Médiamétrie 126 000 Ile-De-France Radio Survey Over the Exceptional Period from January to June 2020 Outside Lockdown

PRESS RELEASE

Levallois, 29 July 2020

Médiamétrie 126 000 Ile-de- Radio Survey over the exceptional period from January to June 2020 outside lockdown

Médiamétrie publishes Radio audience figures in Ile de France, measured in a population of 6,197 individuals aged 13 and over, during the period from January to June 2020 outside lockdown, which corresponds to the sum of two periods, in order to enhance the robustness of the sample:

- the January-March 2020 wave, running from 30 December 2019 to 16 March 2020,

- and the May-June 2020 “post-lockdown” period, running from 11 May to 5 July 2020, which was marked by exceptional living conditions resulting from the health crisis and gradual measures to ease the lockdown. This period was therefore unprecedented for Radio audiences due to:

› Highly restricted mobility, both due to distance limitations and the introduction of large- scale homeworking, as well as the partial reopening of schools.

› Reduced activity due to partial unemployment, with gradual recovery by phase.

› Activity carried out under unusual conditions for a significant portion of the workforce, mainly due to homeworking and part-time work.

› A partial and gradual return to school for some pupils.

These conditions may have impacted radio station audiences differently depending on the profile of their listenership and their mode of consumption.

For these reasons related to the specificities of the period, the radio audience results in Ile de France during the period from January-June 2020 outside lockdown are not comparable to those of previous waves of the 126 000 Ile de France Radio Survey.

Radio audience measurement

Survey characteristics • Interviews conducted between 30 December 2019 and 5 July 2020 outside lockdown with individuals aged 13 and older living in Ile de France. Nine Low Activity Days were recorded: the week from Monday 30 December 2019 to Friday 3 January 2020, Monday 16 March, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 May and Monday 1 June 2020. • The audience figures relate to 4,923 interviews during the Monday-Friday period. • Socio-demographic and geographical representativeness of the interviews with equal distribution between the survey days. • The interviews were carried out between 5.30pm and 9.30pm on landline phones (including numbers beginning with ‘09’) and on mobile phones in order to reach as many individuals as possible. • Audience information gathering over the last 24 hours (from 5.30pm the previous day to 5.30pm the day of the interview) carried out spontaneously. The interviewee quotes the names of the radio stations he/she has listened to by himself/herself, without any suggestion of an answer. • Only the cumulative audience can be used to calculate the number of listeners: Cumulative audience (as a %) x 101,400 = number of listeners.

Events over the survey period During the survey period from 30 December 2019 to 5 July 2020 outside lockdown, the news was marked by events that impacted on radio listening behaviours:

The period is marked by the global spread of Covid-19. On 24 January, the first contamination cases are identified in France. On 26 February, the first French person, from the region, succumbs to Coronavirus. On 12 March, Emmanuel Macron announces the closing of day care centres, schools and universities until further notice. On 13 March, the Prime Minister announces a ban on gatherings of over 100 people, and, on 14 March, the closing of all non-essential public venues around the country until further notice. On 16 March, Emmanuel Macron announces tougher lockdown measures for the country, which aim to limit the spread of the virus. Starting on 17 March, a strict restriction is placed on movements and gatherings, borders are closed, the second round of elections is postponed, the pension reform is suspended, and working from home is encouraged in all companies where this is possible.

11 May marks the start of lockdown easing measures in France. The first schools reopen partially, people are allowed to travel within 100 km of their home without needing authorisation to travel and wearing a mask is made compulsory on public transport. Working from home remains the rule for companies that can. The Ile de France region and the Grand Est regions are kept in the red zone, public parks and gardens remain closed. On 2 June, a second phase of lockdown begins, characterised by the lifting of a large number of restrictions on movement and places of social, cultural and sporting life. The whole country goes to the green zone, with the exception of Ile de France. 22 June marks the entry into a third phase, with the reopening of nurseries, schools and colleges, as well as cinemas.

On 11 January, the government temporarily retracts the “pivot age” from its pension reform bill. Industrial action at Radio France disrupts part of the schedule until 2 February.

On 31 January, the officially leaves the European Union.

On 25 May, Georges Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American, dies of suffocation after being arrested by police in Minneapolis. Rioting breaks out in the and the “Black Lives Matter” movement takes on an international dimension. On 2 June, a rally against racism and police violence brings together 20,000 people in Paris.

From 12 to 14 June, dozens of Chechens gather in to avenge an attack on a 16-year-old

Chechen boy by drug dealers. The punitive expeditions wreak havoc in the city for three days.

On 3 July, Edouard Philippe hands in his resignation and that of his government to the President of the Republic. Jean Castex succeeds him as Prime Minister.
