ACCESS A RIDE

If you have a disability that makes it difficult for you to use the buses and subways, you can apply for the MTA's Access A Ride program. Access A Ride, like New York City's subways, operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year throughout the five boroughs of New York City, that is, in , Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Presently, the price is the same as the full fare on the bus or train. You cannot use a Metro Card on Access A Ride, but must pay with cash. You need to complete an application and then an appointment is scheduled for you to be seen in person for an assessment to determine if you are eligible for Access A Ride. If you require the assistance of a personal care assistant ("PCA"), that is, a person who performs personal duties that drivers are not permitted to do during your travels, your PCA rides for free. Additionally, if you travel to the same place at the same time of day at least once each week, you can sign up for a subscription service with Access A Ride. In certain instances, a customer of Access A Ride may request an Access A Ride Metro Card that can be used for four free public transportation rides a day on the MTA buses and subway trains. For more information on Access A Ride you can visit the website: web.mta.info/nyct/paratran/guide.htm#aarmetrocard or call 877-337-2017.

REDUCED FARE

Reduced Fare MetroCards allow customers who are 65 year of age or have a qualifying disability to travel on most MTA facilities at half price with a few exceptions. They cannot be used on rush hour morning and evening Express Buses. They also are not valid on NY City board morning LIRR and Metro-North trains.

One can apply in person at 3 (aka 2 Broadway) in Lower Manhattan (Bowling Green #4 and 5 train Station or Rector Street R and W train Station) or by mail. There are also MetroCard buses and vans that are available on a regular schedule at locations throughout the City. One option to consider is the Reduced Fare Metro-Card which automatically refills itself via your credit card, similar to an Easy-Pass. Visit the website http://web.mta.info/nyct/fare/rfindex.htm for further information.

Go to MTA.info or call 511 for additional travel information.
