  • Transgender Representation on American Narrative Television from 2004-2014
TRANSJACKING TELEVISION: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ON AMERICAN NARRATIVE TELEVISION FROM 2004-2014 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly K. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. And to my mother, Elaine Keisling, Who would have read the whole thing. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout the research and writing of this dissertation, I have received a great deal of support and assistance, and therefore offer many thanks. To my Dissertation Chair, Jan Fernback, whose feedback on my writing and continued support and encouragement were invaluable to the completion of this project.

AMONG THOSE Attempting to discern what it really meant, a June 24, 2014 editorial in the New Statesman declared that “something enormous is happening AT EQUALITY in our culture. In the past three years, and especially in the past twelve ILLINOIS gala months, a great many transsexual celebrities, actors and activists have PAGE 26 exploded into the public sphere.” And this month, mainstream news outlets and websites across the United States have been focused on transgender news. Almost every moment of the life of sports celebrity Bruce Jenner had been detailed, scrutinized and commented on since rumors began to surface that Jen- ner was reportedly considering matching outward appearance to inner self. Then, on Feb. 7, Jenner was involved in a car accident in Malibu, California, and the attention became frenzied. TMZ noted that, despite the incident, Jenner’s reality TV series was still going ahead as planned. TMZ had been reporting on the incident to the point of a pathological obsession—posting photos and videos of the wrecked cars involved while People magazine carried a blow-by-blow account of the accident declaring that Jenner was given a breathalyzer test.

  • Glitter Text
All That Glitters – Spark and Dazzle from the Permananent Collection co-curated by Janine LeBlanc and Roger Manley Randy and Susan Woodson Gallery January 23 – July 12, 2020 Through the ages, every human society has demonstrated a fascination with shiny objects. Necklaces made of glossy marine snail shells have been dated back nearly 135,000 years, while shiny crystals have been found in prehistoric burials, suggesting the allure they once held for their original owners. The pageantry of nearly every religion has long been enhanced by dazzling displays, from the gilded statues of Buddhist temples and the gleaming mosaics of Muslim mosques and Byzantine churches, to the bejeweled altarpieces and reliquaries of Gothic cathedrals. As both kings and gods, Hawaiian and Andean royalty alike donned garments entirely covered with brilliant feathers to proclaim their significance, while their counterparts in other cultures wore crowns of gold and gems. High status and desirability have always been signaled by the transformative effects of reflected light. Recent research indicates that our brains may be hard-wired to associate glossy surfaces with water (tinyurl.com/glossy-as-water). If so, the impulse drawing us toward them may have evolved as a survival mechanism. There may also be subconscious associations with other survival necessities. Gold has been linked to fire or the sun, the source of heat, light, and plant growth. The glitter of beads or sequins may evoke nighttime stars needed for finding one’s way. The flash of jewels may recall an instinctive association with eyes. In jungles as well as open grasslands, both prey and predator can be so well camouflaged that only the glint of an eye might reveal a lurking presence.

Bodybuilding Physique Medal winners by Edward J. Ingebretsen at the 2002 Sydney Gay Games. Copyright © Bianchi. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Courtesy Federation of Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Gay Games. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Bodybuilding is distantly related to the medieval carnival feat of strength. For its justification, however, the sport looks to a model of the "classic" Western body dating from 400-300 B.C.E. Periodic revivals of classicism, in philosophy as well as in art, returned that muscularly "armored" body to attention-- particularly as an occasion for artistic display during the Renaissance. A similar "rediscovery" of classic themes during the Victorian era exploited the Herculean body for various metaphorical purposes; among others, the presumably "natural" perfection exemplified in the Greek kouros, or male body, was enlisted in support of nineteenth-century physical culture movements. However, neither classicism nor health totally accounts for the emergence of the male body into visibility or for the more recent entry of women into bodybuilding. At the heart of bodybuilding as an acceptable activity or sport is desire for the body, as well as permission given to "build" it in public. Commodity culture has made a business of creating, as well as satisfying, this desire. The fact that desire for the body is often homoerotic has complicated bodybuilding as entertainment and sport. Gay men and lesbians are an important--though more often denied than recognized--part of bodybuilding, both as athletes and as consumers of the physical culture and entertainment products that the sport sponsors. Sandow and the Emergence of Bodybuilding as Entertainment Beginning in the 1880s a German weight-lifter and theater strongman named Friedrich Wilhelm Muller found part-time work by displaying his muscular body, nude except for a very real fig leaf, in poses riffed from Greek statuary.
