NUMISMATIC HISTORY OF THE REIGNS OF EDWARD I., II., AND III.—{Continued.) BY H. B. EARLE Fox AND SHIRLEY Fox. OPPOSITE this page will be found a plate showing the principal types of those pennies of Edward I. which bear his own name, arranged in chronological order. As it is impossible to figure all the intermediate varieties, which merge almost imperceptibly one into another, the coins have been divided into groups, each of which possesses distinct characteristics, and can be recognised without much difficulty. GROUP I (Nos. 1-4), 1279. Title Rex not abbreviated, except on No. 4. Mints : London only. GROUP II (Mo. 5). Earlier part of 12S0. Letter N always retrograde = H, a peculiarity not found on any subsequent issue of Edward I. Mints: royal, London, Bristol, Canterbury, York ; ecclesiastical, Durham. GROUP III (Nos. 6-13). About July, 1280, to the autumn of 1281, when the royal provincial mints (with the exception of Canterbury), were closed. Do Sumo Pontífice Francisco Maiorem Hac Dilectionem Sobre a Oferta Da Vida
Consecration and Secularity
CONGREGATION FOR THE INSTITUTES OF CONSECRATED LIFE AND SOCIETIES OF APOSTOLIC LIFE CONSECRATION AND SECULARITY Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church regardin the Secular Institutes Provida Mater Ecclesia was a revolutionary ges- ture in the Church. Secular institutes are themselves an act of courage that the Church made at that moment; giving a structure and institutionalize the Secular Institutes. And from that time up to now, the good you do for the Church is very great; it is done with courage, for one needs great courage to live in the world. Many of you live alone, others in small communities. Every day you live the normal life of a person in the world, and, at the same time, nurture contemplation. This contemplative dimension toward the Lord as well as in relation to the world: to contemplate reality, to contemplate the beauties of the world as well as the great sins of socie- ty, its deviations; all these things, and always in a spiritual tension.... This is why your vocation is so fascinating, because it is a vocation which is spot on, where the salvation not only of people but of the institutions are at stake. And a great many lay institutions are necessary in the world. That is 3 why I think that Provida Mater Ecclesia was a truly revolutionary step for the Church! (Pope Francis to the participants at a meeting organized by the Italian Conference of Secular Institutes, May 10, 2014) 4 Dearest Brothers in the Episcopate, On the seventieth anniversary of the prom- ulgation of the Apostolic Constitution Provida Mater Ecclesia (February 2, 1947), and of the Motu proprio Primo Feliciter (March 12, 1948), we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lord for the gift of this vocation in the Church. -
The Secular Institute Ofthe Don Bosco Volunteers in the Philippines
THE SECULAR INSTITUTE OFTHE DON BOSCO VOLUNTEERS IN THE PHILIPPINES Agnes B. Paulinox 1. Historical background ln 1947, Pope Pius XII formally recognized secular institutes as a state of perfection - a true form of consecrated life in the Church. The Apostolic Constitution Provida Mater Ecclesra expressed this recogni- tion and gave the institutes their proper name and their own particular law. One year later, the motu propio Pimo Feliciter more clearly stressed the uniqueness of the institutes' character - a secular character - and their role as Christian leaven in the world. Immediately following Primo Feliciter, was the Instruction Cum Sanctissimus whichfurther developed and clarified points, particularly from Provida Mater. Canon 710 defines as secular institute as follows: A secular institute is an institute of consecrated life in which the Christian faithful living in the world strive for the perfection of charity and work for the sanctifica- tion of the world especially from within. Secular institutes share with religious that total consecration of life recognized by the Church. Their distinguishing characteristic, consecrated secularity, is reflected by speaking of members living in the world, and seeking its sanctification from within. The latter phrase suggests the im- age of leaven appearing explicitly in canon 713. Pope Paul VI highlighted the notion of consecrated secularity when he addressed the institutes on the twenty-fifth anniversary of Provida Mater. He wished them to be an example and model of the spirit the Council wished to infuse in the Church - overcoming secularism and rendering the Church leaven and soul in the world: "The world has need of your witness ! Humanity is waiting for the Church to increasingly incarnate this new attitude before the world, which in you, in virtue of your consecrated secularity must shine forth in a most special way". -

