  • Abstract Pray the Gay Away
ABSTRACT PRAY THE GAY AWAY: RHETORICAL DILEMMAS OF THE AMERICAN EX-GAY MOVEMENT by Travis Allan Webster The Ex-Gay Movement marks a contemporary, traditionally North American emergence of “reparative” therapies and ministries that attempt to convert gay men and lesbians into “straight” identities. Pray the Gay Away theorizes these reparative rhetoric(s) as arenas that create discursive spaces of tension—what I call “second closets”—for “ex-gays” in virtual and material contexts. Through digital, rhetorical analyses, this thesis investigates the performative and linguistic reactions of ex-gays exhibited in online testimonies on pro-ex-gay websites, while examining rhetoric(s) of counter-hegemonic, online communities that seek to work against the Ex-Gay Movement. 3 Articles Male Mythological Beings Among the South Slavs Joseph L. Conrad University of Kansas The South Slavs have a long tradition of belief in protective domestic spirits and in malevolent demons of the field, forest and water.(1) Such mythological creatures were prevalent among all Slavic peoples and are part of the common Indo-European heritage.(2) Whereas most beliefs of this type receded among the East and West Slavs by the end of the nineteenth century, they were maintained in many areas of the Balkans until the beginning of the Second World War.(3) Ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the 1960s-1980s has shown that many farmers and stockbreeders in the more remote villages (of former Yugoslavia) have not abandoned their traditional beliefs. For example, the protector housesnake,(4) mischievous forest and dangerous water spirits, and many lesser mythological beings have been reported in several South Slavic territories in the last forty years. Many traditional domestic rituals have their origin in the conviction that the family ancestor's spirit resides under the threshold or near the open hearth and, if properly cared for, will ensure happiness and good fortune for the family. In Russia that spirit was manifest in the domovoj, "house spirit," but as this name itself was taboo, he was referred to in euphemisms such as ded or deduška, "grandfather," and xozjain "master." Offerings of food, especially bread and salt, the traditional symbols of hospitality, were routinely left for the domovoj at night before the family retired. The

HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION: EVOLVING REFLECTIONS A Submission to the Anglican Church of Canada's Commission on the Marriage Canon Karl D. Furr May 6, 2014 722 Selkirk Rd. Kingston, Ontario 1 PREFACE My original intent in writing this paper is primarily two fold. First to review the development within the Anglican Communion and the Anglican Church of Canada of the traditional thinking regarding same-sex relationships. Second, since Anglican theology has relied on Scripture, Tradition and Reason, to study the scriptural foundation of the position taken by various biblical scholars on the issue and to apply reason to this issue in order to develop further my own thinking on this issue. Subsequently in July 6, 2013 the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada voted to bring to its next meeting in 2016 a resolution changing the church’s law to allow same-sex marriage. A Commission on the Marriage Canon was established. The Commission has invited submissions from interested parties. I am therefore submitting this paper to the Commission. I am especially indebted to the book, The Anglican Communion And Homosexuality: A Resource To Enable Listening And Dialogue (2008), edited by Philip Groves, published at the request of the Primates of the Anglican Communion. Its excellent list of references allowed me to read many of the original papers by scholars referred to in the book. Many of those papers are available online. My Orientation My evolving perspective with respect to this issue reflects my background as a Canadian Anglican Christian. I am a straight married man with four children.

