State Banquet in Honour of the President of Latvia
Read the speech online: www.bundespräsident.de Page 1 of 3 Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the state banquet in honour of the President of the Republic of Latvia in Bellevue on 21 February 2019 “The bad thing about some speakers is that they often fail to say what they are talking about...” I have taken these words of Heinz Erhardt’s to heart, and will therefore begin with my most important statement. President Vējonis, Mrs Vējone, I am delighted that you have come to Germany on a state visit in this centenary year of Latvian independence – welcome to Schloss Bellevue! I have visited Riga nine times over the past few years – seven times as Foreign Minister and now twice as Federal President. These many visits are an expression not only of the close cultural and political ties between our countries, but also of the high esteem in which I personally hold you and Latvia, and of my friendship with you and your country. I would like to thank you, President Vējonis, for the wonderful hospitality you extended to me and my wife during our last visit. And I thank you for the important dialogue that our group of non-executive presidents engaged in under your chairmanship in Riga. We hope to reciprocate on both fronts – hospitality and dialogue – during your visit here. It was no mere coincidence that I quoted Heinz Erhardt a moment ago. The great German comedian was a Baltic German, born in Riga in 1909. His grandfather Jakob served as mayor of the city, and his uncle Robert became the finance minister of the fledgling Republic in 1919. -

They also have maintained a great fear of the unknown and very few wished to actually go under the surface. In the not too distant past, they had a morbid fear and were deeply frightened of what they might find. Only three out of one hundred old-time sailors could swim because they had no love of water. -

V May 1983 ' OFFICE OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE NAVY DEPARTMENT J Foreword 1. The present volume entitled Fuehrer Conferences on Matters Dealing with the German Navy, 194? is the third of a series to appear7 the 1942 and 19^3 conferences having been published pre- viously. "When the series is completed, all important conferences between the Fuehrer and Commander in Chief, Navy occurring during the war years 1939-1945 for which records have been found will be available in English. The documents translated in this volume are the result of notes taken for the Commander in Chief, Navy during his conferences with the Fuehrer. -After these notes were subsequently typed, they were signed by the Commander in Chief, Navy, in this case Admiral Doenitz. There is a noticeable gap in Fuehrer conferences from 21 July to 13 October 1944. This may at least in part be the result of the attack on the Fueh- rer's life on 20 July of that year. 2. The over-all purpose of these translations is to provide materials which may be used as a basis for the study of naval problems arising from total war. The references given for each conference denote the microfilm reels and sections thereof on which the documents may be found in the microfilm library of Naval Records and Library. -

The K-Verband
The K-Verband This is the research of Graham Pickles, Webmaster and owner of “The Hemlington Nautical History Society” (http://www.freewebs.com/graham7760/). …The swift raising of a completely novel unit, equipped with completely new kinds of arms.-Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, 1914 Germany was the last of the powers to enter the belligerent powers to enter the fields of midget submarines. In theory this gave the Germans a position of some advantage in that they could learn a good deal from the experience of their Italian and Japanese allies together with whatever intelligence they had gained of British operational methods and material. However. Despite the efforts of there allies in this field and the known threats imposed by the British. It was not until the end of 1943 that the Kriegsmarine began a serious investigation of the subject. Even then, it was threat of invasion which provided the stimulus rather than any desire to take the offensive against the Royal Navy. They had however, been two attempts to interest the Kriegsmarine in midget submarines prior to 1943. In October 1941 professor Drager of the Dragerwerk Company submitted a paper to OKM in which he proposed the construction of midget submarines with displacement of 120 tons. Drager foresaw these crafts been used in the defence of the European coastline, to support the VP-Boote and for use in mercantile cruisers. Drager’s midget was a torpedo like craft powered by a diesel motor using nitrogen injection; He believed that his craft would be of considerable value in the waters surrounding the British Isles and in the Mediterranean, where there small size would make them difficult to spot.
