[FCHS Quarterly No. 54, p. 64] __________ DISTRICT 4 - AKRON SCHOOL By Velma Bright Near the close of the Civil War, a two story frame building was erected on Walnut and Whittenberger Streets. This building was used for school purposes about twenty years. The land where the building stood was sold to Moses Sayger by Henry Township in April 1885. Four lots on Maple Street were bought by Henry Township from Elisa Slaybaugh on May 21, 1884. [NOTE: See Akron School, Dist. 4. -WCT] In 1895 a new brick two story building containing eight rooms was completed. This was built on the site formerly occupied by a four room frame school. This was located on Maple Street. This contained both the grade school and high school students until December 1, 1913 when the new high school building was completed in the north part of Akron on Center Street. The Adventist Church building which is the present Church of God was rented for a while before the new high school was completed. Seventh and eighth grade classes were held here to relieve crowded conditions at the school. In 1923 the eighth grade was moved to the high school because of crowded conditions. In 1927 an addition was made to the high school building and the seventh grade was moved into this building. Another addition and remodeling of the building was done in 1950. In 1949 a new grade school building was built just north of the nigh school building. This was finished and ready for use in January 1950. The old grade building on Maple Street was sold and demolished. An addition was made to the grade school building in 1967. In 1962 the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation was organized. This was a consolidation of the schools of Akron, Mentone, Beaver Dam, Talma and Burket. This district included Henry Township and Newcastle Township in Fulton County and Franklin and Seward Townships in Kosciusko County. The present high schools are located at Akron and Mentone; the sixth and seventh grades at Talma and grade schools at Akron, Burket and Mentone. The Beaver Dam School was destroyed by fire in January 1968. [FCHS Quarterly Vol. 6, August 1969, No. 1, p. 7] The Akron Public School closes next Tuesday . BONNER Walking Tour Prepared for Bonner School by the Bonner Milltown History Center and Museum May, 2020 Begin this self-guided history tour on the corner of Hwy 200 and Hwy 210 Hi, Bonner Lumberjacks! Let’s go on a Bonner time travel walk. Before we start, let’s take a minute and look around. How long can you hold your breath? A long time ago (10,000 years) we would be standing on the bottom of Glacial Lake Missoula. It was 1,000 feet deep! How deep is that? The tops of Bonner and Woody mountains were islands. Did you know that our valley has a mountain that is a weather forecaster? Turn and look across the Clark Fork Valley. Crystal Peak had to be free of snow before Bonner girls in the 1940s were allowed to stop wearing the long, brown thick stockings that kept their legs warm under their skirts on their walk to school in winter. And gardeners waited for the snow to disappear from Crystal Peak to plant their gardens or a late freeze might kill all of their plants. What is Crystal Peak telling you today? Is it time to plant your garden? Now, let’s get started on our tour! Do you recognize this picture? It’s hanging in the school library. Walter Hook graduated from Bonner School. Later when he was a famous artist, he painted this mural showing how the timber industry is a part of Bonner School from the trees being cut in the forest, to boards being made at the mill, to the building of the school.

―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer D. M. A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Yvonne Sellers Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Loretta Robinson, Advisor Karen Peeler C. Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent.

October 18, 2013 Music Business in Detroit: Estimating the Size of the Music Industry in the Motor City Prepared by: Anderson Economic Group, LLC Colby Spencer Cesaro, Senior Analyst Alex Rosaen, Senior Consultant Lauren Branneman, Senior Analyst Forward by: Patrick L. All other rights reserved. Foreword I'm pleased to share with readers of Crain's Detroit Business, as well as with others in the Detroit region, this first-of-its-kind study of the business of music in southeast Michigan. Everyone that grew up in this area knows of the "Motown sound," as well as the heritage of jazz, blues, and rock that has steeped into our culture. Many of us are also aware of the more recent innovations of techno and hip-hop, much of which has roots in Detroit. However, until now there has been no systematic analysis of the business of music in our area. Our Anderson Economic Group consultants have combed census and other business records; examined the geographic pattern of nightclubs and perfor- mance venues; scanned demographic patterns for concentrations of heavy enter- tainment consumers; and even conducted primary research into the days/nights of live music available to metro Detroiters at over two hundred specific bars, taverns, and clubs. What we have assembled is a thorough analysis of an indus- try that has always been important to our culture, but can now also be known for its contributions to our employment and earnings.

from Kirk Ward blog - worshipinthecity.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/101-congregational-worship-songs-in-the-gospel-style 101 Congregational Worship Songs in the Gospel Style A friend of mine asked for help with leads on where to get good congregational songs for worship in the Gospel style. I did a quick Planning Center filter of our songs at New City Fellowship and then cut it down to a solid 101. I organized it by artist and I apologize for any spelling errors in names or miss-matched artists. I decided to connect the song with the best recording not as much with the composer or original artist. I recommend YouTube as a place to hear all of this music. This is not supposed to be “the best,” but just a good place to start. Marian Petersen 9/21/04, T1, S1 BL: Hello. MP: Hello. BL: I would like for you to tell me your full name, please. MP: I am Marian Nancy __ Petersen. BL: And what‟s your date of birth? MP: December 11th, 1918. BL: And that makes you how old? MP: Eighty-five. Approaching eight-six. BL: Can you tell me about your parents coming to Union County? MP: Yeah. I could give you a slight description, I guess. My father was from F__, Scotland. He was coming out to the States bringing another lady, woman, to marry a friend of his that was residing in Dayville area. That was his ticket in coming. He ended up in Dayville and was working for Jim Kamp and there were Scotch people around in John Day __ used to be many, anyway. I don‟t know if there is now. My mother lived in John Day. My grandmother on my mother‟s side had remarried and had moved down below John Day about half way between John Day and Mount Vernon. There was a Scotch family that lived just a short distance from there that my father became acquainted with and had helped them out quite a bit with hunting and etcetra. My mother was working there as a cook after she was out of high school…not high school, pardon me, out of grade school because they only went to the eighth grade then. In the eighth grade she didn‟t have the opportunity to go off to high school so she was working and that was where he met her.
