2 Editorial: As we have just passed the equinox the weather is certainly cooler than last week – the hottest September night on record I heard.

One Lawshall resident found two dyson hoovers and a discarded tyre on the verge of the road from to the A134. Dorothy Griggs has kindly reported these to Baberth District Council, who hopefully will remove them. It is so sad that our village is subject to this kind of fly tipping. Many thanks for all those who have picked up litter and kept Lawshall looking good.

I have included more detail on the changes to bus services and the implications for free bus pass holders (p15) I hope this is clear now. Many thanks to Wendy Harris for pursuing the bus pass issues.

The Lawshall Trust describe themselves on page 20 and an application form is on page 21. Please do apply if you need a little financial help, it is totally confidential. Have a wonderful month, Jenna

Magazine at Risk We need to find somebody to cover the advertising contained within the magazine, upon which it relies in order to survive. There is a lot involved but it could prove great fun for someone with an interest or experience in producing such a publication. Sadly, the RA magazine will disappear without somebody stepping in to take control of the advertisements.

On a brighter front, the Thursday evening circuit training has made a great start with Martin running great sessions for people of all ages, sizes and abilities. Why not come along and give it a try at 7pm every Thursday. Your first session is free and only £5 per session after that. It really is fun with a lot of laughter and everybody helping each other round the circuits.

Finally, we still need some volunteers for the Village Hall Management Committee. Please come and help if you can. We have a new secretary and the promise of a new treasurer so it’s just committee members needed at the moment. Keep well and carry on enjoying our lovely village.

Bird Notes October 2016 by Cliff Cooper

The birds seem to be enjoying the mid-September heatwave even if some of us are getting tired of it now! There are still quite a few house martins and swallows out over the cut fields, making the most of this late bonanza before they drift off South for the winter.

The good weather later in the summer this year will have helped many birds to raise a second brood (or even to replace a brood lost earlier in the Spring). I watched a woodpigeon bringing in sticks to start making a nest on 14th September! People say that these birds are capable of breeding throughout the whole year provided the weather isn’t too harsh- no wonder there seems to be so many of them everywhere.

Woodpigeons and collared doves using feeding stations and water bowls in our gardens could be one of the causes of the infection that has decimated the greenfinch population in this country as they are known carriers of the disease. Please ensure that you keep your feeders and water supply as clean as possible to give the smaller birds a better chance of avoiding this problematic disease. Having said that, however, I must add that our greenfinch population in Lawshall seems to be improving- I regularly hear their unmistakeable call around the fields as well as in our garden.

Another bird taking advantage of the fine weather this month to come and visit us was an osprey. This fish-eating bird, probably a young bird from this season, visited a stretch of water on private land locally on several occasions and I was lucky to be asked to have a look at the same time as the bird put in an appearance, albeit briefly.( if I still kept my tick lists this would have been a new one for Lawshall, though I have seen ospreys in Scotland and Rutland water).

Lawshall Lions Under 14 Boys Football Team

ONLY two games played since the last report due to the weather and Easter. Framlingham provided stiff opposition as they chase the league title. After taking the lead Lawshall conceded just before half time to make it 1-1. Straight after the break Framlingham went ahead and before long it was 3-1. With heads dropping and a couple of unfortunate errors the final score was 5-1. Having conceded 5 the week before no one was expecting to get absolutely hammered by the other league contenders Witnesham Wasps. They certainly attacked with a sting, Lawshall suffering their worst defeat as an eleven-a-side team; 11-0.With 3 games remaining Lawshall play Witnesham and Hadleigh at home and Woodbridge away. Nigel Schofield.

Lawshall Girls Under 15 Football Team

THE girls have only played two games in April which were both in the league. In the game against Kesgrave Lawshall could not score in the first half, hitting the post three times and at half time the score was 0-0. Early in the second half Sophie Jeffery scored then soon after Ashley Pink got the second and went on to get a hat trick. Emily Fisher got number five with a taken goal making the final score 5-0. The second game was in Ipswich against Coplestonians and they put on a very good team effort to win 19-0. The club is holding finals day at Cockfield Great Green on the 28th April, there will be six games starting at 11.30am U10,U11 U13, U16 and a ladies final. The girls play there in the Suffolk U15 final on 1st May in Cockfield V Brandon with a 6.30pm KICK OFF. Please come and the support them. Ian Copping. Your Village Hall Needs You

In May 2016 the Lawshall Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire results showed that the majority of respondents consider the Village Hall a valuable asset.

