LAWSHALL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN 2016 – 2036 Character Assessment Autumn 2017 Youth Club Collage of Lawshall buildings – unveiled at 1st Community Consultation Nov 2015 Lawshall Parish Council Loving our village – past, present, future! 1 LAWSHALL CHARACTER ASSESSMENT 2016 HOW WE WENT ABOUT IT Our Character Assessment of Lawshall is based on the guidelines offered by Planning Aid England and aims to provide a qualitative and visual counterbalance to the factual data gathered through the village Questionnaire and our two major Community Consultations (Nov ’15 and July ’16). We began with a Village Walk on 15th May 2016. For this we used a pro forma template encompassing 10 physical aspects of the parish and which we adapted, to make it more Lawshall-friendly. 26 walkers were asked to fill in the templates, assess the best views and enhance their findings with photos. The walkers met up afterwards to compare notes and discuss the best way forward to develop the Assessment. A smaller core group met several times over the next few months to identify the main character areas of the village, the best way to describe them, and the most effective use of maps and photos. We hope the result gives the reader an evocative ‘feel’ of Lawshall and a clear indication of what our residents most value. We offer our thanks to our Babergh Liaison, Rachel Hogger, who provided invaluable support throughout the process. PARISH OVERVIEW Lawshall is a working Suffolk village with a total population of 968 (2011 Census). It lies 8 miles equidistant from Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury, and is accessed by winding lanes and the A134 which passes within a mile or so of the main village street.

The main aims of the Brief are to: achieve a residential scheme that is of an appropriate good quality design, maximising the development potential of the site; whilst respecting the existing site characteristics; to properly integrate the development into the village. create a sense of place, whilst at the same time, make a positive contribution in enhancing the character of the locality and Great Whelnetham as a whole. The Brief has been amended to take into account the decisions of St. Edmunsbury Borough Council to not adopt the previous draft Brief following the meetings of the Council’s Sustainable Development Working Party and Cabinet on 28th January and 24th February 2015 and advice from the Council’s Officers. The proposed site is located close to the centre of Great Whelnetham, straddling the settlement boundary and Conservation Area. The site is partly developed. It has been allocated for residential development by St Edmundsbury Borough Council within the Rural Vision 2031. Policy RV 20 (a) of the Vision confirms that Land at Erskine Lodge provides for the site to be developed with affordable and market homes with the dwelling capacity to be confirmed by a development brief.

  • Cycle Ride V3.Pdf
A Cycle Ride Around Hawstead (Updated from an article in the Hawstead Journal a few years ago) It’s time to get your bicycle out and go for a gentle spin around the Suffolk lanes. The benefit of the suggested route here is that you get to visit lots of pubs – but you’ll need to check opening times if your thirst is going to be safely quenched! Start at the Village Hall car park on the Green and head south towards Lawshall, soon turning right along Whepstead Road by the post box. Keep going uphill past village houses and on the flat at the top turn right along Straight Road and through Mickey Green to the B1066. Now this cycle ride hardly touches A or B roads and here you’ve just a few hundred yards before you turn left and zoom down the hill. There’s a sharp right-hand turn at the bottom so keep your hands on the brakes: turn left at the junction and you’ll have The White Horse in sight. Continuing on the same road, the land undulates and after another 2.4 miles the next village, Rede is reached. Visiting The Plough means a slight detour involving a right and then left turn, but it’s only a few hundred yards – and it’s a lovely building so go and have a look even if you’re not imbibing. Then it’s only 2 further miles to reach Hawkeden, but take care! The plateau land continues for a while, but then there’s a hilly bit as we descend quite steeply to the valley of one of the River Glem’s tributaries.