  • Redefining the Meaning of God
First Congregational United Church of Christ REDEFINING THE MEANING OF GOD A Youth/Adult Education Class Based on John Shelby Spong’s Book “A New Christianity for a New World” Harper/San Francisco, 2001 In his book, A New Christianity for a New World, Bishop John Shelby Spong argues that the theistic definition for God conceived of by our earliest human ancestors is not only irrelevant but dangerous in a twenty-first century world. He defines the “theistic God” as a supernatural being, dwelling outside this world, and invading this world periodically to accomplish the divine will. Spong’s goal is to move beyond theism, but not beyond God. But who or what is God beyond theism? Who is Jesus when traditional concepts such as incarnation, atonement, and the Trinity are no longer meaningful? In addressing these and other questions, Spong goes beyond traditional theology to present his own alternative of what true faith should be today, offering a unified vision of a “new Christianity for a new world.” This book is the ultimate legacy of Spong’s struggle to discover and promote a faith system that can live in our new world. It is a call for a radical new reformation that has left some deeply disturbed, threatened, and even hostile. It is also bringing renewed hope to multitudes of otherwise despairing Christians who have all but given up thinking that their beloved church might ever break free of an antiquated worldview and the theology it spawned. Topics to be addressed during this eight-week class beginning September 25th at 9:00 A.M.

  • Understanding Male Homosexuality
Understanding Male Homosexuality God’s Power to Change Lives By Jeff Johnston Understanding Male Homosexuality Perplexing and painful as the homosexual Christian’s dilemma is, Jesus Christ offers him or her (indeed, all of us) faith, hope, and love—the faith to accept both his standards and his grace to maintain them, the hope to look beyond present suffering to future glory, and the love to care for and support one another. ‘But the greatest of these is love’ (1 Cor. 13:13). —John Stott1 Homosexuality—the cultural shift A monumental shift has taken place in our culture over the last 50 years, with a growing acceptance and celebration of homosexuality. As a result, men struggling with same-sex sexual attractions find themselves in the middle of a theological, cultural and political battleground. Think about the shift we’ve seen: Gay-identified characters are common in movies, on television, in plays and in books; Lesbian-, gay-, bisexual- and transgender-identified (LGBT) clubs and resource centers are regular features on college and university campuses; Gay-straight student alliances are even found on middle and high school campuses; The judiciary has been bombarded with “gay rights” cases; and political battles about re-defining marriage are a regular occurrence at the ballot box and in state legislatures; And even in the church, denominations have argued about how to address those struggling with same-sex attractions, with some choosing to ordain self- identified gays and lesbians. On the other hand, God’s Word clearly states His plan for human sexuality, and Judeo-Christian teaching has been consistent for thousands of years: God’s intention was for sexual relationships only between a husband and wife.2 For many men and women struggling with same-sex attractions, faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to God’s Word are more important than their attractions or desires.

  • “Ex-Gay” Performativity in Reparative Therapy Narratives
Text and Performance Quarterly Vol. 23, No. 4, October 2003, pp. 331–352 Love Me Gender: Normative Homosexuality and “Ex-gay” Performativity in Reparative Therapy Narratives Jeffrey A. Bennett Advocates of “reparative therapy” employ a modified version of Judith Butler’s “normative heterosex- uality” discourse to “cure” gays and lesbians. Coupling Butler with a “coming out of homosexuality” personal narrative, reorientation texts such as Love Won Out construct a ubiquitous foundation for sexual identity and collective experience. At the text’s conclusion, a tension is produced between a constitutive conception of identity and a more traditional notion of self, grounded in a secured ontological base. These conflicting constructs are ultimately productive for performance scholars, illustrating an attempt to refigure the location of sexual identity and forge new positions of performativ- ity. Keywords: reparative therapy, narrative, performativity, Judith Butler, queer theory n the summer of 1998 a series of advertisements encouraging gays and lesbians Ito “come out of homosexuality” was published in national newspapers including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and USA Today. Sponsored by Exodus International, a Christian-right organization dedicated to “curing” homosexuality, the ads ignited a national controversy over “reparative therapy.“1 At the center of the campaign were John and Anne Paulk, a former drag queen and an ex-lesbian who abandoned “homosexuality” to pursue a “normal” life of marriage and children. Catapulted into the media spotlight, the Paulks personified Exodus Inter- national’s mission statement. In the months following the campaign the couple gave nearly 200 interviews, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and 60 Minutes, and was featured on the cover of Newsweek.