The five members of the Village Hall Committee are struggling. Currently working very hard to keep the hall open, they are all having to multi-task and are all currently under great pressure.

What is needed

1. A secretary - currently covered by our magazine editor 2. An Advertisement Administrator for the magazine currently covered by our treasurer who will resign this undertaking on 31st December. 3. Lottery money collectors 4. Three or Four persons to run a social committee to plan future events

Additionally, our treasurer has given notice that he is unable to continue in that role beyond the next Annual General meeting in 2017. He has stated his willingness to re-consider if these posts are filled by then.

Currently the Village Hall is in a reasonable financial position and it would be a tragedy if the hall is closed. This will happen because we will be in breach of Charity Commission rules if we have no volunteers.

It is entirely up to you, our villagers.

Are you willing to help? Please let one of our committee members know as soon as possible or attend our next meeting on Monday 12th September at 7.30p.m. in the Village Hall.

19 The Lawshall Trust

It was many years ago when two residents of Lawshall decided to start a charity in the village with the aim of helping villagers in need. This was in the 17th century – a long time ago.

Through their dedication the charity steadily grew. The Charity Commisioners for England and Wales ordered the scheme be approved and established.

The Lawshall Trust is still there today for those persons who need help. Over the years there have been many who have needed a helping hand, young people and the elderly.

Also any organisation in the village can ask for assistance, as long as it is village based.

Whatever help is needed, everything is confidential.

A lot of residents do not know about the Trust, but we are not a secret society! We help who we can.

At present there are four Trust Members:

Jean Clements, Diana Clark, Andrew Irish and Brian Adams.

We are without a Rector, who is always Chairman of the Trust and hope that in the near future that place will be filled.

If you want to apply for funds please use the form printed opposite.

LAWSHALL WI

September 2016

This month we had another enjoyable meeting. Ginny Knox gave us a demonstration of the Otago exercises that she teaches every Tuesday morning in Lawshall Village Hall. Otago exercises were developed at Otago University in New Zealand to help with strength and balance, and to reduce accidents and falls in the home. The exercises are done on or around a chair, and mostly involve small controlled movements. The meeting ended with the obligatory tea and chat, combined with some delicious home made cake (thank you Diane!).

Next month's speaker will be Rosemarie Jacobs, talking about her work making corsets for women who have undergone mastectomies. Please join us at 7.30pm on Wednesday September 12th in the Village Hall.

For more information have a look at our website www.thewi.org.uk/lawshall or our Facebook page www.facebook.com/lawshallWI

Caring for All Saints

The time has come, once again, at this time of year, when we thank the many helpers who have kept our church inside and out with great care.

The Parochial Church Council and indeed anyone who visits All Saints see that our church is lovingly kept. Fir five months – May to September our team of ladies, clean, dust and sweep. This is really appreciated by everyone who visits or worships here. We extend a sincere Thank You to you all.

We must not forget the brass cleaners, for the time spent polishing, it is not the easiest of jobs, but lovingly done – another Thank You to them.

We also thankfully have a group of men who keep our churchyard in pristine condition; it is well kept and tended with care. We thank them all. We know as a church we are fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

There is one other to say thank you to : Ian Carrington who helps with extra outside jobs at All Saints, especially the hedges, which at certain times of year need a lot of attention. Ian’s always available to lend a helping hand. We are grateful to him. And indeed everyone who helps in many ways.

A big THANK YOU to all.

Diana Clark, for All Saints Church

Suffolk Churches Bike Ride Took place on 10th September 2016 Thank you to Rosie and Pippa Walters and to Daniel Marshall for taking part in this annual event.

26 ‘From the Archives’ October 2016

Many of you are probably aware of the Dutch pilot who died when his Mustang plane crashed on Bury Road in the 2nd WW. There is a memorial stone on Bury Road near Hills Farm and a memorial in All Saints’ Church. There is no memorial at Lawshall Green to the three Polish airmen who were flying out of Chedburgh airfield. The crash on 23rd August 1946 has always been attributed to pilot error, but the newspaper report of the time with eyewitness statements from Sybil Ransom, Ernie Hill and Stan Armstrong may indicate that something was wrong with the plane. Ernie said that he heard the plane ‘spluttering and banging and saw the engine alight’. Sybil Ransom, a land girl who lived at Lawshall Green, said she was working in a pea field and thought the plane was coming straight for her, flying very low. She jumped into a ditch, but then the plane turned and dived to the ground only 100 yards from her. I have had an enquiry from a man who is researching the history of the 304 Squadron and this Halifax Bomber PP232 was the last plane they lost. He is trying to contact the family members and he has written to me to say that the information that we have in the Archives, as recorded in the newspapers, has “turned a sad, but very dry report into a real life story which will interest the families of these men if he is able to trace them.

