For its justification, however, the sport looks to a model of the "classic" Western body dating from 400-300 B.C.E. Periodic revivals of classicism, in philosophy as well as in art, returned that muscularly "armored" body to attention-- particularly as an occasion for artistic display during the Renaissance. A similar "rediscovery" of classic themes during the Victorian era exploited the Herculean body for various metaphorical purposes; among others, the presumably "natural" perfection exemplified in the Greek kouros, or male body, was enlisted in support of nineteenth-century physical culture movements. However, neither classicism nor health totally accounts for the emergence of the male body into visibility or for the more recent entry of women into bodybuilding. At the heart of bodybuilding as an acceptable activity or sport is desire for the body, as well as permission given to "build" it in public. Commodity culture has made a business of creating, as well as satisfying, this desire. The fact that desire for the body is often homoerotic has complicated bodybuilding as entertainment and sport. Gay men and lesbians are an important--though more often denied than recognized--part of bodybuilding, both as athletes and as consumers of the physical culture and entertainment products that the sport sponsors. Sandow and the Emergence of Bodybuilding as Entertainment Beginning in the 1880s a German weight-lifter and theater strongman named Friedrich Wilhelm Muller found part-time work by displaying his muscular body, nude except for a very real fig leaf, in poses riffed from Greek statuary.

Posted at www.williamwhitepapers.com Learning from other Movements: Gay Liberation and Recovery Advocacy Tom Hill and William White1 Introduction For participants of the current recovery advocacy movement, there is much to learn from previous social movements. Lessons of considerable import can be gleaned from the movements that intersected in the 1960s, including the civil rights movement, the black power movement, the new left and anti-war movements, the women’s movement, and the gay liberation movement. While all of these are worthy of study, the gay liberation movement holds certain parallels, strategies, and lessons that may be of particular interest. This is due in large part to the societal myths and misunderstandings of both people who have experienced addiction and those with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. The stigma attached to these groups has often rendered them expendable and, as a result, has forced them into hiding their experiences and identities. Members of the gay community, most prominently Bayard Rustin, played critical roles in the civil rights movement and later drew upon the lessons of the civil rights movement in the same way that members of the recovery advocacy movement are now drawing upon their experience within earlier social movements. Because the societal stigma and discrimination targeting these two groups have been so severe, they share similarities in the early stages of building a movement of social justice and change. The gay liberation movement – now inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) lives and identities – currently has 45 years of organizing and movement-building experience compared to the new recovery advocacy movement that emerged in the late 1990s and was formally organized at the 2001 recovery summit in St.

STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.2478/v10141-011-0017-5 The Ethical Duality in Sports: Social and Psychological Aspects of Transgender Participation Baljinder Singh Bal Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab, India ABSTRACT Historically the notion about the understanding of women has been patriarchal in nature. The postmodern world has an inclination to redefine social mores. The prevailing thought in the 20 th and 21 st centuries supports the same thesis. The transformation of attitudes appears to be a regular phenomenon in the understanding of the issue at hand, thereby enlivening the motif of unity between the two. Gender, transgender, sexuality, etc., are in a state of transformation, so that to interpret and reinterpret a state of understanding and re-understanding of the issue of participation in sports has multiple significations. Sport in the 21 st century constructs inimitable challenges for trans-athletes. A broad spectrum of identities is included under the umbrella of transgender identity. Transsexual or transitioned athletes may pose the greatest challenge to equity in sex-segregated sport competition. The subject under deliberation has a large number of interpretations, all of which center on a need to 'deconstruct' the present structuration of acceptance of sex and gender terminology. There is certainly a need to think and contemplate in broader terms about the meanings that assess the well-defined boundaries between disciplines of research.     Timeline of LGBT History in Virginia and the United States This timeline is a part of DHR’s Virginia LGBTQ Heritage project, a companion to our New Dominion Virginia Initiative ( http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/NewDominion/index.htm ). It begins with the earliest recorded event associated with LGBTQ heritage in colonial Virginia and continues through the early twenty-first century. This timeline includes events that were national in scope that affected Virginia’s LGBTQ history as well as events, places, and people specific to the Commonwealth. This document is a work in progress and will be periodically updated as additional information becomes available. Please report broken links to [email protected] . 1566: First known execution in North America of a person for same-sex sexual activities (by the Spanish in Florida.) 1607: First permanent English colony established at Jamestown, Virginia. 1610: Virginia adopts “sodomy laws” of England, making sex between two men a “capital crime” punishable by death. Sodomy laws eventually are passed throughout the United States. Decriminalization of homosexual relationships does not begin until the late twentieth century. 1642: Elizabeth Johnson becomes first woman to be punished for violating sodomy laws (Essex County of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.) 1744: French missionary Father Charlevoix describes the transgender and homosexual behavior of the Iroquois berdache : “There are men unashamed to wear women’s clothing and to practice all the occupations of women, from which follows corruption that I cannot express. They pretend that this usage comes from their religion.” In fact, the Iroquois are among 133 North American tribes that honor their “two-spirit” men and women with a sacred ceremonial role.
