The Letter, Maiorem hac dilectionem, takes its title from the words of Our Lord as recorded in the Holy Gospel according to St. John, “Greater love than this no People’s Mass Music man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends, (Jn 15:13)”. The Letter creates a new category – a Listen and Learn facti species in technical language – called, oblatio vitae, and distinguishes it from the facti species of martyrdom, by five criteria: a) The free and voluntary offering of one’s life, and heroic acceptance propter caritatem of a certain and soon-to-come death; b) A nexus – i.e. close relation – between the offering of one’s life and the premature death of the one who offers it; c) The exercise, at least in ordinary degree, of the Christian virtues before the subject’s offering of his or her life and, http://bit.ly/2tyr9wA afterward, perseverance in those virtues unto death; d) The existence of fama sanctitatis – i.e. the reputation for holiness – on the part of the subject, and of signs [in confir- Penitential Act mation thereof], at least after death; Glory to God e) The necessity, for beatification, of a miracle, one that occurred after the death of the Servant of God, and by said Gospel Acclamation Servant’s intercession. • Do Sumo Pontífice Francisco Maiorem Hac Dilectionem Sobre a Oferta Da Vida

Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.

History of the Christian Church, Volume VI: The Middle Ages. A.D. 1294-1517 Author(s): Schaff, Philip (1819-1893) Publisher: Grand Rapids, MI: Christian CLassics Ethereal Library Description: Philip Schaff©s History of the Christian Church excels at providing an impressive and instructive historical treatment of the Christian church. This eight volume work begins with the early Church and ends at 1605 with the Swiss Reforma- tion. Schaff©s treatment is comprehensive and in depth, dis- cussing all the major (and minor!) figures, time periods, and movements of the Church. He includes many footnotes, maps, and charts; he even provides copies of original texts in his treatment. One feature of the History of the Christian Church that readers immediately notice is just how beautifully written it is--especially in comparison to other texts of a sim- ilar nature. Simply put, Schaff©s prose is lively and engaging. As one reader puts it, these volumes are "history written with heart and soul." Although at points the scholarship is slightly outdated, overall History of the Christian Church is great for historical referencing. Countless people have found History of the Christian Church useful. Whether for serious scholar- ship, sermon preparation, daily devotions, or simply edifying reading, History of the Christian Church comes highly recom- mended. At the base of one’s own nothingness, God may be found. While experiencing some sublime insights regarding God, I also had a much deeper understanding of myself. This evening I saw a painting of the Most Blessed Trinity. This inspired much reverence and love for the Three Persons. The Eternal Father was depicted with His arms open, which explained His Mercy to me, and the ready communication of His gifts. Thereafter, the Office was said with much devotion and for the glory of God . [1] September 27, 1808 : Meditation today was on the Incarnation. I experienced feelings of gratitude for the Most Holy Trinity, and of correspondence with Jesus Christ. I was obliged to love God even before he became man: how much more now. [2] September 28, 1808 : During Meditation today and afterwards, there was the desire for martyrdom, and prayer for it, along with deep interior exhortation.

1 This transcription of the Dicta of Robert Grosseteste from Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Bodley 798 (s.c. 2656), was begun by Edwin J. Westermann. He published a version of the first fifty Dicta in his Ph.D. dissertation, written under the direction of S. Harrison Thomson: “An edition, with introduction and notes, of Dicta I-L of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, 1235-1253,” (University of Colorado, Boulder, 1942). Dr. Westermann continued to revise and extend his work on the Dicta during his very full and distinguished career as a professor of History at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (1946 - 1987). By the early 1990's he had completed a revised typescript of Dicta 1-50, and made handwritten transcriptions of the remaining 97 Dicta (nos. 51-147). In the Summer of 1998, I visited Professor Westermann in his Kansas City apartment. He was anxious to see his work reach the light of day, and I agreed to “edit, tidy up, and clarify” his transcriptions, and to publish them for him, “in some suitable format.” The work presented here is the fulfillment of that promise. Professor Westermann died on May 19, 2003, just a few days short of his 90th birthday, and only weeks before the completion of this working-edition of Grosseteste’s Dicta. May he rest in peace, and in perfect enjoyment of the imperfect text provided here. The Dicta of Robert Grosseteste survive in more than thirty manuscript copies. Ed Westermann’s choice of a single manuscript to serve as the basis of his working edition was a fortunate one; MS Bodley 798 offers a complete and rather reliable copy of the Dicta.

S AINT A DELAIDE P ARISH AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM For the Greater Glory of God MARY MAGDALENE - JULY 22 15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 16, 2017 708 LOWELL STREET PEABODY, MA 01960 “GO OUT TO ALL THE WORLD AND TELL THE GOOD NEWS.” POPE FRANCIS APPROVES NEW PATH TO SAINTHOOD: HEROIC ACT OF LOVING SERVICE Pope Francis has approved a fourth pathway to possible sainthood -- giving one's life in a heroic act of loving service to others. In a new apostolic letter, the pope approved new norms allowing for candidates to be considered for sainthood be- cause of the heroic way they freely risked their lives and died prematurely because of "an extreme act of charity." The document, given "motu proprio" (on his own initiative) went into effect the same day of its publication July 11, with the title "Maiorem hac dilectionem," which comes from the Gospel according to St. John (15:13): "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Archbishop Marcello Bartolucci, secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Saints' Causes, said the addition is meant "to promote heroic Christian testimony, (that has been) up to now without a specific process, precisely because it did not completely fit within the case of martyrdom or heroic virtues." For centuries, consideration for the sainthood process required that a Servant of God heroically lived a life of Chris- tian virtues or had been martyred for the faith. The third, less common way, is called an equivalent or equipollent can- onization: when there is evidence of strong devotion among the faithful to a holy man or woman, the pope can waive a lengthy formal canonical investigation and can authorize their veneration as saints.
