Mayor Simon Richardson moved to refuse the DA on various grounds drawn from the previous DA for a similarly large building on the site. Councillors for the development then spoke of the inevitability of change and their fears of Council being taken to court. Th ose opposed raised issues such as bulk and scale of the proposed building, its 11.7m height being above all future buildings in Sta- tion Street (to be 9m under the new LEP), its likely infl uence on the her- itage status of the neighbouring A&I Hall and its heavy use of the narrow lane to its east. Th e staff report on the DA rec- ommended approval but council- lors narrowly saw otherwise. Th e move to refuse was supported by Crs Richardson, Dey, Cameron, Spooner and Ibrahim. • Press Release
THE BAY COLLECTIVE SESSIONS PRESENTS: HIGH VIBES EP TOUR In celebration of the launch of their debut EP, High Vibes, Hayley Grace & The Bay Collective are going on tour. Hayley Grace is an Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter with an unmistakably soulful sound. She has an incredibly diverse range of global experience under her belt, touring extensively around the world. She has graced the stage of Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass and toured with icons like UB40, Phil Emmanuel and Darren Middleton (Powderfinger). After spending the previous eight years touring Australia and internationally, Hayley created The Bay Collective in 2017 during an epic jam session on the back deck of her property overlooking the farmlands behind Byron Bay. The Bay Collective is a raucous six-piece band, featuring some of the region’s most prominent vocalists and multi-instrumental talents. Led by Hayley, the collective live shows are loud, fun, cheeky and overflowing with energy. You feel this band when they walk on stage. Their energetic performances feature a full horn section, guitar, vocals and percussion, for an eclectic mix of styles that embody the spirit of 60s and 70s funk and soul, with lashings of reggae and hip hop. After being invited to play at the world famous Byron Bay Bluesfest in 2018, the band clocked up an impressive run of gigs and residencies up and down the east coast of Australia in their first year. They spent the summer of 2019 playing gigs and recording their debut EP, High Vibes, and are ready to hit the road to launch it this winter.

  • CAB's Website: Cabband.Com
CAB's website: cabband.com Though individual and guest projects clogged their calendars, the foursome decided in 2003 to challenge themselves again. Once more they opened the door, this time to Rushen, whose advanced harmonies added yet another dimension. Inspired now by their intensifying musical communion, they took the fusion pledge -- defy convention, keep standards high, and take every risk you can -- and plunged into CAB 4. Their method was, of course, anything but predictable: Having already established themselves as a versatile live combination in the studio and in gigs, CAB tried something different on 4. This time, each track began with the writer, either MacAlpine or Brunel, creating a demo of the tune. This was then passed along to Auger and Rushen, who added their parts. Later they all went into the studio with Chambers to complete the project. Dennis unleashed rhythms that uncannily supported, interacted with, bounced through, and otherwise led to a final version as alive as any concert performance. “Theatre De Marionnettes” is the latest venture featuring The “Thun- der From Down Under” Virgil Donati on drums, and also a track with Chick Corea. Drawn from their collective history in working with an assembly of giants, from Chick Corea to Sonny Boy William- son, Eric Clapton to Parliament/Funkadelic, and Herbie Hancock to Carlos Santana, CAB just may be the next step in the evolution of instrumental music. If you're a skeptic, give them a chance, for CAB “Theatre de Marionnettes” is ultimately about making music more than shooting off fireworks, and playing from the heart more than to some focus group's blueprint.

  • Rastafari and the Arts
RASTAFARI AND THE ARTS Drawing on literary, musical, and visual representations of and by Rastafari, Darren J. N. Middleton provides an introduction to Rasta through the arts, broadly conceived. The religious underpinnings of the Rasta movement are often over- shadowed by Rasta’s association with reggae music, dub, and performance poetry. Rastafari and the Arts: An Introduction takes a fresh view of Rasta, considering the relationship between the artistic and religious dimensions of the movement in depth. Middleton’s analysis complements current introductions to Afro-Caribbean religions and offers an engaging example of the role of popular culture in illumi- nating the beliefs and practices of emerging religions. Recognizing that outsiders as well as insiders have shaped the Rasta movement since its modest beginnings in Jamaica, Middleton includes interviews with members of both groups, including: Ejay Khan, Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah, Geoffrey Philp, Asante Amen, Reggae Rajahs, Benjamin Zephaniah, Monica Haim, Blakk Rasta, Rocky Dawuni, and Marvin D. Sterling. Darren J. N. Middleton is Honors Faculty Fellow and Professor of Religion in The John V. Roach Honors College, Texas Christian University.
