights and Music on Friday 30th November, lis- tening to a wide range of music in a lovely festive atmosphere. There must have been about 40 people there, enjoying the occasion with tea and mince pies.

The Preston St Mary Pop up Choir set the scene for the first part of the evening with festive and other songs in a fun medley which en- compassed the world. These well rehearsed and jolly singers, with their excellent conductor, Lyn Cook, were followed by solo artist Gina Cristallino who had an amazing voice! She sang a wide range of dif- ferent songs, with her small daughter for one song, and thoroughly entertained her audience. If you were not there, you missed a real musical treat in our village. Hope these singers all return for round 2 next December!
