THE BAY COLLECTIVE SESSIONS PRESENTS: HIGH VIBES EP TOUR In celebration of the launch of their debut EP, High Vibes, Hayley Grace & The Bay Collective are going on tour. Hayley Grace is an Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter with an unmistakably soulful sound. She has an incredibly diverse range of global experience under her belt, touring extensively around the world. She has graced the stage of Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass and toured with icons like UB40, Phil Emmanuel and Darren Middleton (Powderfinger). After spending the previous eight years touring Australia and internationally, Hayley created The Bay Collective in 2017 during an epic jam session on the back deck of her property overlooking the farmlands behind Byron Bay. The Bay Collective is a raucous six-piece band, featuring some of the region’s most prominent vocalists and multi-instrumental talents. Led by Hayley, the collective live shows are loud, fun, cheeky and overflowing with energy. You feel this band when they walk on stage. Their energetic performances feature a full horn section, guitar, vocals and percussion, for an eclectic mix of styles that embody the spirit of 60s and 70s funk and soul, with lashings of reggae and hip hop. After being invited to play at the world famous Byron Bay Bluesfest in 2018, the band clocked up an impressive run of gigs and residencies up and down the east coast of Australia in their first year. They spent the summer of 2019 playing gigs and recording their debut EP, High Vibes, and are ready to hit the road to launch it this winter. Hayley Grace is a powerhouse performer and with The Bay Collective behind her she shows no signs of slowing down any time soon (or ever). Rastafari and the Arts
RASTAFARI AND THE ARTS Drawing on literary, musical, and visual representations of and by Rastafari, Darren J. N. Middleton provides an introduction to Rasta through the arts, broadly conceived. The religious underpinnings of the Rasta movement are often over- shadowed by Rasta’s association with reggae music, dub, and performance poetry. Rastafari and the Arts: An Introduction takes a fresh view of Rasta, considering the relationship between the artistic and religious dimensions of the movement in depth. Middleton’s analysis complements current introductions to Afro-Caribbean religions and offers an engaging example of the role of popular culture in illumi- nating the beliefs and practices of emerging religions. Recognizing that outsiders as well as insiders have shaped the Rasta movement since its modest beginnings in Jamaica, Middleton includes interviews with members of both groups, including: Ejay Khan, Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah, Geoffrey Philp, Asante Amen, Reggae Rajahs, Benjamin Zephaniah, Monica Haim, Blakk Rasta, Rocky Dawuni, and Marvin D. REGGAE IN THE MOTOR CITY: THE AFROPOLITAN AESTHETICS OF REGGAE IN DETROIT, MI Richard Larence Daniel Hopkins A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC December 2019 Committee: Sidra Lawrence, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2019 Richard Hopkins All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Sidra Lawrence, Advisor Reggae, though it originated on a small Caribbean island, has extended far beyond its origins in Jamaica. Not long after its inception, this music became disseminated through popular commercial channels, which facilitated reggae’s global presence and exposed it to a wide and diverse audience. In conjunction with its far-reaching appeal, reggae’s origins in the black, Jamaican, working-class community and its connections to the Afrocentric faith known as Rastafari have also allowed this music to serve as a tool for pan-African expression. In addition, reggae has been used by marginalized populations, both in Jamaica and abroad, as a critical voice against oppressive forces. With these factors in mind, I examine the people and places associated with reggae music and culture in Detroit, Michigan, how reggae is used as a social unifier there, and the ways in which these practices fit into the larger scheme of reggae as a globally circulated musical form. I use the theoretical orientation of Afropolitanism to discuss the aesthetics and politics of reggae in Detroit and as a global art form. Through ethnographic research, which focuses on certain key figures and locations associated with Detroit reggae, I determine how various groups participating in the reggae scene in Detroit use this music and its associated culture to orient themselves, both in Detroit and in relation to reggae as a global phenomenon.
