The fields of research supported by the Center range from archeology, anthropology and economics to history, linguistics and folklore. In collaboration with the University Library, the Center is working to develop documentation resources on all aspects of the history of Cyprus, and, as part of its mission to establish collaborative projects aimed at the development and preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the island, is fostering close contacts with other institutions involved in related research. As the Center grows, its resources will include online bibliographical services; audiovisual facilities and archives such as videotapes, diapositives, photographs and microfilm; and rare book and manuscript collections. The Center for Cyprus Studies coordinates research projects and hosts scholars in fields of study of relevance to its mission. The Center also organizes an annual congress on Cyprus-related studies, and issues the biannual Journal of Cyprus Studies, JCS. Kıbrıs Araştırmaları Merkezi Başkan: Ülker Vancı Osam Yönetim Kurulu: Ruşen Keleş, Gül İnanç, Turgut Turhan, Necdet Osam, Halil Nadiri, Emin Çizenel Kıbrıs Araştırmaları Merkezi, Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi bünyesinde, Kıbrıs’ın kültürel tarihi ve siyasi sorunları ile ilgili bilimsel araştırmaları teşvik etmek amacı ile 1995’de kurulmuştur. Araştırma alanları arkeolojiden antropolojiye, ekonomiden tarihe, dilbilimden folklora uzanan geniş bir yelpazeye yayılmıştır. Merkez, Üniversite Kütüphanesinin işbirliği ile, Kıbırıs araştırmalarını her yönüyle içeren bir kaynak arşivi oluşturmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu arşiv, olanaklar geliştikçe video-bantlar, dia-pozitifler, fotoğraflar ve mikrofilmler gibi görsel ve işitsel kaynaklar ile, arşivler, ender bulunan kitaplar ve el yazması koleksiyonlarını da içerecektir. Ayrıca, Kıbrıs araştırmaları konusunda faaliyet gösteren diğer kuruluşlarla Kıbrıs’ın tarihi ve külütrel mirasını korumak ve geliştirmek için ortak projeler geliştirmek de Merkez’in hedefleri arasındadır. Merkez aynı zamanda, Kıbrıs ile ilgili araştırmaların sunulup tartışıldığı yıllık Kongreler düzenlemekte ve yılda iki kez çıkan Kıbrıs Araştırmaları Dergisi’ni yayınlamaktadır. iv Editorial Policy The Journal of Cyprus Studies, JCS, is a refereed, international, interdisciplinary publication whose primary purpose is twofold: i) to develop an authoritative archive and bibliography of sources for the study of ideas on social, cultural, historical, political and legal matters relevant to the past, present or future of the island of Cyprus; and ii) to provide a scholarly, academic forum for the analysis, development, exchange and critique of ideas on these matters. The Journal is bilingual, publishes material in English and/or Turkish. Articles submitted for consideration must focus on subject matter specific to the island of Cyprus, and may include (but are not restricted to) the following topics and areas of interest:

Her fi rst employment was with Cultural Humanitarian Fund “Sukhumi”. In 2000-2006 she was the Director of the Women’s Rights Protection Division there. She still continues to work for Fund “Sukhumi” as a consultant. In 2006 Ekaterine Gamakharia was awarded the John Smith Memorial Trust Fellowship to study democratic institutions in Great Britain. In 2006-2007 she was awarded Edmund Muskie Fellowship to study international human rights law in the US. In 2006-2007 she completed her Master’s Degree in the International Human Rights Law at Indiana University, US. In 2007-2008 she worked as a National Consultant on IDP issues for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Tbilisi, Georgia. Since 2008 she has lived in Baku working as a freelance consultant and trainer for various NGOs. A QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH IN NORTHERN CYPRUS Muallâ Köseoğlu, (Ph.D) Department of Social Work, Faculty of Health Sciences, European University of Lefke ABSTRACT Women’s direct victimization and fear of crime are examined in this paper. This study was taken place in Northern Cyprus among 366 women who are older than 18 and are Turkish Cypriot natives. The aim of the study is analyzing the relationship between women’s direct victimization and fear of crime in Northern Cyprus where is thought as a safe country. A questionnaire was formed by the researcher and applied to 366 women in five major districts of Northern Cyprus. According to results, a significant relationship was not found between direct victimization and this sample group’s fear of crime. This result shows parallelism with some current studies on this issue. Keywords: Crime, fear, women, fear of crime, fear of crime among women, victimization, Northern Cyprus 1. INTRODUCTION The raise of crime rates especially in last 50 years all over the world causes scientific studies relating crime increase. However, new studies have started focusing on the phenomenon of fear of crime instead of causes of crime. Because fear of crime affects the individuals’ life quality and so it becomes a more important problem than the crime itself. The raise of crime rates makes people to feel anxious and under the risk because they do not feel secure and may start thinking that they would be victimized in one day.

Cyprus J Med Sci 2018; 1: 9-14 BACKGROUND To estimate the risk factors associated with intimate partner violence during pregnancy in Northern Cyprus. MATERIALS and METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed between February 2015 and April 2015. An approval from the ethics committee was obtained prior to the study. A self-structured face-to-face survey was conducted among pregnant women who were admitted to the Obstetrics Department of the university hospital. The first part of the survey was related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and their partners. The second part comprised questions about the relationship type of the respondents and obstetric characteristics. The third part consisted of set of 5 groups and each group included questions specific to the type of the related violent behavior. RESULTS The questionnaire was offered to 231 pregnant women, and 219 of them agreed to participate, resulting in a response rate of 94.8%. The prevalence of overall violence before the pregnancy was 75.3%, and it decreased to 68% during pregnancy, which was statistically significant (p<0.001).

    Women and the Media in Northern Cyprus: A Political Economy of Communication and Gender Mashoed Bailie Eastern Mediterranean University Abstract: This paper highlights the gender inequality confronting women in Northern Cyprus and the role that the media play, perhaps unwittingly, in both the production of stereotypes that normalize inequality and, importantly, the absence of information that might challenge previously held views concerning the value of women in democratic society. It is argued that Turkish Cypriot women in general are often unaware of the extraordinary power of the media to legitimize power relations–specifically gender power relations – and to maintain the gender status quo. The article calls for media workers, scholars, and public intellectuals to highlight and critique the current role of media in normalizing unequal gender perceptions and to rethink the potential role that journalists and media institutions can play in opening spaces for alternative perspectives through the inclusion of more women’s voices, women’s stories and women’s visions for a future gender- democratic society. The implicit social contract that secures the gender roles of men and women implies that males are more focused on career and the role of female is secondary and unpromising. The research paper aims to understand the importance of tourism sector in Northern Cyprus through analyzing what factors generate female employment as tourism seems to be an attractive option from the human resources point of view. It studies the case of Northern Cyprus employment practises influincing women's work in hospitality industry, namely accomodation sector and travel agencies. This study is empirical in nature and aimes to collect primary data from 400 employees involved in hospitality activity. All data was statistically analysed with a strong focus on demographics. Three hypotheses were developed and a matched employer-employee data approach is used in the research. It has been proved that even considering the overall higher level of education of the female employees in Northern Cyprus, the majority of examined participants is still facing a barrier to occupy better managerial positions comparatively to male counterparts which tend to hold higher managerial positons.