My contact in is touch with the family of one of the other regular crew members who was not on board at the time. It would be good to have more information about the three men who died in our village in such tragic circumstances. Scam Alert: We received details this week of a resident in Suffolk who lost £3000 after being duped by bogus tech support callers. Working from home on her work laptop, the victim allowed the scammer remote access which provided the scammer with access to her personal financial details.

This incident has not only highlighted the scam, but has also shown that the scam has wider implications. The victim's workplace now has to investigate as to whether the scammer was able to access any of the company's information.

How the Scam Works: The caller will tell you that your computer has been sending error messages or that it has a virus. They may mention problems with your internet connection or your phone line and say this has affected your computer's recent performance. They may claim that your broadband connection has been hacked.

The caller will request remote access to your computer to ‘find out what the problem is’. The scammer may try to talk you into buying unnecessary software or a service to ‘fix’ the computer, or they may ask you for your personal details and your bank or credit card details. You shouldn't be asked to pay for viruses to be cleared from your computer, or to fix any issues over the phone.

More scammers are calling people trying to gain remote access to their computer to steal personal information. A common tool scammers use to log into your computer is 'TeamViewer'.

It is important to never check your account balance while a third party has remote access to your computer as it is possible they can see what is being displayed on your screen. If you are called, don’t give them any details and hang up. Report the call

To help tackle these calls report any such incidents to Action Fraud. If you can, supply the name of the company (or at least, who they claimed to be), plus – if possible – the phone number they called you from. Action Fraud - Tel: 0300 123 2040 http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

If you’ve been a victim: If you’re worried that you’ve granted access to your PC or given your bank details to an unsolicited caller, it’s important to take some key steps. Contact Action Fraud and seek a crime reference number to help you pursue any lost funds from your bank. Alert your bank to what has happened, and to be extra safe, run an up-to-date security scan. 32 Accountability Imagine: Scene one. 08.30, a perfect sunny clear skied September morning. Over 100 pupils are being carefully dropped off at The Street entrance to the highly successful and popular school. Each parent, guardian, carer, child, bus driver, cyclist, teacher and passing truck and tractor driver are being incredibly responsible and all doing the right thing to ensure each child is delivered in time and in the right frame of mind to start another school day. Everyone is aware of the stresses and strains that this situation presents to many schools in many towns and villages. At the end of the same perfect sunny September day the same process is repeated and one by one all children are despatched back to their parents, guardians, or carers.

Scene two. 08.30, a dark, dismal, rainy, cold, grey-skied December morning. The same 100+ pupils are being just as consciously and carefully delivered to the same school. Suddenly an ambulance is responding to an emergency and trying to navigate its way to rescue a resident of The Street who needs urgent medical assistance. Visibility is poor, roads are wet and car, bus, truck and tractor drivers are finding it hard to see through their windscreens as the rain beats down and pedestrians scuttle out of the way doing their best to allow the emergency vehicle through. Suddenly in the panic a car door opens, a momentary lapse of concentration, a child steps out into the path of a driver doing their best to make way. There is a thud and a scream. The unthinkable has happened.

Who is ultimately accountable?

Here in Lawshall last Friday morning I witnessed scene one. Indeed I saw how everyone was doing their best to accommodate, collaborate, give and take to ensure safety and harmony was achieved.

There is enormous pressure on everyone, including The Street residents who find it difficult to leave their own homes, to abide by the unwritten rules of safety and harmony. However the much promised path intended to spread the increasing congestion has been delayed. There appears to be a lack of coordination between various County departments; Education, Highways and Planning to deal with this situation that was forecast long ago.

If all parties on the ground every day, twice a day can engage in scene one - creative collaboration for the benefit of everyone, what does it take for the various County departments to work together to avoid scene two before it’s too late?

Nigel Hughes. Co-founder Green Light Trust
