1 Tampere University Speech by President Mari Walls at the opening of the academic year on 10 September 2019 Honoured guests, dear colleagues, alumni and friends of Tampere University. It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to celebrate the opening of our University’s first academic year! The idea to establish a unique new higher education community in Tampere can be traced back to more than five years ago when it was first formulated during discussions involving Kai Öistämö, Tero Ojanperä and Matti Höyssä, who presided over the Boards of the three Tampere- based higher education institutions, and then-Presidents of the institutions Kaija Holli, Markku Kivikoski and Markku Lahtinen. In spring 2014, the three institutions commissioned Stig Gustavson to identify areas where they could establish a leading international reputation and determine the necessary steps to achieve this vision. The 21 founding members signed the Charter of Tampere University Foundation on 20 April 2017. As set out in the Charter, the old, distinguished University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology were to be merged to create a new university with the legal status of a foundation. The new university was also to become the majority shareholder of Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The agreement whereby the City of Tampere assigned its ownership of Tampere University of Applied Sciences Ltd to Tampere University Foundation was signed on 15 February 2018. Our new Tampere University started its operations at the beginning of this year. Today marks the 253rd day since the launch of the youngest university in Finland and in Europe. -

International Entrepreneurial Activities at ESSEC Business School
International entrepreneurial activities at ESSEC Business School ESSEC Business School (French: École Supérieure des Sciences Économiques et Commerciales) was founded in 1907 and is recognised as one of the leading business schools in the world. ESSEC has two campuses in Paris, France (Cergy-Pontoise and La Défense), as well as one each in Singapore and Rabat in Morocco. ESSEC has approximately 6,000 students and seeks to maintain close connections with its 50,000 alumni. The Business School has eight departments: Accounting and Management Control; Economics; Finance; Information Systems, Decision Sciences and Statistics; Management; Marketing; Operations Management; and Public & Private Policy. ESSEC is highly international and multicultural, and its approach is to create and disseminate cutting- edge knowledge, blending academic learning with practical experience, and to ensure multicultural openness and dialogue. This is manifested in the ESSEC campuses abroad as well as its range of international partner universities, professional alliances and company partners. In addition, faculty and students are drawn from a broad range of countries. According to ESSEC’s Research Yearbook 2015, its students stem from 84 countries. The 162 ESSEC professors represent 36 nationalities. To exemplify this relationship, this research project uses a case study of the Bicycle Ring (Cykelringen) in Aarhus, Denmark. Four corners around the Bicycle Ring, with different characteristics in the Built environment, are explored further. In cities with a growing population, such as Aarhus, moBility is an important focus because the amount of travel will increase, putting a higher pressure on the existing infrastructure. In Aarhus, cycling is used as a tool to facilitate the future demand of travel and to overcome the negative externalities associated with car travel. The outcome of improved mobility and accessibility is seen as complementary to a good city life in puBlic spaces. Therefore, it is argued that cycling is a tool to facilitate people friendly environments. Recently, the City of Aarhus has implemented cycle streets around the Bicycle Ring as a solution to improve the conditions around the ring. -

The primal Greece : between dream and archaeology Introduction The Aegean civilisations in the French National Archaeological Museum « This unusual form […] reveals an unknown Greece within Greece […] as solemn, profound and colossal as the other is radiant, light and considered; […] all here meets the reputation of the Atrids and brings back the horror of the Achaean fables », wrote on 1830 in front of the walls of Mycenae, the traveller Edgard Quinet, who was passionate about Greek tragedies. Like other travellers before him, he was aware of approaching the memory of an unknown past, of a primal Greece, but he would never have believed that this Greece dated from prehistoric times. It will be the end of the 19th century before the pioneers of archaeology reveal to the world the first civilisations of the Aegean. The « Museum of National Antiquities» played then a key role, spreading the knowledge about these fabulous finds. Here, as well as in the Louvre, the public has been able to meet the Aegean civilisations. The Comparative Archaeology department had a big display case entirely dedicated to them. The exhibition invites visitors back to this era of endless possibilities in order to experience this great archaeological adventure. Birth of a state, birth of an archaeology As soon as it becomes independent (1832), Greece is concerned with preserving its antiquities and creates an Archaeological Service (1834). Shortly afterwards, Ephemeris Archaiologike, the first Greek archaeological review, is founded, at the same time as the Archaeological Society at Athens. The French School at Athens is founded in 1846 in order to promote the study of antiquities, and is followed by a German study Institute in 1874; many other countries will follow the example of France and Germany. -