At the base of one’s own nothingness, God may be found. While experiencing some sublime insights regarding God, I also had a much deeper understanding of myself. This evening I saw a painting of the Most Blessed Trinity. This inspired much reverence and love for the Three Persons. The Eternal Father was depicted with His arms open, which explained His Mercy to me, and the ready communication of His gifts. Thereafter, the Office was said with much devotion and for the glory of God . [1] September 27, 1808 : Meditation today was on the Incarnation. I experienced feelings of gratitude for the Most Holy Trinity, and of correspondence with Jesus Christ. I was obliged to love God even before he became man: how much more now. [2] September 28, 1808 : During Meditation today and afterwards, there was the desire for martyrdom, and prayer for it, along with deep interior exhortation. -
This Transcription of the Dicta of Robert Grosseteste from Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Bodley 798 (S.C
1 This transcription of the Dicta of Robert Grosseteste from Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Bodley 798 (s.c. 2656), was begun by Edwin J. Westermann. He published a version of the first fifty Dicta in his Ph.D. dissertation, written under the direction of S. Harrison Thomson: “An edition, with introduction and notes, of Dicta I-L of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, 1235-1253,” (University of Colorado, Boulder, 1942). Dr. Westermann continued to revise and extend his work on the Dicta during his very full and distinguished career as a professor of History at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (1946 - 1987). By the early 1990's he had completed a revised typescript of Dicta 1-50, and made handwritten transcriptions of the remaining 97 Dicta (nos. 51-147). In the Summer of 1998, I visited Professor Westermann in his Kansas City apartment. He was anxious to see his work reach the light of day, and I agreed to “edit, tidy up, and clarify” his transcriptions, and to publish them for him, “in some suitable format.” The work presented here is the fulfillment of that promise. Professor Westermann died on May 19, 2003, just a few days short of his 90th birthday, and only weeks before the completion of this working-edition of Grosseteste’s Dicta. May he rest in peace, and in perfect enjoyment of the imperfect text provided here. The Dicta of Robert Grosseteste survive in more than thirty manuscript copies. Ed Westermann’s choice of a single manuscript to serve as the basis of his working edition was a fortunate one; MS Bodley 798 offers a complete and rather reliable copy of the Dicta. -
Saint Adelaide Parishioners and Friends As They Renew Their Vows of Marriage of 50 Years To- Gether Today, Saturday at the 4:00 Mass
S AINT A DELAIDE P ARISH AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM For the Greater Glory of God MARY MAGDALENE - JULY 22 15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 16, 2017 708 LOWELL STREET PEABODY, MA 01960 “GO OUT TO ALL THE WORLD AND TELL THE GOOD NEWS.” POPE FRANCIS APPROVES NEW PATH TO SAINTHOOD: HEROIC ACT OF LOVING SERVICE Pope Francis has approved a fourth pathway to possible sainthood -- giving one's life in a heroic act of loving service to others. In a new apostolic letter, the pope approved new norms allowing for candidates to be considered for sainthood be- cause of the heroic way they freely risked their lives and died prematurely because of "an extreme act of charity." The document, given "motu proprio" (on his own initiative) went into effect the same day of its publication July 11, with the title "Maiorem hac dilectionem," which comes from the Gospel according to St. John (15:13): "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Archbishop Marcello Bartolucci, secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Saints' Causes, said the addition is meant "to promote heroic Christian testimony, (that has been) up to now without a specific process, precisely because it did not completely fit within the case of martyrdom or heroic virtues." For centuries, consideration for the sainthood process required that a Servant of God heroically lived a life of Chris- tian virtues or had been martyred for the faith. The third, less common way, is called an equivalent or equipollent can- onization: when there is evidence of strong devotion among the faithful to a holy man or woman, the pope can waive a lengthy formal canonical investigation and can authorize their veneration as saints. -

CORPUS THOMISTICUM Sancti Thomae De Aquino Super Epistolam Ad Romanos Lectura Prooemium
CORPUS THOMISTICUM Sancti Thomae de Aquino Super Epistolam ad Romanos lectura prooemium Textum Taurini 1953 editum ac automato translatum a Roberto Busa SJ in taenias magneticas denuo recognovit Enrique Alarcón atque instruxit Prooemium [86165] Super Rom., pr. Vas electionis est mihi iste, et cetera. Act. IX, v. 15. Homines in sacra Scriptura inveniuntur vasis comparati propter quatuor, scilicet: propter constitutionem, repletionem, usum et fructum. Primo enim quantum ad constitutionem. Vas enim artificis arbitrio subiacet. Ier. c. XVIII, 4: fecit illud vas alterum, sicut placuerat ei. I Tim. I Petr. c. III, 15: sicut et charissimus frater noster Paulus secundum datam sibi sapientiam scripsit vobis. Solidum quidem fuit virtute charitatis, de qua dicitur Cant.
